Clean 1.1.3

I thought about jailbreaking but I'm hoping to get some good devolpments once the SDK gets released. I rather keep things on the up and up and not risk bricking my phone or breaking warrenty and have something happen to it.

i was on 1.1.2, then i jailbroke it to see what all the fuss was about
installed lots and lots of apps, but each one, i messed around with for a minute or two and then didn't use it again
so when 1.1.3 came out, i wiped them all off the iphone and installed 1.1.3

the only thing i miss is using Summerboard to put wallpaper behind the icons on the homescreen. oh, and being able to mount the disk on the Finder desktop and change the dialtones to spoken words when i'm dialling a phonenumber

both of these i expect someone will produce an SDK-compatible version so i'm happy to wait until after that is available.

while the amount of thirdparty apps that are available already is impressive, and kudos to all those guys and gals that have been developing them all these months, to be honest, there aren't really very many that are very useful. and i didn't find any that were enough to stop me from upgrading

I'm on jailbroken 1.1.3 but with the new baseband, so I have all 1.1.3 functionality and my extra games!

Can't believe there are no official games for the iPhone, even the Nano has great games on it. I am sure Apple will be adding this shortly.

If the next update brings enough extra features, I won't mind if Jailbreaking is not an option.

Why is "None of the above" an option if all of the OSes are covered?

Everything is nicely setup on my 1.1.1 jailbroken phone - so there will have to be a really convincing new feature to get me to move.

i use books and lighttpd to read long articles, books and pdfs - have an automatic script to copy them with scp from a folder on my desktop.

locateme does a decent job of jump starting google maps with my current location.

i can modify the summerboard to my heart's content.

i use vnc to connect to my laptop to control itunes when i am lounging in the other room.

i have a bunch of other apps that i use occasionally - but i enjoy having the option (advanced calculators, voice notes, dictionaries in spanish and french, the rainbow light for the occasional flashlight). and then there are the games - i'm not a big gamer, but i love having backgammon, othello, go, chess available even if i am on the subway. labyrinth reproduces my favorite game when i was a kid. and i have become a total fan of EvolutionRGB.

oh, and did i mention how much fun it is to be able to draw little sketches . . .

so, it could be a while before i go through the hassle of upgrading. and, so far, the reviews seem quite mixed about the reliability of upgrading to a jailbroken 1.1.3.

I jailbroke my 1.1.3. I would have held out until the next update or some apps with the SDK started coming out, but there were just too many cool things added in 1.1.3. I'm all about eye candy, and I can't get enough of the new Maps app; especially when you can peel back the screen. And web clips are so fun to move around for no reason.

Jailbroken 1.1.2.

Reasoning for me is that 1.1.3 is a superficial update and to me not worth the hassle and likelihood that I will have problems.

The primary reason for me being on 1.1.2 is that I write my own apps which increases the usefulness of the device greatly. For example, I am just completing an application that allows me to download files from EasyNews, complete with download queue and ability to pause and resume downloads. I'll be releasing this along with an app that allows you to do the same thing but with any website - simply enter the address and it will display links on that page you might want to leech. Clicking on each link will add it to the download queue and it does the rest for you. Perfect for me here at work as I can leech via a wifi hotspot nearby while in the office, and sure beats lugging in my laptop (with coworkers wondering why I am mucking around with that instead of my work PC).

Personally I feel sorry for those who just try other apps and dismiss jailbreaking as useless. Either they can't or won't code their own apps that are useful for themselves personally. Being able to do that beats any situation.

Will the SDK move the version to 1.2 or 1.1.4 or just stay at 1.1.3? I'll jailbreak if the SDK is a dud and nothing really comes out of it.

After jail breaking my phone with earlier versions, I have realized that the unofficial 3rd party apps just weren't as stable as I would have hoped. My phone would freeze up or crash more than five times a day (I'm not exaggerating) and I was sick of having to deal with the bugs.

I have high hopes and expectations for next months SDK. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Apple doesn't limit who has access to it, though I expect this to happen to some degree or another...

I posted re my girl's phone which is original OS and not updated because she runs OS 10.3.9 and iTunes 7.5. That combo is not even iPhone compatible. She activated her phone on my 10.4.11 computer with iTunes 7.5.

One wonders why Apple does not or can not make this wonderful device accessable to users of the one prior OS at the time of release.

One also wonders why a girl is so stubborn not to upgrade to 10.4, but that is another issue probably not in the technical arena. :)

I love the whole jailbreaking thing. Did it on 1.1.1 but found that the performance started to get slower and every update became a cat and mouse chase. I think the SDK will make the apps I loved like To Do List, IM, available and better frankly. I guess we'll see. Love the idea of 3rd party apps but hate the idea that some could be malware down the road.

This is probably the longest I've been with a non jailbroken phone (v1.1.3). I have used that locate me function a few times now and found it useful beyond just "ohh look it found me." The navizon third party app sucked after the trial as it placed me like a 1/2 mile from my house. Having the web page directly on the homescreen is nice and I can move that itunes button all the way to the third page I never look at :)

Besides this close to the SDK it is not too smart to mess with the iPhone unless you don’t care what happens to it and you are made of money.

I had a jailbroken 1.0.2 and enjoyed some of the apps. But with the multiple SMS recipients, maps with location, and the ability to have iPod controls by doubleclickign my home button, I had to upgrade. It's been SO much more useful for me with a clean 1.1.3 so far.

Now if there's a simple and proven way to get 1.1.3 with the upgraded baseband and the ability to load my own apps, I might be game again to jailbreak. But since the SDk is pretty much "around the corner", I may just wait. :)

Jb 1.1.2 here but I'm going clean 1.1.3 when I get home. My phone part app has been very screwy today and I'm not sure what I installed to get it there. Sometimes the handset has no sound and I have to talk in speakerphone to hear anything. To fix this sometimes I have to plug in headphones but sometimes the iPod loads up and starts playing randomly and hangs up the phone.

Also sometimes I try to dial out and it immediately bounces back to Call Failed, locks the display, and I have to hit the sleep/wake button a bunch of times before the phone responds.

Yeah, no more jail break for me. My phone didn't used to do this.

I jailbroke it, not really knowing if it would work, it did :)

I then built the toolchain for 1.1.1, not really not expecting that I could get it to, I did :)

So... now I've got going writing apps with a 1.1.1 set-up, I'm very reluctant to disturb it prior to the SDK coming out.

However, unfortunately, it's now getting confusing knowing whether the latest native apps are for 1.1.3 only, or what?

I'll also have to make a big step when I port my apps to 1.1.3+

I went along with the Jailbreaks as they came along. I was holding out for a couple weeks with 1.1.2 JailBroken iPhone to see how 1.1.3 was going. Even with the 1.1.3 problems reported... I finally did the the Dev Team Break.

After some problems getting it to work I finally had it done. Unfortunately, I wish the instructions said to uninstall everything except OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem and Installer App.

After, I could not uninstall Extended Preferences and got a Main Script Error which made me loose the Settings App Icon. I could not SSH back into the Phone to move or copy the Preference App to the root which may have fixed settings.

I gave up and installed a fresh 1.1.1. Then upgraded via iTunes to new Clean 1.1.3. With some minor problems. Re-Set Network settings...turning WiFi on and off seemed to fix Safari issues. Mail accounts on and off with some reboots fixed those.

The left-overs....I don't know if its part of 1.1.3 but in 1.1.2 - I added the ability to touch the Battery Icon and it would switch to a Number Percentage of power remaining. Well this still works. Perhaps my Extended Preferences setting just carried over.

Now, il will wait for an easy 1.1.3 with new Baseband break....or until 1.1.4..... which I believe will come out on SDK release day - with the first advance release SDK given companies that have created new Apple approved Native Apps.

Thanks to all for information I gleaned form here.

Did the jailbreak think on 1.1.2 and loved it. Tried after I installed 1.1.3 and failed twice. Just staying with a stock 1.1.3 and waiting to see what SDK will offer.

I have bought 2 iPhone since August. First one (4GB) I used iBrickr 1.1.1 cool..I sold it to a friend who updated to 1.1.2. I presently own a (8GB) with 1.1.3 I am happy with it today, but will wait and see what SDK's are. I really want a "LockBox" feature to securely hold my passwords.

I was running 1.2.2 jailbroken, and then when the 1.1.3 came out, I updated and jailbroke but due to all the errors it had, I went back to 1.1.2 jailbroken.

After months, I finally successfully Jailbroke the thing on 1.1.3. ...and then discovered that half the apps I installed wouldn't run, and the other half wouldn't run right. Nothing could write to disk. When the thing finally started crashing the next day, and totally locked up, unable to be reset or turned off, until the battery drained down and it died, it came back up in DFU-mode (is that "Dun F*cked Up"-mode or "Dead ******** Unit") (sorry for the expletive, just wondering...).

All I really need is disk-access mode, to mount the device as a drive in Finder, but none of the apps I found on installer.app enabled that anyway. It looked like MobileFinder would, but then it didn't...

So I went clean 1.1.3, figuring cross my fingers that SDK-Clause will bring us something nice under the file tree.

If, with the SDK, Apple makes it clear that they won't allow certain apps, like MMS or IMing (because they're in bed with AT&T), or Disc-Access-Mode (because they think we can't handle such advanced computer skills as drag & drop), I'll sadly have to sell this thing and get a more capable device. :(

I really hope I don't have to do that.

1.1.3 Jailbroken. It is a week 25 phone, I use Vodafone and live in the UK. It will forever need be Jailbroken. I could now buy an O2 iPhone in the UK - but there's no point. I would still have to be Jailbroken to allow my Vodafone Spain, SFR, SwissCom and ATT (PrePay) SIMs to function when roaming abroad.

I just upgraded to a clean 1.1.3 from a jailbroken and nicely customized 1.02 (I was an early jailbreaker and a long time holdout on updates). Finally decided with the SDK coming shortly to throw my custom look and apps under the bus and give it a try, thinking I might jailbreak it again. Simply plugged it in and hit upgrade and it working beautifully. I only had to pop my favorite ringtone into Garageband and save it to the phone. All my settings, email accounts, pictures, etc. were still there (unlike the first two updates I did).

Honestly, my phone runs faster, battery lasts longer, and I now have quite a few features that I didn't have before. I do miss my games and puzzles, but I figure they will be back within a month or so. Very much looking forward to seeing what the next year of development brings to the worlds best phone!

I'm with you on this matter. If anything, the SDK is only going to bring onboard the usual suspects selling apps that can be written in a weekend for $20 - 30+++. And also, I greatly prefer being able to use installer.app instead of ****** around with iTunes just to put apps on my phone. Very rarely does the official path actually prove to be the most versatile one, particular with a control freak like Apple controlling what you can and can't do. I think those who are expecting the SDK to allow you to do everything under the sun on the device without limitation have rocks in their heads :)

And just to qualify all this - my jailbroken 1.1.2 has just the same if not better stability and battery life than my coworker's clean 1.1.3. The only difference between he and I is that my rectal cavity is intact and without the bleeding, cuts and abrasions caused by bending over to receive a mandatory 18 months of frisking from Apple and O2.

As of this post:

68.68% Clean
31.32% Dirty

The math:
776-32 None of the above = 744

511 Clean/744 = .6868
233 Dirty/744 = .3132

For the last 4 months I was rockin' a 1.0.2 unlocked phone here in London with a Vodafone sim in it. I never ran any of the 3rd party apps available in Installer and the phone ran super sweet.

But I was getting fed up of the low call volume, low ringer volume and wanted to be able to open more kinds of attachments in Mail.

So only a few days ago I upgraded to 1.1.1 jailbroken and unlocked. Still not running any of the 3rd party apps and so far so good. Sound is louder and seems reliable so far.

Clean 1.1.3 - I tried a jailbreak on my iPod Touch 1.1.2 and to be honest its not that great. Like many others, played with the apps a bit, got bored and haven't done that much apart from use it how I did previously - music, video, browsing and stuff.

The iPhone is going to stay clean and in anticipation of the softwares that we can expect post SDK. Although that said, I really don't need too much different on the iPhone. I'd like MMS and a bit more in the way of PDA apps - ToDo would be nice. But not much else for me thanks all the same.

I must admit, I love my 3rd party apps AND want the 1.1.3 upgrade. But am I right in understanding from the wiki that as a 1.1.2 jailbroken ATT subscriber, I only have two options if I want 1.1.3 upgrade:

1) Clean upgrade to get new 1.1.3 baseband with no hope of jailbreaking

-> or <-

2) Soft upgrade to 1.1.3 with OLD baseband and ability to jailbreak?

Then why am I seeing responses on this poll that claim 1.1.3 jailbroken upgrades with NEW baseband? I am very confused. I love my 3rd party apps but really want that new baseband toooOoo!!!

It's easily done. You're gonna get folk that simply use the iPhone as a phone and not an iPod. As a result they simply charge their phone off the wall charger and never connect it to their computers after activation.

These people probably aren't aware that newer firmware is available but then again, I don't expect them to be reading these forums.

I did my husband's phone the hard way, and my phone via the offical quickie way from installer. Went quick and everything is fine (ok the maps locator feature needs help)...

Now - Why on earth would anyone still be on 1.1.1 and earlier either jailbroken or not?

Would change my poll answer if possible, but I went from jailbroken OTB 1.1.2 to jailbroken 1.1.3 (unlocked--I've been w/ Cingular/ATT for almost 5 years)... Everything works great--all phone functions, Maps locate, etc.... It was a pain downgrading again to 1.1.1 then 1.1.2 (hard to believe getting your phone properly into DFU restore can be so touchy!!), but well worth it!

So you mean the dev team's upgrade from the installer app right? And does that upgrade the baseband or do a soft install? Been hard for me to find that out. That looks like the easiest way, so maybe I'll have to do it that way if it upgrades the baseband. Thanks.

I did a "soft-update" to 1.1.3 and it was going great -- for about 10 minutes. Then, an app that I'd just installed crashed the phone and sent it into recovery mode, so I had to do a "clean" 1.1.3 install.

Several attempts to go down to 1.1.1, jailbreak and upgrade have resulted in failure -- for some reason, the phone reports an "invalid SIM" in 1.1.1, which makes it impossible to do some of the steps described in the downgrade/upgrade tutorials.

So, here I sit in 1.1.3, missing my netflix queue manager, RSS reader, and games. Hoping that the SDK (or a better tutorial) comes out soon to relieve my distress.

I always upgrade to the latest jailbroken version a few days after it comes out and I see that there are no real issues with it (from the comments of others). I've not had any problems with any jailbreak procedure.

Love my 3rd party apps - mostly games - PocketGuitar, iPhysics, Pinball, iBlackjack, iSlots, iSolitaire, iCrossword, iBooks, iDigger, and Domino.

But I spend most of the time in Safari, Phone, or watching the latest Music Videos or movies - usually while taking the Light Rail here in Denver to go downtown.

But wish Apple would "fix" or "add" Outlook Notes sync (although I'm working on a Windows-side app that does that), and have a quick "Airplane" mode switcher app and cut and paste as well as ability to phone number on a calendar pop-up (i.e. a conference call number).

Hopefully with the SDK there will be a wealth of new apps/features coming out. Time will tell.

Clean 1.1.3 over here!

I tried jailbreaking but always got an error going from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 because of my PC.. and to be honest when on 1.1.1 most of the apps seemed to be pretty glitchy and not really worth the effort.. so on a clean 1.1.3 i felt so much better! However, I still want the jailbreak to work for future iPhone fw upgrades for those who use it :D

It is not inconceivable that someone is running something on their iPhone other than Apple's OS. Remember that there is a Linux distro for iPod. While I am not aware of any iPhone-suitable alternative OSes, it certainly can't be ruled out. It is certainly customary for a poll such as this to result in unforseen exceptions ("why didn't you list blah?"). If someone has indeed managed to mod their iPhone to this extent, then I'll ready my faux-surprise face. Indeed, I would be more surprised if there wasn't work being done by someone in this area. Wow. I never knew that. Thanks. I'm gonna look into it.
