This is a thread for, obviously, shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products…

I have always had trouble finding a shampoo/conditioner I enjoy. The closest I have gotten to my ideal shampoo is ‘Crew’ (a men’s shampoo). Usually shampoos either make my hair feel rubbery (like each strand of hair was a really thin rubber band) or the shampoo feels like it never comes out of my hair, leaving a slimy residue in my hair.

What shampoos work best on your hair?

By the way, before people start recommending things to me
• I don’t like shampoos/conditioners that you are supposed to leave in your hair for 30+ seconds. That is just annoying.
• I don’t like shampoos/conditioners that smell bad. (For example the tea tree oil smelling ones ;))

I like Suave and Pantene-Pro-V myself, both smell nice and keep it relatively soft (if not still frizzy, bah) That Herbal Essence stuff (think shampoo-induced orgasm commercial) is supposed to be pretty good to although I haven't tried it.

Speaking of which, anyone know of good products which are anti-frizz and help your hair to be straight at the same time? Mine's somewhat curly (I hate it) and whenever I try to straighten it with my straightening iron it gets all frizzy and anti-frizz gel doesn't do everything, any suggestions?

From my experiences:

suave - blah. I dont think I like suave.

Pantene - the commercials with the 'candid' woman with the annoying-ass laugh annoy me to my core, yet they make good shampoo/conditioner. But the reason I don't use Pantene is because the conditioner tends to stay in your hair (creating the slimy residue I mentioned in the first post).

Herbal Essences - I like herbal essences. I can't say that it is so good that it is orgasmic, but I think it washes out easily without creating a rubbery or slimy feeling. Smells great IMO. I got a sample packet of the Hawafena (that's what its called right?) conditioner and I liked it.

If I was to buy more shampoo and conditioner right now I'd probably either get Herbel Essences or Crew.

I am not knowledgable on anti-frizz products im afraid. I try to keep my hair from growing long enough to where that is an issue.

I use Herbal Essences for my shampoo needs since it smells really nice and leaves my hair feeling soft and clean. You can't beat that, even if it is supposed to be a girl's shampoo. Now, if it would be good enough to induce orgasm, that would just be spiffy.

For awhile, I used Suave Naturals shampoo and conditioner and really liked it (REALLY soft hair), but once those ran out I went back to the generic Pert knock off that the rest of my family uses. It does the job, if nothing else. My hair's pretty soft as it is, but gets oily rather quickly. I usually take showers in the evening before bed, and sometimes it'll be oily again when I wake up!

heh, i use V05 shampoo, and a suave shampoo + conditioner after that. i can't stand a normal conditioner, it's too hard to get out of my hair for me. the shampoo+conditioner makes it a bit easier. my hair has never seemed overly reponsive to different kinds of shampoo, so i just use whatever is cheap...

Try a pomade. It comes in little jars. Crew makes a good one, although it is a bit expensive. Got 2 B's Defiant is pretty good and much cheaper than Crew, but not as nice as Crew.

well i love a line called citré shine, hard to find... target sometimes carries it, dunno. anyway it seems to do a great job of moisturizing without feeling heavy or greasy. Unfortunately it has sunblock in it, and my hair fades easily to a dirty-blonde that i like... when i use something with UV protection, my hair is way too dark. so that's out for me. i haven't had time to find something really nice, i'm using herbal essences right now... love crew but hate the smell, and it really pervades a person... you can't wear cologne with it, you just wind up stinking.

luckily i have short hair now, so it's not as much of an issue-- no worries about split ends or frizz (btw vniow, citré shine makes a Straightening Balm that works wonders)... when i had longer hair tho, it was a real bitch. oily at the root and dry/splitting at the tips. VO5 works wonders...

What is with all you guys using girly shampoos!?!?!? For God's sakes men, if you were born as a member of the burly sex, ACT LIKE IT!!!

I usually wash my hair with a handful of cool water, just like our forefathers in the woods as they hunted for wild animals and fought in brutal clan wars. But I do shampoo (with Head and Shoulders) once weekly. I really should change shampoos however, since I'm planning on growing long hair, which means I should change to something that's not so abrasive on my hair with all those chemicals and stuff.

As for myself, I used to use Pert Plus way back in the day, like 15 years ago. When I started putting a bit more thought into my mop of hair, I went for salon stuff. I'd been using Biolage hydrating shampoo & conditioner for several years. I used to keep longer hair in high school & then out, and that stuff seemed to help me keep it managable.

Now I'm using Rusk "Smoother" shampoo. I cut my hair pretty short, and it helps to keep it from just getting all fluffy since I have thick, wavy hair. It works well.

I've used cheaper stuff here & there when I had no other choice, and I'm sorry to say it...but there is a difference. Sometimes my hair feels coarser, dryer, etc.

What a thread... ;)

i've used fructis quite often .. anything for super dry and brittle hair. now i got some apple pectin stuff from a hairdresser store ... i hate having to choose from tens and tens of products. i just hope my hair would be shiny, non-brittle .. and i hate to go to have a hair cut. i can't stand people that i dont know very well to have any sharp objects (especially scissors, blades, swords) close to my head. it just makes me very nervous.

i try the new apple pecin shampoo and conditioner tomorrow, if i'll look better i'll post the brand too. :)

modern organic products

They make "insanely great" hair products. No chemicals. All natural, so it doesn't weigh down your hair. And it washes right out. Their shampoo and conditioner are pretty amazing.

And all you Suave users should know that it's frying your hair. The acidity is so high you can actually give yourself a perm with suave just by letting it sit on your hair. It's like dipping your head in acid.

I highly reccomend Bumble and Bumble 'Straight' before drying hair, and B&B 'Grooming Cream' if the hair is dry. I use Straight beofre I use my flat iron and it keeps the frizz down.

I used to use some stuff that was in a shiny metal spray bottle. It was a pump spray and came out in a fine mist. It made my hair all shiny and took control of the frizzies.. alas -- I can no longer find it.

I found out that I am allergic to many hair care products. Mostly conditioner. I tried Head and Shoulders to fix that and whammo. I am very very very to all the over the counter dandruf shampoos. that sucked nuggets a few years ago.

I ahev setteled on Bumble and Bumble, from the salon, it is on the expensive side, but it works and I am not allergic to the combination I use.

Herbal essenses is an ok alternative, If I get the right one, but I have to steer clear of their conditioners.

Well sort of. My face is exceedingly sensitive and I get razor burn if I open the medicine cabinet to get a razor. I have long since given up on safety razors and have been using electrics for years as my only alternative. I've even moved to an extremely expensive Norelco which honestly has given me the best cut without the razor burn I have ever been able to get. However it still creates razor burn at times if I travel and I wash with different water or if I try to shave it too close or if I skip a day of shaving.

I get terrible razor burn, too. I broke down over the summer and got a Norelco Quadra Action razor since normal Mach 3 razors were a disaster and the Remington TCT 3 I had was nearly as bad. It's the best razor I've had, but I too still have problems. I have even tried electric razor pre-shaving cream. I wouldn't skip a day, though, since I get the 5 o'clock shadow by lunch time half the time.

Norelco makes a shaving stick. It is a chalk like powder that you put on before you hit it with the electric razor. I use it almost every day and when I do use it I don't get any razor burn. I also get a closer shave when I use it.

I very rarely shave, for the same reasons given above, I use a beard trimmer on it's finest setting every week to keep it down.

When I have to shave I use a single blade, fixed head stainless steel razor with a new blade every time, plus a block of alum salts to close the pores up. I still can't shave 2 days in a row without looking like a traffic accident though.

Best shave I ever had was an old bloke in the Strand with a cut-throat razor. The shops gone now, but that'd be cool.

It's quite true. It's used for hair and makeup. You know that age redefining makeup? Well it certainly has some of that in it. There is a by product in the placenta that is well known to retard the aging process. It's one of the things that chemical companies have been trying to reproduce synthetically for years.

I can certainly see why they changed the name. It would be eye opening if we actually knew how items that use eat or use were made. We just have to trust somewhat in the safety of products made.

vniow,

You still having straightening/frizzies problems? :-P

Try Bead Head Syrum (sp) - works wonders. Kinda expensive, but shop around, the prices can vary quite a bit.

And, as others have said, try using a little Pomade once your hair is dry. nothing waxy though, it tends to make obvious coatings on hair....

Okay here's a question. How many people use some sort of spray, gel, etc. to hold their hair?

I quit using all forms of the stuff back in High School because it's so bad on your scalp, pores (caused bad acne on my fore head), and your hair.

I use either Got2B Glued Spiking Glue or Tres semme Gel to spike my hair. Depends on which I can find at the time.

I use Final Net!

Ehe.

Just kidding. Memories of my Grandma's hair care products. Man that stuff had the most foul perfume smell. I think it could double as the adhesive for heat tiles on the Shuttle tho...

No, no sprays or gels. My hair's too short to benefit from either (and likely soon I'll just go bald and avoid the embarassment of my landing strip sized receding hair line).

I used to use Redken Contour gel, which is an 8, but I've worked up to Outline which is a 12! :D

It holds my hair even in hurricane-force winds.

Can anybody point to a better source than a friend at a hospital for a product that uses human placenta. Animal placenta I can believe. But HUMAN placenta? That seems so unbelievable. Why would they bother? Think of the tons of cow placenta available. With human placenta, they'd have to handle it with all sorts of precautions to avoid blood transmitted diseases.

It's made of people. Soylent Shampoo is made of people's placentas!

I too can attest to this.

There was something on VH1 that mentioned it. Probably something from the 'rock bodies' show.

for some reason it doesn't really gross me out.

So how many guys do you think will ask to "turn you on" within the first week if you get the on button tattoo?

Found one http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/prdSell.asp?ProdGroupID=16140 (shave stick)

I get mine at target

Dave

Found a shave stick today made by Remington. It's the same thing you describe. Compressed talc and other things for electric shaving. I found it at Fred Meyers if anyone is interested.
