total newb - accessing program Norton program prefs?

Norton Antivirus is making me inwardly tingle with frustration.
Every time I insert my USB stick it wants to scan it. Sadly, during the
scan it freezes.:s
How can I access NAV preferences so I can stop it scanning like this? I want to scan manually.
Come to think of it, how do I normally access preferences via "Finder"

ps; I am used to PCs but have just moved to the MAC.

I'd love to rocket-ship NAV (and all its family) to the farthest corner of the universe to a remote moon where it can do no more harm.
Sadly, its a work computer.... :s
