Heck no. You wish though.
And if I am guessing right, there is going to be another Mac Pro revision this year because the new Mac Pros are called "Early 2008" which leads to speculate that there might be another Mac Pro update this year. ;)
My guess the next Mac Pro is going to be called: "Late 2008" Mac Pro.
Sorry for off topic.

That just denotes what point of the year the machine came out. Early, Mid or Late.

Ok..ok....my bad...chillax. So then let me rephrase. I buy MBP on Feb. 8, 08 without AppleCare. Warranty runs out on Feb. 8, 09. I wait a year, then on Feb. 8, 2010 I buy AppleCare. Can I do that and be covered until Feb. 8, 2012?
no. you can't do that. you must purchase before you one year warranty runs out
2011 is the best you can do, dude, give it up!

Hell yes!! :p Haha, ok, ok...for now I give up but I still have plenty of time to find a way in (until Dec. '09 you say. :p). From people's experience, is AppleCare worth the money...like are there high chances of your MBP to break in 3 years?

And the new MacBooks (not MacBook Pros) will come out in May. You guys at Apple chose May (and in the fall) as the month(s) the MacBook usually sees updates.
This is all deja vu for me. I remember two weeks ago when everyone was like "I'll be on the computer all night and I'll be the first to order it!" or something like that. Then, this past Tuesday people were like "Ok, now it's definitely coming out this time. Look, the Apple Store is down on a Tuesday!". Trust me, I really want a new MBP to replace my aging iBook....but Apple already knows when they're releasing it and that date isn't going to change. It could be this Tuesday. Or the next. Maybe Sunday morning at 3:54 A.M. Who knows. That's part of being an Apple fanboy(girl) :apple: ;)

I know exactly what you mean. I can't be like this anymore. I'm on edge all the time. The past two Tuesdays the store has gone down. I was so excited, so sure that that was the day. (Maybe not sure but I sure as hell wanted it to be) and then I was dissappointed again. I want this Tuesday just as much as the rest of you. But I don't think I can take another emotional beating again. Let's all hope for sooner rather than later I guess. But all we can do at this point is speculate. And speculate we will.

I guess you'll be glad you get it in the scenario where something goes wrong on your last day of cover, and they give you a new machine ;) Otherwise, it's just insurance

I prayed to Dog that I could catch my flawed message in time but alas I was too late. SIGH. Now that oxygen is once again flowing freely through my body I hope we can still be dyslexic friends on this never-ending journey towards Apple nowhere.
Of course Hil and let us enjoy some light hearted diversion during our wait.
Question? Do you feel like sometimes Steve Jobs is Moses and we are his people, following him aimlessly, through a vast dessert, to a promised Land that will end up being where? In the middle of the friggin dessert?
Yes Hil, I know what you mean. I worry that if Mac start to really do well, and let's face it Gates's team appears to be flagging somewhat) will they become more like MS in their business practices. It isn't surprising that MS have lost a few court cases in Europe.
The promised land for Steve might be a mighty business empire that has lost the values that we have all respected in Apple such as being able to freely share files, lack of control freak mentality etc.
It is a desert, there is always another sanddune in the distance with a newer version of the MBP sitting on it.

I am too worried about the future of apple as it becomes more and more popular. It has had to deliver quality to survive as the low man on the totem pole. But as apple becomes more popular, things could decrease in quality. (I SO HOPE NOT!!!!!)

Oh man, there are some great posts in here. Thanks txhil and Russet!
And on the point just brought up about Apple, I agree. It would be nice to see them get more and more customers, but if Apple grew lax like Microsoft after gaining a huge following and started turning out half-baked products that would be very disappointing. If Microsoft turns around and starts putting out better stuff to provide more competition for Apple, then that would be something. Oh well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it...
My dog told me the next MBP update is sometime in the future.

I'm not too worried about quality being compromised anytime soon. I mean, look at 10.5.2 and how long it's taking to be released. Apple seems to have its priorities in order on the quality issue. Although I do wish they would end this suspense and at least put out an official statement as to the approximate time the MBP should be expected to arrive. I know it's coming anytime soon, and I'm fortunately patient enough and fed up with Windows enough to wait it out. However, I can't help but think there are those that were turned off by the waiting game and changed their minds to go with a PC machine instead. All those lost potential sales have got to be hurting Apple's bottom line... The mystery was cute at first, but now it's just excruciating.

2.4...strange...
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a 2.4 for baseline, then 2.6 for the higher end models. Maybe a 2.8 BTO option. And if you think about it, the 2.4 would be cheaper than the 2.5 and, from a customer's point of view, it'd just be a .1 difference between the baseline and higher end.

I have no idea if this means anything or not. My Black Macbook broke down for the 3rd time on Tuesday 5th with the exact same problem. The Product specialist decided to replace it this time so I requested that I pay the difference and upagrade to the entry level 15" MBP which he allowed me to do.
Well, now I'm a bit confused. Tuesday 5th I was approved for the upgrade to the entry level 15" MacbookPro:
You can see the specs of the MBP in the quote above. I chose all the default options except I chose the glossy screen instead (no additional cost).
Yesterday FedEx picked up my defective Macbook and the Apple rep ordered my MBP. Today I got an e-mail informing me of the order and my order # and a link to the order status page. Looking at that page shows the config specs (listed below) which are identical to the mid level MBP and not the entry level MBP.
I called to confirm that their not sending and charging me for the mid level MBP. She confirmed I'm getting the entry level MBP and will only be charged $500. Since the rumor is the MBP update is coming on Feb 12th and my shipping date says between the 8th and 12th maybe I will be getting one of the updated models, I'm honesty not sure.
I originally thought that may be they don't have enough stock of base model but quick check on Apple store proved me wrong(I am glad I am wrong)
But if this indeed is a base model for next generation MBP, it's sort of a bad news since Penryn 2.4Ghz only sports 3MB L2 Cache. I mean I don't know too much about L2 and etc but more can't be bad but as current 2.2Ghz matches the price of current 2.2Ghz I guess that's why Apple did this.
Also I was really hopping that Apple will begin with 200GB HDD and 250GB on upper model.
At least I hope they give us 256MB graphic memory even XPS has GDDR3 256MB you know not that Apple cares really.
So it seems like Top two line up will be sth like 2.5Ghz with 2.6Ghz CTO and 200GB HDD. And high possibility of 2GB memory still but 4GB will be great.
Btw does 4GB mean much in Mac OS X cause apparently it does not mean much in Windows Vista 32bit. I know Mac OS X is 64bit but how 64bit is it anyway? If Mac OS X is mostly 32bit, is this why Apple hesitant to include 4GB.
Update: processor price:2.6GHz T9500 ($530), and 2.5GHz T9300 ($316) CPUs with 6MB L2 Cache. 2.4GHz T8300 ($241) and 2.1GHz T8100 ($209) with 3MB L2 cache. And apparently T9300 is at the same price point as current 2.4Ghz and T8300 at the same price point as current 2.2Ghz

The current entry-level MacBook Pro has 2.2 GHz with 4 MB L2 cache. If the new model is 2.4 GHz with 3 MB L2 then the performance it gets will be better than the old model for most tasks, but there will be a few tasks that run slower, because they need to access main memory more often due to the smaller cache. Overall I expect it would be better except in rare cases.

With 32-bit versions of Windows, you really can't use all of 4 GB of memory. The system is limited to a little over 3 GB, even if you have more than that installed. You must run a 64-bit version of Windows to use 4 GB of more RAM.
With Mac OS X 10.5, the system is easily able to use all of 4 GB of memory (or more, e.g. in a Mac Pro). Individual 32-bit processes can only use about 2 or 3 GB, but you can have several processes running, and between them they can collectively use more than 4 GB. 64-bit processes can use more than 4 GB all by themselves.
If you use your computer for a single memory-hungry application and it is 32 bits, then that application won't be able to use all of 4 GB, but the rest can be used for other parts of the system and for file system caching.
The only reason that Apple would hesitate to include 4 GB as standard is the extra cost of the memory modules.

Interesting... They make no mention in the specs list what Graphics card is in it...
Wheelie4, call them up and ask what Graphics card you're getting in it, and how much RAM it has. If they can't tell you, that's very exciting news. It probably means they're updating the Graphics Card in the new MBPs as well.
The girls number I have is not toll free and she's only at work monday thru friday 8-5pm CMT so I couldn't contact her now. She didn't know about the difference in the specs she read off to me (I think she placed the order on their store site) and the specs listed on my order status page. So I just wanted to make sure I was getting the entry level MBP and was only being charged the $500 we agreed on and that I approved and not being charged $1000 and being sent the mid level MBP.
I'd be happy with the currently listed entry MBP (which I was expecting anyway) but if their going to send me an updated model I'll accept that and be even more happy with that outcome of my defective black macbook replacement. :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the lower range MBP has the T8300 processor after all - it gives reason to the price differentiation. I doubt that the new Penryn processor will be slower with respect to the previous one, give the whole new instruction set. Either way, should these specs turn out to be indicative of the new MBPs, its good that the HDD at least got bumped an extra 40 GB after over a year at 120 GB. Video card mystery is still there though, do orders usually carry information on the video card?

I paid thousands for my titanium PowerBook but I never think of longevity when I get a mac. I think of resale value and so every 6-12 months I get a new one and sell the old and it costs me nearly nothing.
I mostly have used desktop macs since 1986, and we used them for several years: Mac Plus, MacIIsi, PowerMac, eMac G4, and the one I currently use is a late 2006 MacBook.
Now I do prefer to use the portables, and I'm waiting to get the soon to come MBP.
Because the portables tend to be updated/improved faster than the desktops your strategy is a nice one, and I would like to do the same in the next months.
Where do you typically sell your used macs??

Well, I'm happy because no matter what, I need to buy a new MBP on Tuesday (have been without laptop for almost 2 months) so I would rather get the upgraded version which obviously gives you better bang for the buck and hopefully will have some of the hardware defects of the previous MBP model (yellowing screen, keyboard freezes, etc.) resolved. Plus of course, a 160 GB standard over 120 GB and possibly a slightly upgraded video card. It makes it worthwhile to have waited between MWSF and now. I don't think we shall be seeing substantial changes, perhaps multi touch trackpad, but keyboard and case will stay the same - I wouldn't bank on the magnetic latch either. Still, it won't be a compelling upgrade for owners of past C2D MBPs, but it will be very alluring for people without a laptop, with a Winblows machine or with a PPC Mac laptop...

The only reason I'm happy is that instead of them replacing my defective Blackbook (my first mac ever after 5 years of DOS and 13 years of Windows) with another Blackbook, they let me choose to pay the difference and upgrade to a MBP (that 13 inch screen was killing me). And if the specs on my order status are true I'm getting a bit more than I was expecting to get, so more reason for me to be happy since I was expecting a 2.2GHz processor and 120GB drive. :) Still the specs on my status page could be an error.
Plus, I can't wait to be back on OS X. Being on the old Dell with WinXP is odd. WinXP file system/structure feels so archaic and totally unorganized and terribly slow after using OS X for 6 months. :(

I was just looking over the Penryn line as well as the processors currently in Apples laptops and one thing that strikes me is that all of them have a C2D with 4mb of L2. The T9500 and T9300 are at the exact same price point as the T7700 and the T7500 when they were released last summer; $530 and $316. The price dropped on these processors in September to $316 and $241, respectively. The T8300 with its 3mb of L2 comes in at the exact same price point (241) as the current T7500 in the MPBs. This concerns me as I was eyeing the lower end MPB, which I hope will be equipped with the T9300. Also, I looked at Intel’s roadmap and in 2009, the Nehalem chips will be shifting from L2 to a larger L3 cache (24mb in high end servers), and I would not be surprised to see the mobile chips follow suit after the 8mb L3 versions (probably 2010). Given that the new $1999 MPB has a T8300 (which I hope it does not), I think I would have to upgrade to the $2499 model with the T9300 for the sake of my laptop being viable in 3 years with new instruction sets geared towards larger caches.
p.s. This will be my first MAC!

Ovbiously they look like an upgraded MBP. Do you think apple would release the specs of their nexgen MBPs before the release? No. They could just be close the the next baseline specs or they could just be an upgraded mbp. We won't know until Tuesday I guess.

Very interesting to see that you've been upgraded! It's a shame they dont tell you the GPU, as that's one of the key selling points for myself.

i sure hope tuesday is the day. that's the day i'm supposed to call apple and set up the replacement for my 2.2 ghz MBP (a 2 month old laptop that has been in for repair 4 times - which was a replacement for a 2.16 MBP that had nearly as many problems). it would be fantastic to get to upgrade - maybe enough to help me forgive and forget all the problems i've had with apple so far... of course, if they'd throw in a free iphone for all my problems that would help too.

I'm in the same boat. I sold my old imac and all my CS3 software is for mac. I thought I was going to get a MBP right away so everything would be fine. But then I read on here they're due for an update. Now I'm using my old windows box and my windows CS3 trials are running out!

"Looks like it's going to happen this tuesday!!!"
I am confused.... there have been a bunch of reports of Apple "upgrading" people for free recently when ordering the lower end MBP. Most seem to think it is just them clearing out inventory to make way for the new.
We all know that new MBP's are coming sometime, but I am curious... what makes you guys think this is an actual new model? The specs perfectly match the current 2.4.
Just curious...

I agree given the fact that if it is a new penryn based model, it would be equipped with the T8300 w/ 3mb of L2 and all information I have seen points to the new MPBs having the T9300 and T9500.

I am sure most of you guys have seen this, however, for those of you that have not, this comes from a poster called Tailpipe over at apple insider and it sounds reasonable. It was posted on 02-01-2008 at 11:12 AM and the link for reference is below.
"This info comes to you from London via an Englishman working at Apple, (and there are more than you think ;-))
A revised MacBook Pro with a Leopard 10.5.2 update was meant to debut at MacWorld but neither was ready.
The delay for the MBP was caused by Intel Penryn processors not being available due to some production glitch. As we all know, Apple doesn't like to announce products too far ahead of their shipping dates - with the notable exception of the iPhone - so decided to delay the launch. Penryn-based PCs now good to go and begin shipping Monday.
Expect new MBP 15-inch and 17-inch within two weeks. 17-inch gets LED.
New MBP DOES feature a slightly revised case design with the new black keyboard from MBA and a larger trackpad, but is basically very similar to existing design. Think evolution not revolution.
The idea is to achieve a commonality of look across the range.
SSD will be an option offering an exceptionally fast boot time < 30 seconds.
Also seen lurking in the corridors of Cupertino was an aluminum MacBook 13". Initially available in silver, my source reckons annodised black, blue, pink and other colours will be available around September. New MacBooks will be a big story later this year. One of the range (I don't know which, maybe the black one) will have a superior spec that basically makes it a MacBook Pro 13"."

It's always hard to say if somebody just takes a guess or has valid information.
All of that has been guess around before, even though it sound plausible.
It reflects what i would expect (and hope for).
So u would expect a slight design change towards air style.

It isn't going to happen in February now, doubt it. Stay parched in March. They will, in April. Maybe May, see. June's too soon. Why July? Or just August.

I honestly don't understand the need for Blu Ray. Given where things are moving (wireless with faster and more reliable throughput), SSDs, etc... what's the main attraction/need? I rarely use the DVD reader I've got now. Who would something like Blu Ray be targeted for?

Because people just like gadgets, and they want what everyone else has. It's the consumer syndrome. They want it because it's new and it's cool and it's there.
BluRay isn't going to be some big standard that everyone adopts and millions of people trash their DVD players for. Right now it's still too expensive and the market doesn't know where it's going so BluRay and HD-DVD are going to sit on the fence and wait for the population to decide.
With a write speed of up to 4x burning 50GB of data would be murder, and for the cost of the drive and the discs you could just pay the $350 for a terabyte harddrive and enclosure and backup your stuff that way. The movie quality is wonderful though, but I doubt the majority of people that have both a decent TV and a DVD player have been begging for higher quality movies, and that many people sit down and stare into their screen looking for imperfections in their shadows.
BluRay is nice, but from it looks like movies on optical media will just become a small market like VHS did in the late 90s. Now that Apple has movie rentals I will be buying an Apple TV after possibly one more update to the hardware and I will be renting the movies right from my couch like the fat @$$ American I am. :D

optical drives will be obsolete in a very near future. it will be replaced with flash memory. heck, nowadays even a card reader has 512MB capacity at least, and a card the size of a finger nail that can easily store 8GB of data is not that uncommon. that's equivalent to 2 single layer DVD.
most softwares, music, and videos are now sold (downloaded) via internet. some vendors even starting to sell softwares via read-only memory card.
i can't remember the last time i use my CD drive. my blank DVD stack has been collecting dusts since forever now. why would people need to burn DVDs anyore while they can easily and quickly copy stuffs to their keychain usb drive anyways? it doesn't make sense. and why would they backup their data on DVDs while they can do it much faster and more reliable with harddrives.
furthermore, storing backups on harddrives (or NAS for that matter) makes it much faster and easier to access, as opposed to dividing your data on tens if not hundreds of DVDs and take them in and out and in and out whenever you need access. it's a very tedious process. it is surprising it isn't obsoleted yet.
i really hope the next Macbook Pro won't have optical drives at all. you can do a lot more useful things with that extra space.

optical drives will be obsolete in a very near future. it will be replaced with flash memory. heck, nowadays even a card reader has 512MB capacity at least, ...Not for movies. The manufacturing cost for DVDs is below one EUR; BluRay will soon be in the same range. (re-)writeable disc will be slightly more expensive.
32 GB (less than BluRay) of flash memory are still way above 100 EUR.

Blu-Ray is not something anyone should have on their minds for a MBP update.
Blu-Ray drives dont even exist in the thin, slot-loading form factor that Apple uses in their laptops.
And it's not worth having anytime soon either.

Complete and utter nonsense. There are billions of DVD players out there, there are millions of high-def players out there, a number increasing rapidly. Online purchasing of movies isn't taking of, and nor will it - people want to buy a physical object. Optical media has a decade or more life in it yet.
You say you don't want an optical drive? Fine - buy an MBA. But I wouldn't buy an optical drive free Mac. I would actually switch BACK to a PC if that were the only offering.

In others, no new MBP tomorrow
Well, I guess I won't be receiving anything tomorrow. Until it does get here I have no clue what I'm getting. While on the phone with the Product Specialist about my 3rd time defective black macbook he decided the best action was to replace it with a new black macbook. That's when I asked to be able to pay the difference and upgrade to an entry level MBP. He said that's doable. He went over the specs for the MBP which were identical to the current entry level MBP. Then connected me with a sales rep who again read off the same specs then e-mailed me with this below quote in it.
Per our conversation, Apple has agreed to replace your MB 13/2.16/2X512/160/SD-DL:BLACK with a MBP 15/2.2/2X1GB/120-5400/128VRAM (MA895LL/A). Because you have elected to upgrade to a product other than what Apple has offered, you also agree to pay 500 for this upgraded product. Apple will bill your credit card for this amount plus all applicable sales tax. Please respond to this email with your approval.
I replied with my approval. So that was 3 confirmations of me getting a 2.2GHz, 120GB HDD entry level MBP. The next day the sales rep e-mails me a order number and link to the order status page but thats were my confusion began. It lists a 2.4GHz. 160GB HDD. I called the sales rep to confirm they are selling me an entry level MBP for $500 and not a mid-level MBP for $1000 and she confirmed I'm getting the entry level MBP for $500 and not a mid-level MBP for $1000. I left it at that and said thank you. So until it arrives I'm as confused about what I'm getting as everyone else here is. :)

Hey guys. So I was tired of waiting and bought the 15" 2.2 Macbook Pro on February 1st. It was supposed to ship the 4th-6th. The night of the 6th I called Apple and they said it's supposed to ship today. The next morning I went to the site and it said Shipping Feb. 11-13th and arriving the 16th-18th. I assumed then that there would be a new model arriving at my office. I called Apple and said I wan't pleased with the delay and said I would return whatever came (I was really just banking on the new model coming out the 5th or 12th). They said for my troubles there would be no re-stocking fee, I'd get a full refund and they sent me shipping labels. I got an email Saturday the 9th that it shipped. I got a box today at my office. I assume it's the current model. The label has a model number of A1226 and a Part Number Z0EB0019Y. So now I have the box unopened and an email with FedEx shipping labels for return. Can someone please confirm I definitely have the current model sitting in this box? If the newer model comes out tomorrow I will return this tomorrow and get the new. Thanks guys.

I have the current MBP, and to be honest, I think i've used my optical drive twice in the 8 months I've owned it. That being said, i don't think I would want to have a machine without an optical drive, because one of those times was to upgrade to Leopard. I can't imagine a smooth upgrade path for people without optical drives... at least not yet.
I'm don't think i'll be as excited about this release but more 2 releases from now when intel's Penryn successor, Nahelem, is out. Then that'll be a huge upgrade performance-wise.

i can't remember the last time i use my CD drive. my blank DVD stack has been collecting dusts since forever now. why would people need to burn DVDs anyore while they can easily and quickly copy stuffs to their keychain usb drive anyways? it doesn't make sense. and why would they backup their data on DVDs while they can do it much faster and more reliable with harddrives.
furthermore, storing backups on harddrives (or NAS for that matter) makes it much faster and easier to access, as opposed to dividing your data on tens if not hundreds of DVDs and take them in and out and in and out whenever you need access. it's a very tedious process. it is surprising it isn't obsoleted yet.
i really hope the next Macbook Pro won't have optical drives at all. you can do a lot more useful things with that extra space.
I on the other hand won't buy a mac if the macbook pro would not have an optical drive. Whatever apple thinks, I need an optical drive built in. Why should I rent movies that I already have? Why should I buy a seperate 100 dollar device if I can just insert DVD into it? It doesn't make sense to not have an optical drive on a mackbook "pro". I guess it is okay in the mackbook air but not on the pro line.

I actually hope they don't get rid of the optical drive. It would make it more difficult to install new software or do an OS reinstall, and I'd like to be able to easily rip music to my iTunes without having to go through a secondary device or computer to do so.

I'm with you. Besides, for cheap distribution of legally transferable content, you can't beat a $.50 CDR or a $1.00 DVD. So until ONE or at most TWO removable flash media sizes become ubiquitous, we need those round silver discs. I reckon the round discs have about 10 years of life left in them.:D

My Dell is on ebay right now and I am so excited to be buying a MacBook Pro-the NEW one, if it EVER gets here! So, with the advent of the thin-style keyboard on the MacBook, the iMac AND now the Air, will they put it on the Pro? I think it would multiply the sexy factor by about 20. Thoughts?

the current keyboards are just fine. got the standard usb-keyboard hooked to my mbp and it's great, too. i am totally indifferent but the new-style keyboard would quadruple the chance of design refinements to the line come the new machines...

Feb 11, 2008, 04:21 PM
What exactly are you implying, regarding design refinements? I'm not quite understanding. I think the only thing the line needs badly is LED's on the MacBook. At any rate, a new keyboard is more likely than the radical move of no optical drive.

the day a 4GB flash card costs the same as the price of a blank re-writeable DVD today, and a 120 GB SSD costs the same as a 120GB disk-dur today, that stack of 1,0000000000000 DVDs and readers will be gone within 3-5 years.
flash cards are more secure, more portable, faster accessible, scratch-proof, weather-proof, et cetera. you name it.

Been waiting for a new MacBookPro too long now. If a new one comes out tomorrow I will buy immediately.
Was considering MacBookAir but no thanks. I have to have optical drive and firewire. But the size though, temptating...
Fingers crossed for tomorrow:)

So if they were waiting for 10.5.2 for the new MBP, wouldn't that mean they have to have time to "install" it on all of the hardware making a tomorrow MBP update unlikely? I want to be wrong, just preparing myself for yet another disappointing Tuesday.

If it does happen tomorrow, what's the best route to purchase one? We have a Mac Store and Mac Authority Store here in Nashville. Or, purchase one on-line? I get a government discount, but I really don't care so much about the price at this point. I've been waiting since the fall of '07. This is my first Mac. Vista was the last straw for me, but I will still fund my habits by working on Windows machines.

Why on earth would they do that???
If they did that, I will not be upgrading my MBP. I will keep my current one.
You know why the current MBs and MBA have the current keyboard they do? Because they are cheaper. Not backlit, they dont have a smooth type feel, they have a more clunky feel. The MBP has a more professional keyboard, smooth, less clacky, feels better under your fingers. Now I also have a new apple wireless keyboard, and I dont mind it, but for prolonged use, I would not use it...mostly entertainment.
New keyboard that matches MB will decrease the sexy factor by 20% imo.

I can't say that I've used the new keyboard type EXTENSIVELY, but riddle me this: the new keyboards must be getting great response if they're on the MB, the Air and all the desktops, so why NOT switch? The Air keyboard looks totally awesome and I think they feel good-I mean personally, the current MBP keyboard is just like any other keyboard(i.e. Dell, HP) but with backlighting. I think they'll be going with the new style keyboard on the new Pro. So, the question now remains: will it be iMac white or Air black? I'm indifferent here, just wanting other perspectives.

Seems the long wait is over ! Mac OSX 10.5.2 update has been released ! which makes it all clear 4 the much awaited MBP. Finally time has come to lighten our wallets and go 4 new MacBook Pro , which will almost certainly feature Multitouch Trackpad, Intel Penryn 45nm Processors (T9100,T9300 hopefully) , we dont want 3MB L2 cache do we . Yeah some sources suggest that it might have Video GFX upgrade ( maybe nVidia 8700 MGT), hard disk option of SSD is also on the cards though chances are mearge. Shell design change is unlikely and LED display on the 17" is a possibilities.
So all this freaky rumours make us cross our fingers and hope that some angel provokes steve jobs to release the MBP .. kudos MacBookAir ! Its PRO time !!

I do think the white MB style keyboard would look much better than the black though. Only one concern about it—I have seen display models of those (the white ones) end up looking very dingy after a while. I did some research on this, and the fact that initially the white MB's got dingy almost immediately. Apple fixed the problem and as far as I know, dinginess on all white Mac plastic cleans up pretty well, keys included. That said, anything that goes for too long without cleaning will stain eventually. I'm still hoping for the white keys!

Hi everybody, first post. Just curious why a lot of people who already have an MBP seem to be looking forward to getting the new one? Problems with the current model?
no no nothing like that, I have tons of friends that have it and love it. I just don't want to buy something when I could have gotten something even slightly more for my hard earned money only the following week. Thats really it, Im SURE the MBP current model and do everythig i need and more. But if that update is going to give me an extra 6 months usage down the road then of course I want to wait. I really think thats why all of us are waiting.

I think most everyone here would agree that even the current model of MacBook Pros are freaking awesome. Sometimes, even if your current model is great, the urge to get the latest, sexiest, and most powerful version is just too tempting to pass up. :apple:!!!

hmm - MacBook Pro(s) still 24 hours availability on the Singapore store for all models. That doesn't bode well.
What happens when they do updates like this by the way, to the old stock which is clearly still sitting around? I'm quite sure the old models just disappear off the online store that day.

Apple is a California based company and it releases all the products based on PST (Pacific Standard Time) so its obvious singapore store is still not updated.
Either way when apple updates its US online store, only then changes will be reflected in other worldwide stores. So keep ur fingers crossed and wait 4 the MBP.

Same thing in the norwegian store, 24 hours shipping.
Just called applestore here in Norway for some questions about returningpolicy (2 weeks btw). He said that there where no updates now. And I laughed and said "but you wouldnt know that anyway before it would have been official". I thing he just wanted so bad to sell me an MBP just right away.

What are you on?
Penryn brings slightly lower power use with slightly better performance clock for clock and slightly higher speeds (Up to 2.8Ghz now).
8700GT is the best your going to get in terms of GPU power.
If you need one, get one :/ I will laugh at you if you have to wait till May, June or July for an update!
I don't see what you lot are waiting for TBH. Multitouch track pads would be a nice feature but something I wouldn't use.
No new wireless options, SSD is still stupidly expensive and only small increases in performance.

Feb 12, 2008, 04:23 AM
The reason people are waiting is because they simply don't want to buy a product that's so out of date, especially when a new model is so close to being released.
Even if the update doesn't come til May/June/July, I would still not buy the current model at the current price because it's not worth the money.

I'm waiting for clarification that my indecision will not yet be final.
What I believe I need (and I'm sure I'm far from alone) is a 13" MBP to replace my excellent but non-Intel 12" PowerBookG4 (I regretfully have to use some business apps which require Windows).
MBA isn't the answer (I need a small but true desktop replacement), MB doesn't seem sufficiently robust and the 15" MBP just isn't as easily portable.
From what I see now there just isn't a pricing bracket that would make this feasible.
So what do I buy? - obviously nothing just yet

You understand me, Tosser. I agree the MacBook Air is hot, but come on... It's just not a MBP. It black keys on a MBP might look cool, I don't know. The real question is, however, will it be much faster or cheaper? Multi-touch trackpads are a nice feature, but I think I'll be using a mouse anyway. After all: I don't want RSI. If there will be a cheaper 17" version or a quicker 15" I'm going to be real exited.
Maybe they will release a whole new MBP: the MacBook Pro Pink. Nice and shiny, with a black keyboard. I bet you never thought about that, did you! :o;)

Excellent! A pink MBP!! Man, that would make me vomit.
They might make it all black?
Anyway, remember the black keys on the TiBook? Looked fine to me. Besides, it's easier to read white letters on black than the opposite. If you don't believe me, hold down ctrl+alt/option+cmd and press "8".

If a 12" appears I am pretty sure I will be spending. Revamped 15" if no 12" and depending on if it gets the full overhaul, then its a buy instead. I guess the first Airs are now with people on getting to them soon and Apple needs to push its stock price back up, so its a good time for new Macs.
