Anybody know of some basic yet fun games that will run well on a rage 128?

Everything that isn't 3D. Or at least that doesn't look 3D in today's standards. If you can find some early 90's 3D games, those might work. :p

On my Powermac G3 with rage 128 I have Alice, Star Wars Racer and Red faction, all play very well in OS 9 but if I run them with classic in OS X they start to lag.

More like early 2000s.
Games like Beachhead 2000 (http://www.gamedb.com/ssps/0/1/00630), Quake 3 (http://www.gamedb.com/ssps/0/1/00153), and plenty of the Tomb Raiders should run just fine.

So run them in Mac OS 9.

Quake 3 era and earlier games should be ok, and most emulators should be ok too as these don't rely on the graphics card much.
I installed Halo once on an old G4 with a rage 128, it worked! - everything was grey and white as it couldn't load the textures and it moved at 1fps, but it didn't crash or anything.

Bugdom is Nevermind I lied.
Anyways, no, you're not going to find a lot of games like that being released as freeware.

So run them in Mac OS 9.
I do run them in OS 9, I was just giving info on the performance.
You Could try Weekend Warrior (http://www.pangeasoft.net/weekendwarrior.html), its now freeware.

The Rage Pro (a much inferior chip) ran a good number of games in Classic: Nanosaur, many of the Tomb Raider titles, Bugdom, Star Wars Racer, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Myst. Tropico will run as well, which I found very fun.
I guess it depends which sort of games you like, but there are choices available. Booting into OS 9 shouldn't take that long. Startup was always pretty fast from memory.

I dpaanlka was implying you should boot into OS 9, rather than using Classic.

Marathon trilogy, and all subsequent games that run on the Aleph One engine.
Marathon Trilogy: http://source.bungie.org/get/
EMR 3 (much recommended): http://excaliburworld.com/emr/emr3/index.html
Eternal X (I find it boring, but you might like it): http://eternal.bungie.org/
Then there's a bunch of other shorter, but equally fun conversions such as Marathon Red, and Marathon Evil (both much recommended).
Play through all of them, and you'll be set for the next three years. After which, you'll never want to touch another FPS again.
Then of course there's games like Starcraft...
Quake 3 runs brilliantly (1st hand experience from my cube)
etc.

Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Myth II (maybe Myth III?), and other games like those will run fairly well.

Thanks, these look interesting. I'll look into them. I already have Starcraft Brood War:p I'll get Starcraft II for my Mac Pro when it's released.

Knights of the Old Republic?
Red Storm's Tom Clancy game... what was it called?
Splinter Cell?
They all worked well on my Powerbook 1.25 fwiw.

I can swear by Unreal Tournament, Quake III, Oni, and Myth I/II on the Rage 128. I'm getting old...

Game performance on a 1.25ghz PowerBook isn't worth anything in this context.

Ya, we're talking about a 667Mhz TiBook with 1GB RAM and a 30G HD.
Oh ya, and that wonderful rage 128:D
Oh and I downloaded Marathon. It works great! Poor graphics but what do I really expect from a 30MB game...

A 667mhz TiBook features a Mobility Radeon, which is quite a step above a Rage 128. You will be able to play better games than Marathon.

Hmmm... maybe your thinking of the DVI model. This the Onyx model which has VGA output.
Heres the System Profiler under the Graphics/Displays section
ATI Mobility Radeon:
Chipset Model: ATY,RageM6
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
Slot: ATI
VRAM (Total): 16 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4c59
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-XXXXX-115
Displays:
Color LCD:
Display Type: LCD
Resolution: 1152 x 768
Depth: 32-bit Color
Built-In: Yes
Core Image: Not Supported
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
VGA Display:
Resolution: 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color

Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
See where it says chipset model: ATY,RageM6
Well an ATY,RageM6 is a Rage 128.... Google it.
Convinced yet?

Oooooh. I could have sworn you were talking about the blue & white PowerMac G3 with the Rage 128. Yeah, the DVI PBG4 (what I've got) had a Radeon 7500, but still your Onyx PBG4 should perform a fair bit better than the PowerMac at least due to the CPU, I would think.
There is a mod for Unreal Tournament (http://resurrection.bungie.org/) that recreates the original Marathon. I've only looked at it briefly but it seemed pretty cool. But if I really wanted to play any of the Marathon games I'd probably use Aleph One.
Carmageddon II, if you can possibly get your hands on a copy (I wish I could), was really fun and should perform brilliantly under OS 9.

As others have said...Unreal Tournament runs brilliantly (on OS 9) and looks awesome too. Playability wise, IMO, it's much better than the later editions.
Get it!

ATY Rage M6 = the first Mobility Radeon. A Radeon is essentially the Rage chipset with more bells and whistles. The PowerBook G4 in question has a Radeon, supports Quartz Extreme, and should have better 3D performance than the earlier Rage 128 models.

I would imagine a 667mhz PowerBook G4 should have Quartz enabled - I mean I guess I can't be sure since I don't own one. But both the Gigabit ethernet and DVI models are supposed to have Radeons, as indicated by the specs in the Gigabit user manual located here:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PowerBookG4_15inchGigEthernetGettingStarted.PDF
101034
Which you can find here:
http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/powerbook/
Can that really be disputed any more?

I used to play Quake 1 & 2 on my old G3 iMac under OS X, ran very well. Your Radeon will be a huge step up from that...

Warcraft 3 will run nice aswell.
Check out http://insidemacgames.com/ they have a huge list over games and most games that are made before 2005 will run pretty well.
