Description:: Running our WorldBench 6 test, the MacBook Air scored a 61. Our current top-rated ultraportable, the Lenovo ThinkPad X61, scored an 86 on WorldBench. We generally say that you'll notice a 5 percent difference in speed, so the gap between the ThinkPad and a MacBook Air would be very noticeable.

That said, the Air is far from the slowest ultraportable out there, though. The Fujitsu LifeBook P7230, scored a glacial 32 on WorldBench 6. The Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150 wasn't much better at 38. You can see results for more ultraportables on our latest top 10 chart.

Medium-fast. I forget, is that a warm, red center or hot and pink?

LOL, nice. That thinkpad is dog ugly, especially for IBM. I'd take the lighter, cuter, slightly slower MBA.

IBM sold the Thinkpad line to Lenovo a while ago. But, you are quite right. In fact, if I look at the Thinkpad and the MBA side by side, I don't think they even belong in the same category. I would say it's unfair to compare the speed of the MBA to the thicker, bigger, clunkier (no trackpad!) Thinkpad. It better be faster! You ought to get some sort of benefit for buying one!

PC reviewers can be so subjective when it suits their needs. That Thinkpad doesn't even have a touchpad!

I know about Lenovo, but ThinkPad is just always going to be IBM to me. anyway... the comparison would have to be, OK, the ThinkPad has 15% more raw computing power, so Windows would be that much more resposive (ish). Now you need to quantify how much using that retarded nub rather than a modern (big, luxurious, multitouch) trackpad will slow you down, and merge those to for an accurate comparison of how much faster the one machine will be than the other.

If you are anything like me, the MBA will be much, much faster, and more enjoyable to use. Those nubs make me want to kill all humans.
