It's a little silly, but I'm just interested to see if any of you have named your Mac Pro with any type of nickname or handle. If so, what did you name it?

I named my powerbook "Panic". I do not suggest doing this though, as looking through logs on that PB, you would see "Panic" all over the place. Made looking for an actual panic rather difficult. Also, it would freak out anyone looking at the logs up at work. They thought the laptop was panicing every few seconds because they would glance at the logs, and see panic all over the place.

I guess it was funnier (is that a word), when your there.

My Mac Pro is named Meerclar, the name of the goddess of the cats in the fantasy novel "Tailchaser's Song".

This fits with my home Linux server, which is named "Hushpad", also from a character in that book.

The Macbook Pro is named "Nala" (from The Lion King) and the G4 at work is "Sarafina" (from same).

Yes, I like cats and cat-related media a *lot*! :)

So begins the quest to find a name for my new Mac Pro... my laptop is "Lappy" and I just began the quest to name my Mac Pro (yep, i geeked myself out on this one)....

Gary

I'd be interested to hear how you came up with this name (?)

I named my powerbook "Panic". I do not suggest doing this though, as looking through logs on that PB, you would see "Panic" all over the place.

Ha... I evaluate systems, servers, etc... I know exactly what you mean. Not a bad name for a laptop though.

Currently it is named "JWMACPRO". My first and last initials are JW, but I'm thinking about changing the name. Will changing the name affect anything in Time Machine?

We used to have a Unix box at work called "FUBAR". The server once had a problem over the weekend and hit the escalation report for Monday morning. The Senior Exec running the call wasn't too thrilled when he heard there was a server by that name on his production floor. The server was renamed within the week. :D

I used to do something like that, and had icons to match :)

I finally decided to go to a 'Logical' naming sequence for my desktop. And organic chemists (such as my college roommates) will immediately recognize my naming sequence that I've used on my 5th Mac:

Currently, its two internal drives are:

Pentene
Pentyne

If you're wondering, Pentane was the original 160GB drive it came with, which has been pulled and is in semi-retirement.

To follow form, my next desktop will start with the name of Hexane. Not sure yet what I'll do for a fourth drive name....maybe Hexanol? Although I do have to say that "Toluene" has a nice ring to it too.

benzene too surely!

all those 'pent' drives are a bit similar aren't they - the point of naming them is to quickly identify which drive does what

homer = home
lisa = my brain box/workhorse = scratch drive
maggie = small
marge = clean and tidy = backup/time machine
bart = ...uuuh... = everything else (lol!)

When I saw this thread I thought it was nuts but then I realized that while I had never named the machine, my 4 1/2 year-old already did. My son calls it simply, The Silver Box.

All I heard for nearly 2 weeks while the logicboard was being replaced was, "Daddy, where is the Silver Box?" "Daddy, when are we going to get the Silver Box back?"

BTW, every time he sees the side of the machine he asks, "Why did they put a fruit on the side of the Silver Box?" to which is 2 1/2 year-old brother says, "That's just silly!"

Dude, I am so bad at the whole naming convention. My drives are named:
Macintosh HD
Michael 1

The Mac HD is my boot drive with mostly just programs

i've always tended towards a transformery theme with my naming. the windows workgroup is cybertron and my airport hub thingy is moonbase 1. i recently decomissioned my old fileserver/bittorrent box which was called vector sigma, so that is the name my mac pro will be getting. although unicron is kinda temping too :)

oh, and my 3g ipod is called soundwave and my nano (before it died) was laserbeak.

i don't tend to muck with the drive names though.

Get a life? Don't you think that is a bit harsh? Nothing wrong with spending a few seconds renaming hard drives to make it easier to remember what is stored on them. That being said, I "wasted" time naming my HD's a after anime themes.. Magi, for the supercomputer from Evangelion. SDF-1, the ship from Macross/Robotech, and the Yamato, used in numerous anime and a real life WWII Battleship.

As a combination of my quad-core Mac Pro, and the best rock album of all time, I named mine "Quadprophenia".

On an unrelated naming scheme, my volumes are named: Fry, Professor, Amy, and Calculon.

Should be called "Narcoleptic", as in, it tends to not want to wake from sleep..... Or maybe "Ras", as in Reboot After Sleep

I was thinking of calling mine Snow White for the same reason.

My three drives are called Clean, Crunch and Overdrive :)

Ah, tis a pain in the butt to find that info!

First, the easy part: You change your share name:
System_Preferences->Sharing
Enter your the name in the "Computer Name:" box.

Second, from the command line (open Terminal)
sudo scutil --set HostName <FULL NAME OF SYSTEM>

eg:
sudo scutil --set myComputer.MyDomain.COM

hope that helps

PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz: Chaotica - I think it's from a cr*p episode of ST:Voyager. Something like "Bride of Chaotica"?
iMac G3 Blue Dalmation: Serenity - I watched the film while I was installing Tiger on there.
iPod touch 16GB: Monty - Python :)
iPod nano 2G 8GB black: Katzenjammer - named after Fran from Black Books (UK comedy series, very funny).
MBP 17" C2D 2.6GHz: Firefish - Erm... I really don't know why I called it that.

New Mac Pro will be: Woz, an homage.

Hard drives are all named something functional, like "Data", "Projects", "Games" etc. (I can remember pi to 100dp but I couldn't remember if "Bart" had my pictures on it, or if "Maggie" had them!)

Ol!ver,

Bring up the terminal program from Applications->Utilities
The shell should look like:
Last login: Sat Feb 16 18:45:16 on ttys003
destiny:~ luis$
From there just enter:
Last login: Sat Feb 16 18:45:16 on ttys003
destiny:~ luis$ sudo scutil --set HostName grannysmith.MyDomain.Dyndns.NET
when you start another terminal (CMD-N), the hostname should have changed
Last login: Sat Feb 16 22:51:42 on ttys005
grannysmith:~ luis$

If you don't have a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) then just use your computer name in the command above.

Last login: Sat Feb 16 18:45:16 on ttys003
destiny:~ luis$ sudo scutil --set HostName grannysmith

I used to name all my PCs with names from Greek and Roman history/mythology. However, I decided to stop doing this after:

A system named "Prometheus" had the retaining clips for its heatsink break, and slowly cooked itself to death.
A system named "Heracles" became so ridiculously unstable, that it'd crash if you looked at it funny.

And so on, and so forth. It seemed that I was either cursed with having a system that either lived up to it's name far too well, or would ironically be completely opposite to what it's name would suggest. Fate has a horrible sense of humour, in my case.

So I decided to take a different route, and started naming my machines after anime characters.

The iMac is Kagami (Lucky Star).
The Mac Pro is Isako (Dennou Coil).
The MacBook is Sakura (Card Captor Sakura).
The Mac mini/HTPC is Arturia mini (aka Saber, Fate/stay Night).
And finally, the fileserver - which is mostly used for storing anime, is Konata (Lucky Star).
