I was shocked when I started it. I have a MBP right next to it and its much brighter.

And yes, I need to turn it down one level (something I have never done before)

One level?


Try turning it down to the bottom and finding it "very bright".

That's a minor problem with the new iMac.s

I swear, some day computer displays will be so bright that all we will be able to see is the screen and nothing else around us.
