I had to do the same for Macromedia fireworks and the other packages with fireworks (contribute, etc). Also Final Cut and Logic Pro. Basically it is updating nearly every product it seems.

Apple has posted an update to Quicktime bringing it to version 7.4.1 today. Updates are available for Leopard (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime741forleopard.html), Tiger (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime741fortiger.html), Panther (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime741forpanther.html), and Windows (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime741forwindows.html).
Apple reports the new Quicktime addresses security issues and improves compatibility with third-party applications. Specifically, the update addresses (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798) a possible vulnerability that could result in arbitrary code execution. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users, and requires a restart.
Apple has released a number of small software updates over this past week.

Maybe QT's greatness is that it allows for such things as perian and flip4mac. This is, it provides plugin, extensible support for media playback integrated within the OS X environment.

Yeh it's useless without perian and flip4mac, but once you do, it's great, especially with a Pro license. Much faster than any other 'lite' editing app I've used, and it's great for playback too, very speedy launch and hassle-free...

Plus, QuickTime is actually 2 things: QuickTime (the player application/browser plugin) and, more importantly, the framework which virtually all of Mac OS X and its applications (both 1st and 3rd party) use to play media.
Once you've installed codecs such as Perian and Flip4mac, the entire system (including applications) will support media files which use those codecs. For example, with F4M installed, it's possible to QuickLook .wmv files.
This is why I encourage new Mac users to install QT codecs, rather than rely on standalone players such as VLC. Sure, I have VLC installed for the odd file which QT/F4M/Perian can't handle (extremely rare -- usually a slightly corrupt file). But for 99.9% of uses, QT fits the bill.

Why the Quicktime update always requires a restart? Shoot!
Quicktime isn't just the player. The player is just a frontend to give you control of playing media files. The backend is much more interesting. All of the quartz graphics rendering is done by quicktime. That means that animations like minimizing a window is done by quicktime. Because of this, the backend is always running and you need to stop it, overwrite it and then restart it. The way to do it is by requiring a restart.

Why can't they just roll it all up into 10.5.2?
I think this is part of 10.5.2. Just like the iLife/iWork updates. They are just releasing them in parts so the download size is smaller on the offical "10.5.2" update.
Basically rolling it out in chunks.
SolrFlare
Feb 6, 2008, 06:14 PM
Why can't they just roll it all up into 10.5.2?
Because these updates contain fixes to other issues, and, if 10.5.2 isn't quite ready yet, better to roll these out in preparation in order to spread out the size of the download.

I'm a huge movie trailer buff and watch trailers over and over every day. QT is obviously the best source to watch them in. Second would be flip4mac. Use the conversion tool all the time at work. It's just great to have as a second exporting tool other than Final Cut. Also, the ability to export numerous videos at once. :D

If Apple has to fix all of its software to run on 10.5.2, does that not imply that there's a good chance that 10.5.2 is going to break a lot of other software?
It would turn 10.5.2 into a "train wreck" if you have to update lots of third party software because Apple can't make a point update to OSX compatible with the previous version.
All of these "Improves compatibility with OSX" fixes are not a good sign.

What's with these endless tens of megabyte updates for QT? I never see any difference in quicktime performance, and it still doesn't run full-screen without paying for pro, cynical software-crippling.
Compare this to VLC which plays almost anything, and has few, small-ish updates. They should embed it in safari as standard. One of the few apple apps that still bugs me for some reason.
Hmm, just read the posts saying it does some of the core graphics routines. Is that true? I thought it was handled by the Quartz libraries (core image and video) basically a high level way of accessing OpenGL.

I just installed the update for QT and yesterday's iPhoto, and on rebooting I am in the Setup Assistant reboot loop, grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Trying to boot into Safe Mode so I can safely shutdown and reboot (This was necessary when I once tried installing GlowWormFW on Leopard, and I hear it has resolved others previous Leopard Setup Assistant loop problems).
Unfortunately, in Safe Mode, I still have the Setup Assistant screen just with a nice Leopard desktop background, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I am hoping I don't have to wimp out and just restore from TM, but thank God I have this old PC still around.

That's assuming apple HAS to update apps for the new OS, we don't know that's the case.
Yes, but I was replying to 19 year old John who thought that it was cool that Apple was having to fix so much stuff - he took that to mean that 10.5.2 would have lots of good stuff.
If an update or new version breaks existing software, it means bad engineering.
1. Either "bad engineering" because the update was poorly designed and tested, and caused problems when released
2. Or "bad engineering" because the old version had problems that weren't fixable without breaking stuff - and a conscious decision was made that breaking some stuff to fix the rest was the right thing to do

QT hasn't needed Pro mode to access Full Screen for approximately the last 2 versions...Apple did change this!
QTKit does access the core graphics, core video and core animation frameworks.

I think you couldn't be more wrong. It is not great because it allows for those two awkward plugins/ plugin sets.
Well, there are tons of plugins for directx in windows anyone can easily find and install. All directx plugins work with any media player installed on the system. Not to mention subtitles were never a problem in windows.
Perian is a relatively new solution and it is not as complete as those on windows.

I remember the "knife the baby" part of the article. There is a lot more backstory though.
Thanks for the link!

can someone confirm the front-row subtitle issue is not fixed with these latest updates? I have installed the latest QT and Perian 1.1 but still no subtitles in Front Row. As soon as subtitles kick in, the screen goes black.

If an update or new version breaks existing software, it means bad engineering.
But that assumes that 10.5.2 will break existing software...do we know that's the case?
Well when you BUY the studio you are paying for that too. Are you saying you can just hack it to pro or what?
People pirate any app they can...you don't think that happens with QT pro?

For me, this still doesn't fix the problem of viewing the Macbook Air ad on Apple's website which 7.4 broke.

AFAIK, you would have to do an archive/re-install of OS X. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.
If one wants to go back to QT 7.4 or earlier, we return to the best solution we had when QT 7.4 broke several things, such as After Effects.
Go get the program Pacifist and an older installation of QuickTime. Use Pacifist to have the older version of QuickTime install over the current QT files on the system. Then reboot your computer and you should be back to the older version of QT.

This also fixes the issue with rented movies crashing iTunes.

You'd be surprised. Folks with older hardware (iBook G3s, CRT iMacs, etc.) may keep using Panther forever if it does everything they need. :)
true, didnt think of it that way

I wonder if this will fix all the issues I've been having with Itunes when trying to play movies...
