Mail hangs then crashes when attaching file

Hi all,

Just getting my new iMac set up and am having problems with Mail. After creating various email accounts and importing my inbox/sent messages from my old machine, I thought everything was squared away. Mail sends and receives messages fine. Then I created a new message, and tried to attach a PDF from my local drive. Got the spinning beach ball, then Mail shut down. Among other things, the error report indicates:

Exception Type: ECX_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000....
Crashed Thread: 0

Any clue as to what is causing this and how to fix it?
