View Full Version : 'Night of Panther' Oct 24th at 8pm
MacRumors
Oct 23, 2003, 11:09 AM
Apple reminds us (http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2003/oct/23panther.html) that the "Night of Panther" kicks off at 8:00pm on October 24th.
All 65 Apple retail stores will host “Night of the Panther” kick-off events with free gifts, great savings, theater demos and a chance to win a Mac.
Of interest, at last year's Jaguar (10.2) launch Event, Apple had an unadvertised 10% off promotion at Apple Stores.

My prediction: free black t-shirts with the X logo on the front.
I got a free shirt at the Grand Opening of the Apple Store at Roosevelt Field, Garden City, NY.

What was it like at the Apple store in NYC when Jag came out? Is it madness and mayhem with a line 2 years long to make a purchase and lining up on the street or was it a bit more laid back than that? I quite like the idea of a t-shirt or something but have no desire to be crushed in a stampede.
Cheers.

The lines at last year's Jaguar event were indeed long (I think my wait just to purchase Jaguar was 2 1/2 hours). This was due in no small part to the 10% off deal (several people bought 3 or 4 computer systems with printers, etc.), no ability to handle checks at the Genius bar (which was opened as a register), an in general underestimating the willingness of zealous mac fans to travel (1 1/2 hours in my case) to be a part of this event.
I do hope that they anticipate this, because I'll be there again tomorrow. ;)

I'll be at the Woodfield store. :)
Normally, when meeting people somewhere, I'd say "I'll be the geek wearing the Mac t-shirt."
I suppose that won't work this time. :)

I think that with Mac OS X, it didn't really fully develop until Jaguar. Now Panther is the first update that is adding features that are features and not a part of what you expect in the core of the OS. 10.0, 10.1 were all beta versions in my view, and 10.2 was the first "real" version of OS X. Now the Panther is out I wonder where Apple is going to go with the OS. Panther is a complete STELLAR package. By Thanksgiving 2004 are we all going to be drooling over all the awesome features of 10.4? I know that most OS X users are making the switch to 10.3, but Apple is really going to have to but some seriously awesome stuff in 10.4 in terms of performance if they want anyone to shell out another 130 dollars next year.

Does anyone know if this (potential) discount might be honored at CompUSA in areas that don't have a real Apple store? I live in a state that doesn't even have 1 Apple store, so CompUSA is all we've got.

I'll (probably) be at the Apple Store in Westfarms. I was there for the Jaguar launch, but its a bit of a drive. Does anyone know if you can use a student discount at the Apple Stores? Maybe they'll give out free Panther mousepads. My Jaguar mousepad is getting a bit worn out.

I wasn't around for the Jag launch but the 3Gen iPod launch at the NYC store was insane. The line literally wrapped around the entire block, and this was in the rain. If you don't like lines and crowds then I'd wait a day before heading down to the SoHo store. It will be chaos in that store on Friday.

Hhmmm...thanks for that. Maybe I'll just order it online after all.
My problem is that I'm dying to get Panther up and running but as yet it isn't supported by ProTools and probably won't be for another month yet. Major dillema! Maybe work will have to go on the back burner for a while:)

It does mention Panther, too, so this isn't a totally OT post. :)
But this article -- and from this publication, in particular -- is great to show those MBA types who are world-weary of dealing with the Wintel boxes with which they've loaded their companies, and need to hear about something other than alternatives (like Linux) that are beyond their understanding.

Didn't we say the same thing when we got Jaguar, that they would have to have something awesome in 10.3 in order for us to pay another $130?
Personally, I would LOVE Panther, but I'm not seeing all that much in it. Fast user switching, cool, but I'm the only one who uses my computer regularly enough to use that. iChat AV? Nice, but I don't need a video by any means, in fact, I'd almost rather type, so I can get up and get food and whatnot, or be doing other things, and not seem rude. Xcode? most mac users I know don't develop their own stuff. FileVault isn't useful for me, I'm not afraid of anyone stealing my environmental and evolutionary physiology notes, or the pictures of my cat. The new mail is nice, but, not THAT different. The only thing I would use, and a lot, is exposé. That would be sweet to have, but not $130 sweet.
Oh well, I know I'm going to get ripped for this post, but whatever. I love Apple and I definitely want Panther, but not at that price.
edit: oh yeah, and the new Finder windows. Brushed metal now, and the folders were moved to the side instead of top. Again, not that much. Yeah, I know there's more to it than that, but you get my point.

in january when i finally decided I'd pay for an operating system, i went to an apple for jag. apparently, they can apply an edu discount on hardware in the store, but not software. at least that was the case then. but, i suppose it's worth a shot.

I'm not really sure if different stores are going to have a different plan of action for tomorrow night or not, but I'd like to pass along some info I got re: the Clarendon Apple Store in the No. VA/Washington, DC metro area.
Today at lunch I stopped by and asked them some questions about the event. They WILL be honoring the government employee discounts which I assume applies to the education ones as well.
The store will close between approx. 7-7:30pm and will reopen at 8:00pm. Based on previous events, they are expecting a lot of people but said weather could play a factor since it's apt to be pretty chilly tomorrow night (is that going to stop me, NO!).
There was an average amount of people in the store today but there did seem to be an energy. :) The people working seemed pretty happy and excited.
Hope to see some of you all in this area there! I'll have my digital camera and will post pics on the forum. :) Btw, I noticed there is a Cheesecake Factory nearby! I don't know if this is new or if I just never realised it was there. If it is chilly it'll be nice to have some hot coffee waiting in line!
It's allllllllllllllllmost time... :)

at this point...if they include these amazing "features" i'd shell out $70 for an edu version...I want to see:
a single look to the GUI...it's honestly gotten so sloppy it's sad.
the ability to customize my system icons without having to BUY candy bar...are you ********** kidding? how hard can it be? why should i have to pay to change my trash icon...(deleting candy bar's preferences is a work around but still...id rather be honest)
the ability to choose an overall theme...aqua and aluminum don't mix, i give apple an F for GUI Design. The only thing I like are high res icons. I don't want to work in Candy Land damnit!

I did which is why I haven't ordered it yet. I bought an iBook (my first Mac) and 3 months later they released Jaguar with no upgrade price. "Welcome switchers! Join the multitude of the gouged". The only reason I am considering getting Panther is because now I qualify for educational pricing. If I still had to pay full retail there would be no way I would get it. I love Apple and I just couldn't switch back but sorry: I'm not shelling out $130 every year no matter what features you stick in there.

Where's the [rant] tag? A great big launch of a new operating system and our local Apple reseller is going to be closed because it's a long weekend. I cannot believe it. Not only that, the NZ distributor's website will not display it's page of resellers. After much phoning and talking to the Apple NZ marketing team there is a Wellington computer store that will have copies, but they claim to know nothing. Given the almost total lack of knowledge of Apple products demonstrated by most computer store staff why would I not believe them. It would be nice if Apple got it's **** together down here. The guys that control distribution appear incapable of capitalising on the new products. They're still focused on their traditional market segment and the plonker who presents the annual Apple updates raves about how simplistic the Apple products are. Maybe if he checked a dictionary he would either stop using the term or not rave about it quite so much. Don't get me wrong, I've had some good experiences with the staff at the local reseller, but I'm astonished they will be closed for the big launch. And don't get me started on the price of Apple products here.

I think the better question is when is Apple going to release the next version of SOX. Apple knows they have years now to compete against the next version of Windows. Panther is a strong OS. Strong enough to kick the crap out of XP for the next few years. I'm wondering if they may push a new release back to 2005?
I also wonder if Apple may have a parallel program going on to develop OS 11. I can't imagine that they are sitting on their thumbs while MS rewrites Windows from the ground up. So while one team tweaks OS X .2 .3 .4 etc another is working on whatever goodness will be found in OS 11. *drools at the though of what might be in OS11. I’ll miss the cat names. :)
As for Panther launch. The Apple store in the MoA is closed but the Edina one is open but honestly I wouldn't be caught dead at one of these things. I'm a geek and all. I've got a PDA permanently attached to my car dash for GPS usage but going out on a Friday night for a launch of software? :p

As a sad old married guy, me and my buddy are going to the Panther event in Towson, MD even though we both already have Panther coming via the Up to Date program. Just going to be fun to see all the macheads.
As for the 10% off, I just bought a 12"PB from Maczone. $1595, $40 512 mb ram upgrade (@$110 value), free shipping, no tax. If I'd bought at the Maryland Apple store even assuming the 10% discount, I'd have to pay 5% sales tax and wouldn't get anywhere near the steep discount on the ram upgrade. IOW, in states like MD, a 10% discount doesn't take you very far, unless it's a big order.
But maybe a 20" display ...

Actually, Mac OS 8 was Tempo; Copland was never released. And they made a big fuss about 7.1, 7.5, 7.6. I paid $50, I think, for Mac OS 7.6, and then bought 8.0 less than a year later for, I think, another $50. There was a fuss over 8.1, 8.5 and 8.6 too. Mac OS 9 cost me a cool $99.
I suppose we should also say that versions older than 7 weren't called "Mac OS"... and that they usually came on floppies. System 6 fit on 4 low-density floppies, I think.
BTW, my Panther arrived while I was at work today. I will be opening it in less than an hour :D

Picked up Jaguar last year at Woodfrield and it was friggin' nuts. Never saw a line soooo long at the mall. Hopefully, with new stores in the area, the crowd will be dispersed slightly. I know my "new" local store didn't exist This time last year. (Of course the grand opening at Mayfair also had a huge line. But that was free, not $130.)

Pull your head out of the mac world and do some research. They haven't delayed it to 2006 because they are still working on the packaging. Longhorn is a rewrite from the ground up. They may, and probably are from the Alpha's I've seen, used some code from XP but the overall OS is being revamped.

OK back on topic. This is about OSX not Windows my point being that Apple really isn't under any pressure to release a .4 version anytime soon.

Hmm, we bought an iBook about a month after Jaguar and it was preinstalled. I doubt it would take that long to switch system images. Especially with 7B85 being in existence for a few weeks now. We did order directly from Apple, so maybe if your friend got one elsewhere, it was just stuck in the retail channel for a couple months.
My dad's been waiting for Panther before he buys his G5. It's his first Mac and he doesn't want to mess with installing/upgrading the OS. I'm trying to find out for sure when they'll start shipping with Panther preinstalled (if they haven't already). As soon as it's confirmed, he'll be placing his order. Right now the Online store still shows graphics of Jaguar with the G5s. I'll see if they update it tomorrow...

i'll believe it when they actually do it. they can say whatever they want, but i'm not going to believe that longhorn is a completely new OS until it's released. afterall, this is a company that released Windows 95 touting it's 32-bit ness and emphasized how much they are getting away from DOS when even a novice like myself (at least back in 1995) could immediately tell it was still based on DOS. it may not have been a lie, but it was enough to fool a whole lot of people and make them wonder what was going on.
in the article, it mentions how gates have certain visions of what you can do with longhorn... like screening phone calls. i think this is utter nonsense. if they really were designing OS from the ground up to be delivered in 2005/6, i highly doubt that they will be talking about how it ties to applications and devices.
of course, i could be completely wrong. but if i were gates, the last thing i'd worry right now is how to screen phone calls on the new OS. i'd worry how to make it so secure and rock solid that they won't have to issue patches every other week.
regardless, it will be an exciting day tomorrow!

I read the give-away as ONE iMac total, not one per location. Not the best odds.
Prize and Approximate Retail Value. One (1) Grand Prize — a 15-inch iMac computer with Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW). Approximate retail value is $1,299.00.

The iMac giveaway is one per store location...
Random Drawing and Notification of Winners. A winner will be selected in a random drawing conducted at approximately 10:00 a.m. on October 25, 2003, from among all eligible entries received at this Apple Store location. The drawing will be conducted by a store manager, whose decisions are final on all matters relating to this Sweepstakes. The winner need not be present at the drawing to win.

I hate it when someone is using big words like "a clean sheet of paper... rethinking what a computer operating system actually is..."
The statement like this actually shows how clueless they really are - LIKE THEY'VE NEVER THOUGHT OF THESE POINTS FOR THEIR PRODUCTS UNTIL NOW - and that they have so far done nothing more than borrowing someone else's idea and repackaging it with massive marketing effort.
If there will be any truth in this hallow statement about overhauling the OS, then Longhorn will be released in... say, Year 2106.

There's really no mess in the install. The upgrade to Jaguar was rather painless. I hope Panther is the same. But I can empathize, I at least want it sent with my G5 if not already installed (which is also why I am waiting).

MS admired? Maybe for their cash reserves. :p
Yes I too cringed at the language. Can you say buzz word bingo? Read between the lines. If they weren't serious they could probably push Longhorn out next year or in early 2005. The fact that they have pushed it back 3 years should tell you something.

You can have some problem if you leave the Old Disabled System Folder on your HD after a clean installation. One example is that by click on one Package it execute the old Installer App. So... trash or compress it after installation.
