TUAW tentatively claims (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/02/07/rumor-apple-event-the-last-week-of-february/) that Mira Mobile (http://www.miramobile.com/) is hiring for an unannounced Apple event in the last week of February.

The company reportedly coordinates television services for sporting and other live events, including Apple's events. TUAW cautions that this is otherwise unconfirmed information, but speculates the iPhone SDK may be the subject of a late-February announcement. We received a similar (the same?) tip earlier this month, but were unable to confirm it.

Of interest, it does appear that Apple contracts out to MiraMobile for their AV needs. A video (http://isoflash.com/?p=6) documents the AV truck that was used at Macworld San Francisco's Keynote speech, which was stamped with MiraMobile's url:

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/02/07/175155-miramobile_300.png

Apple is due for a number of potential releases in the coming weeks: Apple TV software revision, MacBook Pro updates, and Mac OS X 10.5.2. The iPhone SDK, however, is the most likely to warrant its own event.

Why would they need a full event JUST for the SDK's, which could easily be quietly-but noticeably-announced? I do hope for several upgrades, the most important-judging from so many folks here in the forums-is the macbook pro's long due upgrade.

Goodness, always a reason to think a MBP is coming out on a given Tuesday/week. SURELY this is a guarantee that the MBP will be out by the end of the month. Right?

Because it is a huge thing for them to release the SDK.

They will most likely update a few other things simultaneously.

This sounds reasonable. If they held an event it would give Steve a chance to announce the SDK release and show how apps are going to work with the iPhone. It would also be a great time for Apple to release the updated MacBook Pro we have been waiting for. Hopefully there will be an event.

they will also showcase OS X 10.5.2, which i guess is going to have alot more features.

Damn. I just got one as a server and quiet computer for audio recording. Put that thing in a closet and you don't hear it at all. Only when doing some graphics stuff (eyeTV progressive de-interlacing). Oh well, I neede/wanted it, got it and I'm happy. Who needs CPU performance anyway? What's with you guys hoping for an aluminum MB??!!

MacBook Pros have aluminum enclosures and from what I hear, wireless connectivity absolutely stinks on them.

The MacBooks are well known for the fact that they DONT have a metal enclosure and that their reception is markably better.

I think if they changed the enclosure to aluminum:

A) You'd have pissed off about crappy wireless reception
B) Normal people (not necessarily us, lol) would confuse the MBP and MB

But maybe a backlit keyboard on the MB would be nice...

Because didn't a few companies say they have access to the SDK early? They're going to announce the broad release of the SDK along with talk about a bunch of new "groundbreaking" applications that will now be available for the iPhone.

I hope that one of the apps is Blackberry Connect. iPhone + Blackberry Connect + Business rate plans = several million iPhones being sold in the next month

Yeah it's a wonderful little machine. I use our Mini in much the same way. It's in the bed-room (Wired to the Airport BS Extreme w/ GigaBit) feeding media to our AppleTV and all the rest of the Macs. It's also the DVD/CD ripping station and the computer we use for iTunes transactions.

Of all the Macs I've owned this is my favorite form factor. Long live the Mini!

While I agree with you that it doesn't make much sense for them to make an aluminum MacBook, I believe they will eventually. Why? Because of this stupid "green" nonsense. Making plastic (petroleum) products will be a thing of the past for them eventually. It's stupid...

If you think it doesn't take petroleum to process aluminum then you are kidding yourself. Anything that requires heat most likely uses gas, oil, or electricity generated by oil. Apple and everyone else isn't escaping the dependency on oil that easy.

Not another 3 weeks.....!

I can't stand it (the wait) much longer.... :(

Do you remember in Disney's Bambi, when "man" enters the meadow? Momma bird is in the grass with her little ones, repeatedly warning them:

- Listen.
- He's coming.
- Hush.

- Be quiet.

- He's coming closer.
- Be calm. Don't get excited.

- We better fly.
- No. No, don't fly.

- Whatever you do, don't fly.

- He's almost here.
- l can't stand it any longer.

Then momma bird flies into the air and is shot down by ''man"....

That's how I feel.....I'm waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting some more.....and I'm 'this' close to purchasing my MBP but all instincts tell me to wait.....wait....wait.... because if I act on impulse now and make my purchase....I'll be sorry that I did not wait...........

But-

- It's almost here.
- I can't stand it any longer................

I like this idea. Make it a mini WWDC, but just for iPhone. Big Stevenote, then some workshops for devs (SDK crashcourse) and some nice presentations from teh select partners who already have access to the SDK. Lotus Notes, sling? exchange support?

So how likely is it that the MBP updates won't be released next Tuesday as per the rumors on this forum, but actually at the end of February at this event? I mean, going from the rumors, it's not coming out until the 10.5.2 release anyway, but are Penryn and the other updates to the MBP big enough to warrant release at an event rather than an update on the web? I'm ready to switch from PC... and I've been ready with my credit card since MWSF... *sigh*

Shua
Feb 7, 2008, 07:14 PM
My guess is they are going to do the iPhone SDK, and hopefully Apeture 2.0.
They just released an update for iPhoto so thats off the board. Final Cut Studio just got a rev not too long ago as well. New Hardware revs are most likely out as they upgraded the appleTV back at MWSF. More then likely it will be 10.5.2 now with new CPU support making the interferace 35% faster and a whole bunch of add-ons. Hence why the (4,1) MBPs are being held as if you do a benchmark with and without it won't be that noticable. As Steve loves his BOOM moments that he didn't get to have at MWSF. So thats my visual guess.

My guess is a week before the event they release the MBP Spring 08 Model ahead of time like they did with the Mac Pro a week before MWSF (or at CES) depending on how you want to look at it.

Seriously Steve! ONE BOOM??? Come on you let the Fanboys down! I normally have to use the people on either side of me and their feet to count them all!

As much as I'd like everything to be unveiled that we know Apple is working on/needs to address:

- Monitors
- Exposing users to Resolution Independence
- MacBook Pros
- Aperture 2
- Java 6
- iPhone SDK
- 3G iPhone

I don't think we will see anything that broad.

The fact we got bumped iPhone specs tells me the 3G iPhone won't be ready until summer/fall at the earliest. Maybe winter.

Monitors might be unveiled with the MacBook Pro (as you can pair the two products to make a desktop replacement), but then this is a bit of a longshot.

Aperture 2 is quite a big product in it's own right. I think it will be amazing, but I don't think Apple will want to dilute the message from the big one:

The iPhone SDK.

I think this is the big focus, but there is one more thing™.

.Mac

Remember at the D (all things digital) conference, when Steve looked Walt Mossberg in the eye and promised him .Mac would get better?

Hands up all the children in the class who thought he was referring to the .Mac Photo Gallery?

Good. No one has their hand up. :D

Now Apple has 3 strong products:
- iPod Touch + iPhone (or whatever you want to call this handheld wireless platform)
- Macintosh
-  TV

I think they will use .Mac to bring all these together in new ways over the internet. It may just be iPod Touch + iPhone and the Macintosh to begin with. This will link in directly with the SDK information, as Apple have always been keen for developers have to integrate into .Mac on the Desktop, why not extend this to the handheld?

So my prediction in short:

iPhone SDK + .Mac

Now is the time and it makes so much sense with the launch of the third party apps to really make the most of .Mac.

This isn't an entirely original prediction as MacOSRumors seem certain something is cooking with .Mac. I am just connecting the dots.

I really hope this is new MBPs, the waiting is unbearable, it almost seems like Apple want to skip the update now and not update until March/June etc., which is crazy as most of us have (perhaps foolishly) been expecting updates for the past 2 Tuesdays...

Thanks. It was a no brainer after taking graphic design where all we used were Macs. It's just been a matter of money ever since, and now that I do have the funds, there's this "wait till the upgrade or you'll regret it" crap... I'm aware that it's not a good time to buy the MBP, which is why I haven't yet. I don't want buyer's remorse mucking up the new Mac feeling I'll have when my MBP arrives. I just hate waiting. Patience isn't a strong point for me unfortunately.

What if the Apple UMPC using Silverthorne is coming out mid-summer, and what if it has 3G cellular builtin?

Definitely iphone/touch SDK. Steve will showcase the new features and the best apps.

I'm having a heck of a time keeping up with the possible updates-- can someone please refresh my memory as to what the SDK is all about?

I was planning on buying an iPod touch sometime this month-- I almost bought one last weekend, but with this rumor floating around I believe I will indeed wait out the rest of the month, hoping at least for a price drop/shift for the 16gb and 32 gb.

The new SDK is to be the premier platform to build for mac and iPhone. It really is 1 unified platform now, thanks to the delay of Leopard by 6 months.
This will be Steve's equivalent of Ballmer's "DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS,DEVELOPERS" presentation.

Well... I'm hoping for an update to the iMacs. They're due for a processor upgrade, if you hadn't noticed. I've heard some people request a better video card, and personally 2 GB of ram included isn't too much to ask, I don't think. Maybe a new mouse with some sort of touch sensitive top to it. Blue Ray would be nice as well.

Of course MBP updates and iPhone SDK can be expected.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

my prediction (for what it's worth) is the announcement of the SDK and the 3G iPhone (16 and 32GB) with iChat AV built in. iPhone 2 will be available from end of march and current models will be reduced in price by $100. Price for 3G iPhone? $599 for 16gb and $699 for 32GB

And my prediction (also for what its worth) is the SDK announcement plus some new application(s). No 3g iPhone yet (pretty sure about this since they just refreshed the iPhone/touch). However, I do think they may announce wireless Air/iPhone bridge (this would be a truly fantastic feature). There's a chance they will announce new MBP with some interesting features, but given Jobs's allusion during the keynote to how much new stuff they have to announce in 2008 they may deffer it to it's own announcement. I bet Apple will average a refresh or new release every month in 2008. They already have 3 so far this year (Mac Pro, Keynote/Air, iPhone/Touch refresh). New displays, MBP, and iPhone 3g all in the queue.

not without lowering the classics to $199 for the 80GB and $299 for the 160GB.
Then they would have to lower the nanos to $99 for the 4GB and $149 for the 8GB

UMPC is a Microsoft marketing term. So it won't be called this, whatever it's called.

Try an internet search for "UMPC site:intel.com", and tell me again that it's a Microsoft term. ;)

Silverthorne is designed for MIDs and UMPCs.

They are similar devices, but think of MIDs in the 4" to 5" screen, and UMPCs with 6" to 7" screens.

Let Apple try to call it what it wants, the industry is using the term UMPC.

Definitely iPhone SDK, showcasing new apps and how the process will work. Will be distributed though iTunes Store, like the PodCasts are.

Maybe - Possibility to make $$ of the apps, tops of 2 - 10$ per. Some will be free, if the developer wants it to be.

Probably - The Release of TV Take 2
Probably - New MacBook Pros with MultiTouch and CPU Upgrades.
Probably - 10.5.2 Released

Possibly - New MacBooks with MultiTouch, also an Aluminum Casing for an extra ~$150. The black and while models will still be up for grabs.

Not Likely - all Pink iPod Lines.

The SDK isn't a panacea, it's likely to be a disappointment for us folks used to a jailbroken phone. We already know that 1.1.3 introduces the "mobile" user instead of running apps as root. How much unfettered access to the iPhone's file system do you think Apple is going to give us?

Also, do you think AT&T will be okay with IM apps staying active on EDGE all the time and cutting into their SMS profits?

I remember while programming on a Mac a long long time ago (in Forth no less), those unannounced Apple Events were real buggers to chase down.

(Now who the hell knows what I'm talking about?)

Yeah... Forth was the language Cap'n Crunch (AKA John Draper) used to write EasyWriter (first WP) for the then newly available IBM PC.

He would get a furlough from his incarceration, and Woz would bring him by our computer store so he could debug his work.

Forth was very fast.... Draper could scroll a whole screen of (just entered) text into a DOS BSOD (Black Screen Of Death) in a fraction of a second.

He would then have a hissy-fit that usually emptied he store.

Ahh... the good times...

I wouldn't really call the MBP just an aluminum MB, but to each his own.

I'd say a MBA would be the suitable option for someone looking at a Macbook but wanting aluminum. What is the black MB made out of? Because when they first came out I remember seeing a difference in the materials between the white and black. I really only looked at them because of the keyboard and the magnetic latch that NEEDS to find it's way to the MBP

I want a mbp, but to the move the mb to aluminium seems kinda the way to go.
they removed the plastic look from the imac as well. What's left is the mb..

But then there's not much differnce anymore.

So maybe they merge mb mbp line and just will have 13 - 15- 17" model. Give them all backlight keyboard, and just the bigger models will have sep. graphic card.
(as people with the need for graphic power would most likely also want a bigger screen)

I do hope that you are being sarcastic.

Also, the aluminum casing used on the MBP is more recyclable and attractive.
The two main complaints are dents/scratches and reception. Apple can easily find ways to improve reception and/or strengthen the case.

They will find other ways to differentiate the lines.

Oh no. That's not the future. The consumer products are going to be aluminum and glass.

The Pro products (MacBook Pro and Mac Pro) are transitioning to an engineered paper case, constructed of at least 80% post consumer recycled paper with a naturally clear 100% cellulose protector for the screen.

Apple must appease Green Peace, and the new Pro products are going to be the most environmental friendly electronic products ever produced!

What is likelihood of this with SDK?

Analog Kid
Feb 7, 2008, 10:07 PM
I'm sticking to my initial prediction on the SDK, when they announced it wouldn't be available until February: the new SDK will be announced along side the next generation iPhone, and SDK apps will only work with the new phone.

I'm guessing the new phone is either dual-core allowing user apps to run completely independently of the main system, or the system has been re-architected severely enough to make Apple feel safe having strange code running lose.

Somebody mentioned a reiteration of the Apple TV releases, which will probably be dovetailed into this as well.

Why do people have their toes curled so tight over new MacBook Pros? Is it just me, or are we not expecting more than like a 6% boost similar to what we saw in the Mac Pros? Maybe a $7k quad core? Hardly seems worth all the angst. We're on the Intel train now-- every incremental step is carefully controlled to result in infinitesimal performance improvements.

It won't happen on a Friday because then Apple doesn't get all the buzz and press coverage during the busy work week. That is the main reason why most announcements and product releases from Apple happen on Tuesday. On a Friday, there would be little press over the weekend and they would lose the viral marketing that works so well for them.

In addition, they generally like to "start the buzz" about 10-14 days before the event so people will speculate what it is all about and be more attentive. There is too little time left before the 15th to make this a reality. Sorry....

Well here are my thoughts:

#1 Complete refresh to the Cinema Display line: LED-Backlit Screens with 1000:1 contrast ratio, much brighter, much higher response rate, more reasonable prices...a refresh to the lineup:

Drop the 20" - have a 23" a 27" and a 30" with the new LED-backlighting. Prices, $699, $899, and $1399

#2 New Penryn quad-core MacBook Pros with the new 45nm chipsets. Clock speeds 2.4GHz, 2.8GHz, and 3.2GHz - All LED backlit screens on the 15.4" and the 17" - possibly add a high end 19" MacBook Pro to the lineup, 1920x1200

#3 New Penryn-based iMac lineup refresh...same aluminum+black case. offer a 20" and 24", introduce a brand-new 30" iMac to the lineup. Clock speeds 2.4GHz, 2.8GHz, 3.2GHz (all quad-core)

Prices: $1199 (2.4GHz quadcore 20"), $1799 (2.4GHz quadcore 24"), $1999 (2.8GHz quadcore 24"), $2499 (3.2GHz quadcore 24"), $2899 (30" quadcore 3.2GHz)...other variations and prices possible.

#4 New Apeture release (as previously mentioned)

#5 Possibly refresh to Mac Mini sporting a 2.4GHz Core2 Duo, larger hard drive (200GB or 320GB), maybe featuring a better video card (dual-link) to drive a 30" display

#6 MacBook - update processors to 2.4 and 2.8GHz, same price, add an SSD option

...just a few ideas of things that would be great

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A93 Safari/419.3)

Definetly about the iPhone sdk. I also think they will realese iPhone SW 1.1.4 so that it can run the new apps. Also in 1.1.4 we will have the ability to sync notes and record video. Apple will also release iWork mobile. For people who need to be able to edit documents. There is a reason the brought out bigger iPhones and iPod touches.

1. won't happen. no LED screen supports 20 inch and up
2. 19inch MBP won't happen.
3. iMac refresh won't happen yet.
4. possible (unlikely)
5. won't happen. Mini is going to fade away
6. won't happen for a while, period.

Day Line Up

I think Apple was being really smart about releasing the capacity increases for the iPhone this week, before snippets of this event got out.

What, with news of an 'event' and AT&T's announcement of 3G expansion, people would have gone nuts, absolutely nuts, thinking iPhone v2 with 3G would be coming out. Imagine the sky high expectations resulting in bad things for Apple's stock after the event just ends up revealing higher capacity and SDK.

This way, people keep their expectations in check. What are the chances Apple updates capacity and 3 weeks later releases a whole new version. Excellent move by Apple to manage this crazy circle of secrets and rumors they're in, me thinks.

My guess for this "event"

1. iPhone SDK + possibly some new apps from apple and other major apps makers.

2. Apple TV Take 2 is shipping / software complete. Probably dovetail this with 10.5.2 being announced. [Better connectivity etc.?]

3. Possibly Macbook Pro / iMac refreshes to Penryn.

On the outside of the box: Surprise announcement that Apple / Intel teamed up again and sped up Montevina production and Jobs springs new Macbook Pros / iMacs.

Anyone who doesn't think this is going to be a press event to announce the iPhone SDK is available to general developers, as well as show off what the "premiere developers" have been able to come up with since they received an early version is going to be sorely disappointed. It will be an event completely about the iPhone; although I do wonder why they didn't just keep the capacity upgrades quiet for another couple weeks and release them at the same time...

They will not announce/release other products at this event... and they will get a ton of free press coverage for just mentioning the iPhone. This is the reason the iPhone was barely mentioned in the keynote.

Sorry, only ever heard it called that by MS really, so I just assumed… (wrongly). Thanks for the info.

Does anyone buy these things (in significant numbers)? I don't see too many about.

Not really for general use, although some embedded or special purpose tasks are deployed on them.

Some of it is chicken and egg - the super small form factor low power Silverthorne will give a big boost to these devices - smaller systems with much better battery life.

What was done during the last event:
Totally New products:
Time Capsule
MacBook Air

Updgrades to existing and well known products:
iPhone 1.1.3
:apple:TV take 2
iTunes Rentals

What was done out of the events:
MacPros
16Gb iPhone, 32Gb iPod Touch

What may we see IMHO:

Improvements:
iPhone:
- video recording, now that they have more storage capabilities, via software update
- longer duration of battery energy
- Landscape mode adjustable via settings to use any app in landscape mode

.Mac:
I agree with the previous poster who mentions that they will add more services/features to the .mac service to improve the integration with all the :apple: products and to increase the customer base using it.

Airport Express
To have 802.11n

iSight
Increase the video resolution in all the mac lines, or just the new ones to be announced, and the gradually when updating all of them

Out of the event:
- MBPs next Tuesday (you already know when)
- ACD with iSight and HDMI
- Games for iPhone/Touch

Trying to think in totally new products:
????
- The handheld device maybe, but it doesn't makes too much sense tight now with the MacBook Air recently released and with the iPhone/Touch SDK coming soon
- Something never needed before and that will become a :apple: vital digital product for us after year 2010
- ????
- I run out of ideas...maybe too much time at macrumors
- Please add yours...

Along with the SDK and maybe new video equipment, I'm with FCPNewbie and calling an introduction to the new version of the discontinued Shake, which is code named Phenomenon, and was said to be ready in '08. It should be just like Shake is, but running in realtime on the GPU, basically Motion on Hollywood Steroids...

And the MacBook Pros better be coming this next tuesday, if they don't, then I am expecting a big announcement about them at this event, more than a simple speed bump.

Feb 8, 2008, 01:14 AM
In any case, I think it seems most likely to be the SDK. Although I would be glad to see new MBPs. New ACDs would be nice and 10.5.2. The best however would be PowerBook G5!

First of all, MB should stay plastic. The white and black are sexy and should stay that way. Second, there is going to be SDK at this event. Come on apple even said that its the end of the month. Finally, I'm thinking the pros or the mini will come out. Personally I'm hoping for the pros. I can't wait to see the new ones.

Speaking of which are there anyone else out there that has grown gruesomel tired of anodised aluminum? I have been using powerbooks from the Pismo, and I bought the TiBooks (they were painted, mind you), went to the AlBooks and now the MBPs (with god awful metallic painted plastic keys – which, btw makes no sense. It's like plastic trying to look like wood. It looks cheap).
Anyone else tired of that look? Why not brushed raw aluminum? That at least looks "real".

This one (a MBP 2.33GHz) has the same finish as the cheapest booms and masts for an optimist dinghy.

I had a dream last night....

lots of time presenting SDK apps:

Games - for iphone/ipod touch - demos from EA etc.

apple:

-iWork apps for iphone/ipod touch.

-The mac mini to be replaced by.....the ipod touch/iphone.!!!
to explain: apple will release a dock that will let you use a usb keyboard/mouse and monitor/HDTV to enable you to use your ipod/iphone to browse web, email, open/edit/create office documents etc, play video, audio etc, just like you were using a desktop computer. iphone can connect direct to internet, ipod touch will need a wifi network of course.

Maybe: new cinema displays with the built in ipod/iphone dock
Maybe: 3rd party apps for ipod touch/iphone like high res camera/flash, gps units,

definitely not: no tablet until intels new ultra low voltage chips emerge later in the year.

I really hope this is new MBPs, the waiting is unbearable, it almost seems like Apple want to skip the update now and not update until March/June etc., which is crazy as most of us have (perhaps foolishly) been expecting updates for the past 2 Tuesdays...

Anyone else thinking apple should have just called the company Apple telecom after they dropped the term computer?

No show at PMA (no aperature update or even discussion if they are committed in a market where the pros have not been impressed with Adobes offering or Apples) - Now no NAB, what about the pros in 2008. This is NAB, a glance into what the companies have for us - apple has nothing.

What about the update or rather replacement for shake.
Lets not forget it took over a year to get a mac pro to the pros.

Macbook pros could have been updated when Intel announced a refresh...used to it was blamed on IBM for no updates, but now...ho hum bug...we can wait.

Im quite tired of the focus on iphone to be quite honest.
If this is just about an SDK for the iphone than steve needs to respectfully bow out of the pro market and hang it up.

Or maybe a better idea start communicating better with the pros. :)

Well, soon I will buy discreet and SGI and come out with competition for Apples pro line. ;)

Peace

- guys dont look past that which apple promised...SDK in Feb.
Remember they had a press event just for apple speakers...which do they even sell anymore?
Steve was into Hi-fi and no one else got into it, so it seems. Point is...it was a one product announcement.

Apple never over does it...and this year he didnt do his "one more thing" at Macworld. Surprised people didnt take note. Guess it was getting old.

Could be wrong, but it seemed that the HI Fi SPEAKER did not take off as jobs had initially thought. It may still be in the Apple store. Just seemed like it flopped from what I read. (Im not against HI FI at all) Personally I like my speakers to be where I can place them in different areas and not just a box in front of me. Again, not a bad product...

Point was really that Steve announces these events for items that are not even main stream mac items. (like a speaker...)and at the same time nothing else is announced.

Just trying to help people not to get over excited for items that may not be released. They may only see an SDK kit...

The following will be whined after: OS X 10.5.3, new MBP, PowerBook G5, new Mac Mini, new iPod socks, orange iPod, iPhone 3G.

The mac book pro is being whined about now, and for good reason.
For those who have had apple for 12+ years, one would know that they blamed IBM, Motorola, etc. for not being able to innovate and come out with new products.

Now intel releases new chips, and we dont even get a refresh. Who cares the body...just put the chip in it for the love of God. :D
Not that hard, really.

But instead people who have been with apple all these years are seeing Apples new commitment to a phone and an airbook. Neither of which help them with their pro apps, etc. (Shake...it was discontinued awhile back...no NAB, so does that mean Apple is super silent on their pro plans this year. Dont forget the Pros who had to wait over a year for an update to the towers.)

Yes its good to expand a business...dont leave behind that which made you though apple.

So bring out the Macbook pros, and again in May when Monteniva is out...shove those in there. No need to wait.
Those days of surprises steve are over. He never liked people knowing when he would release something.

But now surprises from STeve are bad, as it only means he chose not to put the chip we know about in the computer for the sake of the fact that everyone would know and not be surprised. ;)

Im probably not one to be asking about the iphone, as I have some pretty strong opinions about that item as a whole. :D

If it were me, I would wait until 3G was out - period.
This is the minimum they should have had to begin with. imo.

Again, each person has their own need, but ATT even said that Apple is coming out with 3G this year. But now that Steves thunder is stolen, does it mean he will hold back. (like what happened with the leaked info on the graphics card years back)

Point in the end is to get it...know what your getting, and be real with yourself. Will you kick yourself in the rear if they did come out with 3G in a couple of weeks? Then I would hold off personally, even if it goes a few months. The very fact you would miss that means that once you buy your device...the few months will fly by, and you will have wished you waited. :)

Peace

The MacBook Pro will most likely get released next week. The only reason for it to be updated at this event is if it has had a major redesign.

I just expect iPhone stuff at this event, plus maybe some info on the Asian launch.

Another possibility is of course BluRay support (watching and creation), but with the way things are going, they might decide to never support it and just push online video. (Seeing as Final Cut Studio probably has the poorest HD video support out of all the editing suites).

If this rumor is true, then there has to be a "big" item. With Apple so out of favor now on W$ and the media, Steve's Reality Distortion Zone isn't going to be nearly as effective. The next AE has to be more than announcing something that was pre-announced like the iPhone SDK or showing off speed-bumped products like a Penryn MBP. If that doesn't happen Apple is going to lose a lot of cred for crying wolf.

Which could also be the reason why they only release the SDK by now and not earlier as it would hint 3G features which Apple didn't wanted to tell before?

Why is Tuesday the magical day of the week? What is wrong with Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday?

I think, firstly, it is early in the week to have a full business week of "watercooler" talk and to sell the product while it is still brand new.

Why not Monday? If they were announced Monday, it would mean Apple would probably have to pay employees overtime for working the day before (Sunday) to get it ready.

One: Mira Mobile is going to be in trouble now that the rumor sites have figured out a new way to disclose Apple Events. :-)

Two: My guess is Apple wants to make a few things a "BIG Event" to follow up the "So-So" MacWorld Keynote. Although the MBA is cool, and AppleTV actually looks interesting now... Apple needs a shot in the arm... have you looked at the stock????

Either way... more cool stuff for us!

It has nothing to do with working the weekend. It has to do with timing in the press. Monday's are a busy press day. Lots of stuff gets put out on the wire on Mondays. Tuesday is good because you can get in early in the week, but announce in a less crowded field. Make sense? It's all about timing and Monday is not a good PR day.

I just don't see the point of an event for the SDK - it is a small group of folks that would actually code the apps versus the large group that would necessitate the 'event' I am voting that it is not just the SDK...

Crying wolf? You're getting your expectations too high, it'll be SDK and a couple of new iPhone apps.

I have to agree with you... besides it's the iPod line that excites Wall Street. They were disappointed in the slowing sales (only 5% growth) and that is what has tanked the stock. So, my guess is an iPhone update day, along with maybe a couple new updated toys... Come summer... I think that i when Apple will pull the trigger and announce all new iPods that will leave the competition in the dust... it's time for a BIG change .

The "big news" is not just the SDK... it's what their early developers have done with it that is big... this is a big deal because the day the iPhone becomes a platform people can develop for and customizable... it's in a whole new league and the possibilities for the technology is greatly expanded.

Besides... I go back to my earlier point... Apple needs to make this a big deal. they need the shot in the arm with WallStreet. But hey... it's a good time to buy Apple! :-)

I just bought a 23" Cinema Display. Do you think I should return it and wait to see if new ones come out...? It is unopened. I have three more days left to return it so I must decide soon.

Unless you must have Apple's style I would strongly recommend that you return the display and buy one from another company. You can get displays with better specifications for MUCH LESS money.

Adobe AIR is also finalizing and coming to 1.0 status in late February.
I would love to see that these two things were related as I just went to a small conference where the Adobe rep said hitting the mobile platform was a goal of AIR and is part of the reason they chose WebKit as their HTML renderer.
Nokia and iPhone use WebKit and these were both mentioned by him.

MacBook Pro? 3G iPhone? ALUMINUM MACBOOKS!?!?!?!?!:D

The possibilities are endless

Oh sure...the 3G iPhone is a big contender for Feb 26th. In fine Apple-style they just updated the iPhone to 16gigs ("wow, let's go buy one!!!"). Then they bring out iPhone 2.0 with 3G and improved bluetooth (hopefully) so all iPhone 1.x owners say, "Why did they do that?! I *just* bought one!!" Well, Apple loves your money, and we love Apple.

Of all products a 3G iPhone so shortly after the announcement of the 16GB iPhone is propably the most unlikely thing of them all.

i am so sick and tired of waiting for iphone second generation, and i'm not going to get worked up thinking it will be announced at the end of February. It won't be.

I'm guessing it will be a Town Hall style meeting regarding the SDK. That's all. No 3G iPhone because people that JUST bought the 16GB one would scream for blood. I also have a feeling that the new MBP will be released before then.

It will be some sort of an iPhone bump, either software or hardware based.

What are the chances that Apple has already popped in a 3G chip when they updated the storage-capacities? I mean, 3G chips can run on EDGE when there's no 3G available, so, conceivably, there could be a software update that "unlocks" the 3G option. Combine that with AT&T's recent news (http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/06/atandts-2008-plans-include-80-new-cities-with-3g-hsupa-network/) about increased 3G network coverage, Europeans (some of whom live in countries where EDGE just doesn't exist anymore) craving an iPhone of their own, and the SDK... That would make for a nice announcement, wouldn't it?

iPhone 3G "Unlock"

I don't know what kind of media you read/watch/browse in the internet, but most of the updates Apple announces on Tuesdays (and with "most" I mean everything except a new computer of gadget) don't make it to the news reports.
And we are talking about the US. In Europe, Apple is virtually non-existant except for new gadgets or computers.
How many people out there you think have realized that MacPro was updated one week before the MWSF? How many people do you think are going to give a damn about the SDK release or the introduction of Penryn processors?. I'm not talking about the Apple fanboys, but about the regular Mac user. I am working with 15 other people around and all of us use Mac computers. Half of them have not even heard about the word "Penryn". If these guys need a new computer today, they go to the Apple store and buy one no matter what. They don't care about imminent updates and don't even know that's going to happen.

not sure that they would put out a 32g iPhone. They'll have 8 and 16gig versions with 2.0, 3G, hopefully Silverthorne chip and improved bluetooth services. The cost and space issues of the cell chips in the iPhone are paralleled with the 32gig memory of the iPod Touch

I know what you're saying, but from what I've seen they get the press. I see every Apple announcement on CNet... most show up in the NY Times... even the little ones. Apple always posts their announcements in their RSS feed... so if you want to know about Apple updates, you don't have to look far. I would guess your colleagues just don't look at high-tech news. If they were interested they would know. Heck... even Yahoo Tech covers most of them... even the little updates.

I was just pointing out as to why they have chosen Tuesday's as their announcement day... Monday is not the best day if you want to be seen and I would bet there are many Apple employees working over the weekend before the Tuesday announcements.

haha..i believe i laughed out loud when i read that post. i think many of us go through that stage scanning the endless pages of ebay to see what our mac products can bring us in order to upgrade to the "fastest thing ever." Whats great about it though is no matter what mac product we buy or sell it always will bring decent money back to you. I say this to all of those people who are sitting on the fence right now trying to decide wether or not to buy or wait for apple to make the move. If you need a computer, laptop, display, ipod, phone, etc. get it. If you are worried about the next thing coming out and if its going to be faster than yours or hold more information and be able to have more ram on board than pick one up off ebay or craigslist from someone who has to have the "latest and greatest." Haha, I hope that didnt start to sound like Stevie's iphone apology speech. :D

I think also maybe the much speculated on 'missing' product announcement from the Keynote. Quite possibly the bigger iPod Touch/PDA/Tablet that we have been clamouring for for ever.

Erica Sadun over at TUAW reckons there is some evidence for it too. And she is like, well smart.

Plus, with all the rumors that are still floating right now there could be lots going on on top of the SDK.

ok, since the conventional wisdom now is that an event on the 26th is confirmed, what is the conventional wisdom on when the event would be announced to the media? is it usually one week in advance or two? seems that in the past it has been two, but i may be misremembering...

in either case, seems like there would be something from :apple: by the 19th at the latest or, possibly, as early as this coming tuesday (12th)...

I just read an article that says Apple had been trying to sell it's ProApps division.

Word on the street is that Apple has been shopping ProApps around since late last summer, and a deal was close last fall. Now such rumors have reached a fevered pitch, with ProApps apparently sold with all but the final announcement to be made. Potential buyers include Thompson, which has been on an acquisition spree of late, and would love to add an industrial strength NLE to its newsroom offerings.
No one will speak on the record for attribution. Until then anything can happen, but sources say morale in the ProApps group is low. Key members of the team have been moved to consumer-focused products like iMovie. Others have begun preparing for life after Apple.
If this is the case, Apple has little reason to throw a party for ProApps, and lopping a few million from the expense column makes the unit a lot more attractive to a buyer.

Anyone else catch wind of this or is this guy just way off?

Not exactly. The higher capacity iPods are actually using two chips. The 32GB model is using two 16GB cards because it would cost too much to have a single 32GB card.
