Do you have auto-hide set in the Dock preferences or is the Dock actually crashing?
If it crashes right after launching, try deleting the preferences in /Users/username/Library/Preferences/

It will delete the shortcuts you've added to the dock, but those aren't the 'files', just pointers to them.

LA la land...
sometimes when my dock 'disappears' and wont unhide for whatever reason, i press command-option-d and it will show itself.

does that work?

No nothing happens...but I did do a First Aid thing to repair permissions to see if that works..and all i got was:

Determining correct file permissions.
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/certs, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/classes.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/ppd, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/printers.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups/tmp, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups, should be 26, group is 0
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume

And i restarted and the same thing..so maybe something is wrong with the permissions....

I HAD a similar problem with the dock

see thread is located at:
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=57454&goto=newpost

Dock crashed (would go to 90% CPU and stay hidden) frequently when I used hot corners in expose. Turning off hot corners for expose fixed it MOST of the time.

What has seemed to really fix the problem is turning off the "slideshow" desktop picture I had changing every 5 sec, and changing to a static one. Since I did that, I've had expose hot corners back on for almost a week with no dock crashes, even when I TRY to get it to crash (see other thread on that)

Hope this helps!
