try system profiler and/or disk utility to see if the superdrive is recognised.
will tiger install on a G3 computer?
is the install disk a dvd or cd?
try the install disc that came with his version of OSX. is it dvd or cd

1. Yes, it's recognized by the ibook
2. I'm guessing so since i called my local Apple store and some tech told me i can run tiger
3. it's a burned copy of Tiger i made when i sold my copy on ebay
4. He bought it from a teacher of his who was selling it he just got the ibook, charger, and a airport card.

Burned copy, mhmm. Why don't you just say it's pirated?
There is a specific technique to getting the Tiger discs to boot when you restart your computer if they're pirated. You should be able to find the correct way to do it in the comments of a Mac OS X Tiger torrent on thepiratebay.org
Good luck. ;)

My old HS comp teacher made a copy of MY dvd of tiger for me since he needed one to fix his old ibook. so i'm not sure if it would count as pirated.

If you sold the disk, then you no longer have the rights to that disk. It is pirated.
Either way, a lot of external drives are not bootable. You probably have one of these and are not going to be able to boot from that drive.

G3 machines can't boot from USB.
If you have a retail Tiger DVD, you can contact Apple and get it exchanged for a set of CDs. That's what I had to do for my B&W G3.

do you have another mac with a dvd drive? boot the ibook into target disc mode via firewire and install the software on the mac targeting the ibooks drive.

You don't own the original DVD? Then you don't own the license anymore.
End of thread.
