View Full Version : Buying a phone to unlock...

Hi,

Tired of waiting for the iPhone to come out in Canada, I'm thinking of picking up a 16GB iPhone when I'm down in San Fransisco in a couple of weeks. I've been reading up a bit about the process of jailbreaking/unlocking iPhones, but I have a few questions:

1. Are there any problems buying iPhones from an Apple Store if you aren't American? I know they don't accept cash anymore, but will they accept Canadian credit cards, or do they insist on something with a US billing address?

2. I don't currently have a cell phone at all! I know I'll need a Rogers or Fido SIM card to put into the iPhone - can I just pick those up from a Rogers or Fido stall here in Vancouver? Do I need to activate them or anything first, and can I do that without an actual phone? What's the easiest/cheapest way to do this?

3. A new iPhone will likely come with 1.1.3 pre-installed. I've read some guides say that it's unlockable (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/category/iphone-fido/), whilst others say it isn't... Can someone verify that it can be done? Just to be double-sure!

4. I keep seeing references to TurboSIM and StealthSIM... are these necessary to make a phone work in Canada, or they just another method?

5. Does anyone know, from the European launches, if it's easy to turn an unlocked iPhone into a "legit" iPhone when they officially launch in that country?

Any help would be appreciated, or indeed any other advice about using iPhones up here in Vancouver...

Cheers,

Neil.
