Apple released iPod Software 1.3.1 today in your Software Update:

iPod Software 1.3.1 improves compatability between Mac OS X, version 10.3 Panther, and your iPod:

If your iPod requires updating, the iPod Software Updater will run and allow you to install iPod Software 1.3.1 the next time you plug in your iPod and iTunes is launched.

iPod Software 1.3.1 supports only iPods without a dock connector.

For more information about iPod go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod.

Gee, that's nice. Does anybody know if Apple plans to fix the iPod 2.1 software?

Oct 24, 2003, 04:11 PM

Am I missing something? iPod software 1.3.1 only supports iPods with a Dock Connector...? Aren't the G3 iPods (iPods w/dock connector) at iPod software 2.1?

withOUT a dock connector...

Doesn't seem to work for me. The updater says my iPod is 1.3 (up to date), and won't let me upgrade. This is on a second generation 20 gig iPod.

perhaps one needs Panther installed before it will let you update--

I have the OG iPod...here's hoping this will fix it's numberous issues or I'm buying a new one. Basically my iPod is unusable due to constantly freezing (mid file transfer, mid song, mid upload of files...WTF!?!?!?!?) Is this a scam on Apple's part to make my OG iPod garbage so I'm forced to upgrade? The new iPod's are garbage in my opinion, but I think my OG iPod has had it

Not trying to be difficult, I am curious - what about the new iPods is garbage compared to the old ones?

iPod Software 1.3.1 supports only iPods without a dock connector.

In other words, this is not for 3rd gen iPods. RTFP (read the fine print). ;)

I enjoy my new 40 gig more and more every day- I think it's awesome. And I thought my 20 gig was great.

I'll wait till more folks try out 1.3.1 and then I'll decide then for my 20 gig. I had no problems with the 2.1 update on the 40 gig.

Yeah, I've tried to and it won't let me update either...I'd have panther but it's sitting at home and I'm at my friend's house....I doubt that would help though as others have tried already and have panther installed...

Apple released this update as they found out that the old iPod 1.3 updater crashes on Panther. So they needed a bugfix for the updater.

This update DOES NOT change the iPods firmware. It just assures that you can run the updater on Panther too.

they are far too sensitive (requires hold key to be in place all the time)...and their battery life is about 2 hours shorter...and white and orange with a blue screen? im sorry but their design's are starting to get quite ugly imo...although it has a nice slim form factor...in any case i just smashed my 5 gb ipod out of frustration (i attempted to restore it...and it FROZE mid restore...so i said ***** you and smashed it with my hammer...what a waste of money) I don't plan on buying a new iPod either. The new iRiver may soon be gracing my desk (provided they improve mac compatibility). It has everything the iPod does plus loads more and a color screen for the same price...or i;ll wait on 4g or 5g iPod (give me color screens and mpeg4 support)

I don't mean they are GARBAGE...I'd love someone to give me one for free...but I don't feel like they have made any significant improvements from the original ipod to warrant an upgrade (aside from slim fom factor...at cost of battery life) and covering the firewire slot (hardly worth an upgrade) The new add ons are nice...but they need a better recording device (stereo should be the minimum nowadays). A cheaper iPod should be offered as well...I don't need more than 5 gb so why should i not have that option? basically they're turning the iPod into a portable storage device which is nice...but you can't use it to access any of the content in storage...and you can't access (without various apps) music unless it's in itunes specific directory...basically the iPod has far too many little issues that I feel need to be fixed, and alot of these issues aren't present in the OG iPod because it simply doesn't support the advanced functions. I could go on forever about no input etc, but I'll stop ranting.

you have 60gigs of music? what's wrong with you? I had trouble filling my 5 GB with decent music (i have well over 5 GB...but most of it is stuff I hardly listen to...i've found i only have 300 songs I like  )

any music suggestions? I like Tool, Rage Against the Machine, the Fugees, the Roots, Tribe, White Stripes, and just started listening to Jet. Used to love rap but now I've realized how truly horrible it is (it literally makes you stupider). So any musical suggestions along the lines of stuff above would be appreciated.

as proof it makes you dumber see above...stupider is not even a word

Well now, maybe if you didn't mistreat your devices, they would work

The iPod is a mp3 player. Apple's stretching it by allowing a card reader to work with it. They don't mean for it to be a cluttered media device, that people would use mainly for one thing, music.

Besides, I thought the buttons on the new iPods are red. In which case, the new iPods are red, white and blue. Are you not patriotic? Traitor!

I don't know where I posted earlier but if you read a message of mine you'd see just how un patriotic I am. Amazingly after giving my iPod a sever whacking with my hammer...the little sucker is fixed :D it's now dented and deformed but that just adds character ;) I smashed it good, and figured maybe now it'll allow me to restore and surprisingly it completed this time (maybe my 20th try...I don't think I've rebooted my comp this much since I got it) So if anyone out there is having trouble with an OG iPod get rough with it, it'll come around. On the RWB color scheme...Im quite positive it's orange (or at least it's orange in daylight) Many people at my school have 3g iPods and they all love my OG :D It's like Classic Coke, change the formula at your own risk.

If you're being serious about it actually working now, I'm guessing your hard drive is on it's way out...

Although I've been quite rough with my iPod in the past (plenty of drops) so I kind of expected this anyways. I'm just glad I don't own a Power Book.

Only when using the backlight, the screen is blue, and the text of the buttons is reddish/orange (not the whole button). When the backlight is not active, the screen is just black and white, and the buttons are white with slightly darker text.

Oh my, I didn't see that Panther note when I first read it. Now why did Jaguar tell me to update to something for Panther? That's curious.

Speaking of Panther, just played with it a bit at the CompUSA, too much traffic to Denver this evening, so I didn't visit the Apple Store. I'll bet that would have been more fun.

No but I have never updated my firmware beyond 1.2 I have a 20Gig 2nd Gen ipod ie no dock connector. Since all updates for 1.3 have been for 3rd gen ipods and I have 1 gig download limit I have never downloaded the updater till today. But its still says My firmware is 1.3 and no need for update.

The battery life on mine is sufficient. The screen backlight is white, not blue. The red backlight for the buttons is a nice touch. But if you don't use backlight, you won't ever have to see it.

A color screen on a music player is like a gun rack on a bicycle.

Stereo requires two mics. What's the freaking point? It's meant as a tape recorder for lectures, not as a portable recording studio!

Because a 10 GB hard drive is just as cheap to make, and you can backup your files on it too.

It's always been that. It's a portable hard drive, man.

try incubus.....their science album is great...or any of the newer stuff would be good too, or even the old stuff...it's all great! The chili peppers too....Nirvana....Bob Marley, Marilyn Manson...definitely the Foo Fighters....try them all...there was this thing online that you can type in three bands you like and it'll suggest some...I'm basically that service by myself...if you like tool definitely try A Perfect Circle....APC's singer is Maynard from tool....also 3 doors down....Jimi Hendrix....maybe India.Arie because you like the Fugees....if you need more lemme know...

If this software is updated to fit the new cat, are there other "updates" on the way? I'll be recieving my update next week and I'll make sure to make a software upgrade just before I do a clean install.

yeah... the problems with the 2.1 software are on apples support boards.

the ones i encountered were, screen flickering when using the backlight, and flakey battery meter (it never indicates a charge of more than 25%)

i did a restore to 2.0.1 with the original CD that came with it.

Seems like I did that to my 1stG 5GB when the update first came out. I thought I might get some of the 3G features but got skunked. I think I wiped it in Disk Tools or whatever and ran iPod 1.3(?) restore. Anyway it's been working fine since. Gave it to my GF and my 3G 15GB sees daily use at work and in the Jeep.
