Only been running it for the last hour, so hard to say, beyond the interface improvements.

So far, it seems more responsive in the Finder.

A big "two thumbs up" for Apple listening to feedback: Menu Bar Transparency OPTION. The stacks options are also very welcome. Now I can tell at a glance which folder is the Desktop and which is Downloads.

biggest improvement for me is the attention paid to the airport drivers which, presumably will put an end to the constant kernel panics triggered by azureus and other bt clients.

the menu bar is great too. at last i can use a bg image that isn't dark gray!

I have so far not personally seen any improvement (yes, I am aware of all various tweaks like the translucent menu bar option, etc., but I am not using them), and I rather miss those slightly-transparent menus. :(

<Looks again> It was but I found that to be quite messy looking, especially in screen shots.

True, I guess that it's just a matter of opinion.

Edit: ... And apparently enough users didn't like the transparency for Apple to remove them.

It's ok Let's just wait and see how stable it is right now I haven't had too many airport issues but still some maybe it will prove to be More stable and workable Only time will tell I just want them to completely fix the airport issues then it would be nice. But Stability First.

Applications seem somewhat more responsive but it's more Finder and Safari. Overall it's decent but no major changes for me.

Installed, no problems, and perhaps it's just me but Finder does seem a little slicker. I won't use a lot of the new features/changes but it's nice to see Apple listening to the requests of its user base.

Sure, but I remember their transparency being a lot more noticeable.

I think they should add a slide bar in the appearance settings that let you set how transparent menu's are, and the menu bar. everyone has slightly different uses and slightly different taste. This would be more effective than a checkbox on the desktop screen IMHO.

But I am very excited about the Dock/Stacks fixes. :-)

Good riddance to stacks!

I can't tell you how many times I've clicked on the applications stack thinking it was the address book.

I can't tell you how many times I tried to find the file I just downloaded but couldn't since the downloads aren't in a sensible order.

Now I can make the stack icon be anything I want it to be, and I can display the list in the order I want (therefore, it's not really a stack any more at all). Finally!

I'm very pleased, as a relatively new mac user (I've only had mine since the beginning of January) I'm pleased to see such improvements from updates.

My mac feels a lot faster and smoother over all.

Very happy :-)

this is definitely the best part of this update, i agree!! especially when my downloads stack dealy would go up and curve off the side of the screen and would just be annoying to have to go all the way up to click on "63 more in finder." color me excited (with a brushed aluminum finish)!!

So far so good. The only problem that I had was after I restarted after install, the video was sluggish as heck. I couldnt type in forms, Notes, anything cause it was so slow. When I drug windows around on the screen, it looked like I was using a video card from the 90's. Luckily, after I restarted it a second time, all is running smooth. I havent really had a chance to mess around with it though and see how things are running.

They fixed the use of web proxies, which was causing various applications to crash (I'm guessing some when they were checking for updated versions). Sure, not so many useful new features for me, but fewer crashes is always a plus.

This happened in 10.5.1 and is still happening in 10.5.2, in order to load the Monitor ICC profile you have to open "Display pref" then it loads. It only happens sometimes.

Where is this?

Never mind I found it. But why under desktop ? In my mind the logical place to put this is the appearance preferences.

After the last Quicktime and iTunes updates, Safari and Spotlight were broken on my system. Both Firefox and Google Desktop served as great replacements, but I didn't appreciate being forced to enlist these alternatives.

10.5.2 restored Safari and Spotlight for me. Thanks, Apple engineers. We appreciate your hard work.

As for the approximately two percent of users experiencing major problems with the update, I feel you pain. I hope a system reinstall will work for at least some of you. Before this update, I was strongly considering going back to Tiger, which was the most rock-solid OS I've used to date.

Having preordered Tiger and used it since the very beginnings, I can say that 10.4.0 and 10.4.1 were anything but rock-solid. I am sure Leopard will be there as time goes on.

As someone who is not (and at present cannot be) a Leopard user, I'm obviously not using 10.5.2.

However, the reason I'm here is to keep tabs on what you folks who can and do run 10.5.2 think of it over the long haul.

It's going to be a while before I can afford a new Mac, and so I'm in no desperate rush; however I also don't want to buy a new, Leopard-only Mac until I know any and all big, bad, or reasonably possible-to-encounter bugs and glitches are worked out.

So true. All of my performance issues with Leopard revolve around Safari. It hangs all the time, quits randomly, and needs to be force quit if I want it to quit (command Q causes it to hang indefinitely)

Well, 10.5.2 is speedier, overall more refined, and mostly a great impromevent.

But for the first time since I installed Leopard, it also made my mac freeze.

So I voted "worse". On the bright side, I'm using XP now and am re-discovering all my games that I can't play on OS X... it's kinda sad but I migt stay on the dark side for a while

I had major problems with the installation. Something went wrong with the install via Software Update. I got some kind of failure message, but About this Mac... said I had 10.5.2. The Finder was super effed-up!

Through great difficulty, I managed to install it properly using the Combo Update. Seems OK to me.

One thing I realized is that I had to replace my 4-year-old G5's video card about a month ago and all I could find at my local Fry's was a Radeon 9200. The problem with it is that it does not support Quartz Extreme which has the fortunate side effect of not supporting some of the silly irritating eye candy.

I'm just bummed that I can't use Photo Booth anymore :(, but that's the video card's fault and not 10.5.2's.

Interesting - mine's the opposite. After 10.5.2, both an AirDisk and share from another 10.5 Mac have been totally stable. Neither has dropped ("disconnected" message) on wake. The responsiveness has noticeably increased, too.

Somewhat related, both AEBSs show up instantly in Airport Utility. Before update, it would hunt for them. Sometimes, "Shares" listed in Finder would disappear and at the same time - Airport Utility would not find one of my AEBS, even though I was connected to it. This has all been fixed in 10.5.2.

I chose "Better" primarily because it resolved the only bug I had run into with Leopard (Bluetooth not working after waking from sleep).

On the other hand, I don't like the reduced transparency of the menus, and haven't come across any new features that were really needed. I was happy with Stacks "as-is", and didn't have any performance issues with the operating system as a whole. It was sort of a mediocre update, but since it resolved my only bug, i'm happy with it. :)

I bit the bullet and installed it. After a 15 minute download and 6 minutes of installing, there were no problems whatsoever.

As far as the improvements.... I don't really care. I liked the translucent menu, so I didn't use the option to turn it off. I abhor the list-stack thing (to me it looks like a messed up version of Windows Start menu). I do like the Time Machine icon, so (probably like the rest) removed the one from the dock.

Also don't see a noticeable difference in speed, crispness or whatever, so on the whole I am quite neutral. Just one welcome addition in the form of the Time Machine icon, but truth be told if it weren't there I wouldn't have missed it.

I'm very pleased with 10.5.2. I love the new Time Machine menu item. I am also very happy now that I can view stacks in the list view.

Finder is much more responsive and snappier. The Leopard Graphics update smoothed transitions when toggling spaces in slow motion using the space bar. Before, the Spaces windows would stutter during the transition if several finder windows were opened in Cover Flow mode. Now, it is much improved.

I've had quite a few kernel panics with the airport driver. So far none, could just be luck though.

One side effect I noticed for the stacks improvement: I have shortcuts to my parallels VM's (the VM's are on an external drive). I used the 'fan' mode as a pop-up menu. The list view seemed more appropriate for that, but when in the list view, I get an error -13 saying it cannot launch the application. Switch back to 'fan' view and it goes away. Straaange....

cheers,

Rich

They fixed a whole ton of Airport issues including the painful kernel panics when using torrent clients. On that basis alone it qualifies for 'better' if not 'major improvements'.

Definitely a step forward. At this pace by the time 10.5.5 or so rolls around in summer things should really be solid.

My wi-fi drops about every minute, I have a D-Link DIR-655 router and an 802.11n card in my Core Duo BlackBook and it's been nothing but trouble, It's really really annoying. It forgets my school network whenever I wake from sleep so I have to re-enter it, and I have to resend about every IM and forum post about 3 or 4 times for it to take.

My sister is having the same problems with her SR 2.4ghz 15.4" MBP; and of course she's not the technologically inclined type, so she keeps bugging me about wireless not working, I tell her it's out of my hands that 10.5.2 broke it for us, and she won't accept that 'Why would Apple break something?' umm, obviously not intentionally...

Overall better but...

MAJOR PROBLEM: Spaces & Adobe CS3 Suite

I have the various CS3 programs set to their own space. When I flip form one space to another, the tool bars dissappear. I have to manually re-select the tools from the menu for Illustrator, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver.

I don't recall this being a problem in 10.5.1

Hi, I now have problems with the apple wired keyboard. After some time it stops working and I need to restart. Repairing permissions has no effect. I think it may be iTunes-related as it only seems to happen when I've been using that (with 2 airport express stations).

Anyone else with the same issue?

For some reason, I've been monitoring the results of this poll on a spreadhsheet.

If you only consider those people who have installed, then the percentage who either have problems or major problems has steadily risen from 5.41% up to a current 6.46% and rising.

That is one in every 15 people. Quite a large percentage of installers are having real difficulties with 10.5.2

We speak of the millions of people who successfully install new software, and the few who experience problems who skew the discussion forums. But 6% is really high.

Six percent is high, without question. However, a large percentage of this percentage of users have since resolved their problematic issues, and there seems to be no way for one to adjust one's initial response in these polls to reflect this. Overall, it seems a large number of users are inclined to reactively set off a bug alarm before attempting to trouble shoot - for example: trashing old preferences, repairing permissions, restarting a Wi-Fi base station, etc. So far, 10.5.2 has been a very solid and stable update for users I know, as well as noticeably enhanced in terms of speed and response. If third party software is interfering, then one can choose to disable those apps which are not yet properly compiled, and wait for those developers to catch up. We need also to take into consideration that we're dealing with the largest wave of new users that Apple has encountered in history. Of the 6%, 5% of their issues are not overly complicated and are likely easily resolved.

I have been using a Mac for 20 years. Since I got my Intel Mac Pro with Leopard, I have lost count of how many times my computer has crashed. AT LEAST once a week! It's the first time in my life that I have been unhappy (to say the least!) with a Mac. :-(
I did have a PPC with Tiger (if I remember correctly - must be getting senile) on it. I finally had to take it in to the Apple Store for repairs because one day I could NOT get it to boot! I let my son play games (only) on my computer, and he may have been the instigator of the problem. The AS techs discovered they couldn't repair it, so they offered to swap it for the Mac Pro I'm now using. That's when my opinion of the Mac OS began turning very sour indeed. I am SO sick of it crashing!

Anyway, I have not been able to see a noticeable improvement with Mac OS X 10.5.2.

It is possible that there is a program/application(s) that are not playing well with each other and causing the OS to crash.

I have not had 10.4.x or 10.5.2 crash on me or any other Mac OS 10 series with the exception of the 10.0 release which was a nightmare. I remember that 10.3.0 did crash my external hard-drive which lead me to lose a lot of important data (sour about it at the time....moved on since). :)

I see this update as one of the most important patch updates ever to Mac OS X. I love the feature for the folders in the Dock to only show the folder instead of the dynamic-built Stack. The start-up time of Leopard has been slower than Tiger, so anything I can do to reduce the time to login and get started is good.

It also seems that the people at Leopard are never quite certain how transparent they want the menus. They played around with the transparency for several versions of Mac OS X, and Tiger seemed to be a good balance with menu transparency. Then with Leopard, they decided to play around with things again, and the menus were overly transparent again. 10.5.2 has barely left any transparency in the menus, and I had to look hard to see any transparency any longer.

Still, this release was more about minor (but important) features instead of just trying to fix things.

I love updates. Something about feeling like things are better today than they were yesterday makes me feel happy. Luckily it hasn't caused any problems for me, otherwise I would feel differently, I'm sure.

10.5.2 has gone well for me so far. Back to My Mac is finally working from the office to home (although screen sharing is painfully slow), but it is still not working from home to the office (I can't see my office iMac at all - probably a firewall at work preventing it). Everything else seems to work as well as 10.5.1; I really didn't have any major problems before.

Installing 10.5.2 and the graphics update has generally been positive, though some niggling issues remain (for example, as other people have reported, the desktop pictures panel will not correctly add a folder but instead duplicates the Aperture entry - I've had to delete the display preferences plist to restore the original settings).

However, Splinter Cell under Rosetta now runs a treat on my MBP with 8600 GPU :) Prior to the update there was a great deal of texture / depth buffer corruption on certain levels it spoiled the experience of playing the game. I know people constantly go on about the maturity of Mac OS video drivers - this is a definite improvement! Thanks :apple: !!!

I installed 10.5.2 on server and it lost everything. all my users and groups, had to go in via root user and rebuild everything. nightmare...

A week? Try more like a month. It has 26,676 votes.

In case you guys haven't noticed, a new poll only comes out once in a blue moon, or when Apple does something new.

Then instead of "Brand new poll every weekday..."

Would a better motto be "Brand new poll every week or so, sometimes, when we feel like getting around to it..." :D

If you want a new poll why not submit your own ideas

The last idea I sent them was a suggestion to change their "Brand new poll every weekday..." slogan, since it's total ********. I don't understand why they'd have it there when it's obvious they don't even come close to having a new poll every weekday. It just makes them look bad.

edit: diggity-dang, I can't even say *********?

I'm so upset . Much of our creative efforts take using the voices on the Mac.The most perfect voice ever was Vicki in the 10.4.10 incarnation . The one of our computers that upgraded to the 10.5 had to erase and archive install back to the 10.4.10 to get the real " Vicki " back . If ever Apple were to use a different voice synthesizer for the girls than the guys then they could have the so-called perfect " Alfred " and the so-called perfect "Vicki" ! I hope my dilemma will be resolved by the return of the real Vicki . I get the creeps from the new voices they sound so calculating and cold . We would like to get back to the future , I hear they changed the stacks thats the only other thing I didn't like . Everything else about the 10.5 I really like so if they've already fixed this in the 10.5.2 then please tell me !!:apple:
