I'd suggest booting from your restore disks, launching disk utility, and repairing your permissions. See if that does it. If not, you should be able to restore back down to 10.5.1 with time machine(provided you are using time machine). Then I'd repair your permissions on 10.5.1 and update again.

I've had this before, although not with this upgrade, here's how I solved it.

Restart in safe mode (by holding shift down as you restart).

When you see a list of users, don't login but hit the restart button instead.

The software update starts again - let it do its thing.

...did the trick for me - hope it works for you!

worked great thanks

the guys in the apple support told me to bring it in
I thought i'll lose with it 2 weeks of work
thank you so much superscape

Success

I will confirm that booting into safe mode and then rebooting does indeed restart the update process, which results in a functional mac. Many thanks to superscape.

Thank god

I just got an :apple: and I freaked out when I got the welcome screen problem... thanks for the fix. I was about to curse apple's name.

Worked like a treat

Thank you for your post superscape! I was seriously cursing Apple until you provided a fix!
