So every time my iPod is plugged in it asks me if I want the update...
I DON'T!
I have clicked no thanks, remind me later, but it always comes back...
How do I get rid of this damn thing?!?

Ran into that same problem today.
Turn your modem off (disconnect your internet connection), quit iTunes, then restart. You should be able to get to you iPod page.

My son's began doing this as well. If you 'control' click on your Touch (in the left column in iTunes) you will get an option to sync. I can't seem to get past this glitch any other way.

If you right click and select "Sync", will it automatically start syncing (don't want this because I manually sync), or will it take you to your iPod Touch's normal start screen (this is what I want)?
The persistent January upgrade screen is a real problem. I can work around it by turning off my wireless each time I start iTunes, but that is not acceptable as a long-term solution.
This reminds me of years ago trying to cancel a trial version of MSN, and the MSN software would not allow me to do so. That tainted my view of Microsoft ever since, and this has the potential of a similar outcome with respect to Apple.

Well, maybe because they don't want to fork out the 20 bucks just to get a mail client, especially when it's likely one will be available for free soon after the SDK's released?

same here, can't get of this fkn update offer!!!
Only way to sync is right click and Sync.
Wtf apple is thinking, forcing update into your face like this?!?!
Overall I can say iTunes is one of the worst softwares I have ever used - slow, buggy etc. and now this.

Two workarounds and a solution for this problem. ;)
Workaround #1: click the little X in the Now Playing window up at the top of the iTunes window as soon as the Store starts to load. It might take a few tries, but eventually you'll get to your iPod main screen.
Workaround #2: (for Mac users) use LittleSnitch to block outgoing connections from iTunes. You'll get a pop-up warning you that iTunes can't connect to iTMS, but after you click OK you'll be at your iPod's main screen.
Solution: downgrade to iTunes 7.5. I did this yesterday, following this guide (http://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2008/02/08/downgrade-itunes-76-to-75/) (Mac only) and while time consuming, it solved the problem completely. :D

I'm having the same problem with mine. I find it quite annoying that iTunes continues shoving it in our faces. No matter what I click (No Thanks or Remind me later) it goes to the store and doesn't go away.
Another huge problem I'm having is No Summary Tabs! On the left of iTunes I can find my Touch, but when I click it all that comes up is the Update screen. The only right-click option is Eject.
It shows capacity, version, and model # all as n/a. I don't know what to do.
I recently updated my Jailbroken iPod to 1.1.3 because I was tired of the Apps.
I've restored twice, erased my iPod through "Settings", and used two different computers.

Glad other people are experiencing this.
I hate that damn iTunes store, never spent a cent there in my life.
So far disconnecting from the internet has been working for me.

I called Apple 24 hours ago...
They said they new about the problem and would be fixed very soon...
Still is not fixed. This is unacceptable.

For anyone complaining, the message goes away if you purchase the upgrade. I have to tell you, it's £12.66 well spent IMO.
Mail & Notes are worth the charge alone.

Okay, well now it is not technically stuck on this screen...
Now it only comes up every single time you plug in your iPod!!!!
This has been happening to me since this update came out!
I click no thanks, I get an error, I click ok on the error and I go to my ipod main screen.
Happens all over again everytime!

This worked for me, thanks a lot!
I also shared your workarounds at the Apple Support forums (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6593486#6593486). :o
I had called Apple support 2 days ago and was told that the problem is with the music store server...I think it's a scam to get people to upgrade...

You don't have to spend a cent in iTunes store. There are plenty of audio and video podcasts of all topics, available for FREE.

Woah there Mr. Generalizing McSimpleton..
Podcasts are in video and have some really cool discovery channel podcasts. 60 Second Psych Podcasts are interesting, as well as most of the science discussion podcasts.
Oh, and if you missed PTI, you can get the full version on audio!
And If you like 60 minutes on TV, you can get the full audio on there.
And my favorite podcasts are the video podcasts of TEDtalks. If you don't know what they are, they are the most influential, interesting, and mind gaging talks in science I have heard. Also political talks, but there are so many to pick from that you don't have to be stuck on "political jargon".
And...indie music is not so prevalent in podcasts, as they are more news and discussion oriented.
I think it is amazing that these things are free.

That's great, but I am not interested in the iTunes Store.
I wish I could just have iTunes with out the store.
Especially now since they keep shoving that Jan. update in my face.

Getting back on topic. I have this problem also. The above workarounds work great. Thanks for sharing them folks. I think its a shame that apple is pushing this update on purpose to touch users. I hope its fixed soon.
