Sierra Aircard 555 not working in Panther

I used the widely available instructions listed on the internet for making my Verizon Sierra Aircard 555 work with OS X but when I upgraded to Panther it stopped working! I have emailed the author of the original instructions but wondering if anyone else has same problem or suggestions???
 
The problem with some of the hacks to get unsuported hardware to work is...

Any system upgrade/update can overwrite the file you modified and render the hack nonexistant.
