YDL: How to install on firewire external

OK, let's see if anyone can give me some info on installing YDL onto an external firewire drive. I did some quick googling, but all I found were some pretty complex instructions that still involved me partitioning my internal drive.

Is there a way around wiping my internal drive?

Hmmm...maybe I should try a different distro...do any of them support installing to an external drive?

well the alternative is to move your Mac system files onto the firewire drive, and then clear the internal drive, partition it, and then install yellow dog onto one partition, and then move Mac OS system files back onto the other partition.

But seriously... why waste your time with Yellow Dog? i found it really laggy and a general pain in the ass, i've been getting all the unix i need out of Darwin ... but if you really want to try i suggest my work around...

Yeah, I know that's an option, I was just hoping there was a way to do it directly.

And I want to check out YDL just out of curiosity. :)

i was looking for this route, and all the distros i looked at (mostly through googling) had pretty limited success with installing on an external firewire. you may try googling again and looking through the YDL lists. in the end, i backed up my mac OS install, partitioned, and installed YDL on the internal drive.

i actually found YDL to be pretty laggy too, but i think that was because of some botched KDE install on the version i used (2.3). so i switched to debian and it runs great, turned my aging powerbook g3 to a pretty snappy unix machine...

i could see YDL being pain not being run off the internals, since it was already a pain running off the internals

i suggest using the work around... it will take a little bit of time to transfer everything over to the Firewire drive i'm sure, but probably less time then trying to surf the net and finding a solution

and ya, if you wanna try it to satisfy your curiosity, go ahead, i used it before i got OS 10... i prefer using terminal is OS 10 because i'm more familiar with the file structure of the OS then i was of the Linux OS, which made it hard to really do anything ... but if you like to experiment... hey sounds good... my concern was that i felt a huge slowdown

Alright, thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm about to get all my stuff backed up for a clean Panther install, so I may as well wipe the internal drive and try it out.
