That is absolutely amazing. What's the Teraflop gap between Big Mac and the second fastest computer? I know that the difference between Big Mac and Earth Simulator is pretty huge. The price difference is also pretty huge.

The second place system is rated at 13.88 teraflops using some 8160 CPU. To achieve this is phenomenal.

"A unit built from 1,100 Apple Macs has achieved a speed of 8.7 teraflops, putting it in line to be the third fastest in the world--at a fraction of the cost of the two machines ahead of it."

So they always say that the Mac is so expensive. Being 3rd is not so bad when the cost is at a fraction of those above.

Awsome! That's all I have to say. $5m to build the 3rd fastest computer on earth, and not from special kit, just by clustering consumer available desktops, fantastic!

And, if my guess is correct, they can still just pile on more G5's and increase the speed... that would be cool.

How fast would $250mil worth of G5s run?

(I think the earth thing cost 250)

Yeah that is really really cool.

For a cheap system thats hard to beat by the G5 today.

A really sweet deal.

Are they officially calling it the "Big Mac" now?

Wow...But we actually know what this cluster is made of, don't we? :)

BTW, the cost of the Earth Simulator, remember, is not just the supercomputer, but also the earthquake-proof structure it lives in. That said, as soon as the G5 Xserve Cluster Node is released, I think someone's going to take that to #1.

Finally, a Mac that'll get decent framerates in Halo! ;)
