View Full Version : PowerBook 12" Hard Drive Replacement Difficulty?

My G4 12" PowerBook hard drive is dying and needs to be replaced.
I have some detailed instructions or a local Apple Authorized Repair Center that can do it for $100-$120.
I have reasonable technical ability. (popping keyboard keys off doesn't sound like fun though).
For those that have done this should I pay the money to have it done or give it a shot doing it myself??? (This laptop is my backup but I would like to not screw it up too badly)

I used to have a Powerbook G4 and I took it apart twice. I have to say it's not a walk in the park to get to that hard drive. I doubt you could ruin your computer easily by doing this yourself. You basicly only have to take your keyboard out, and then the panel where your keyboard is. Just make sure you organize your screws properly so you don;t lose track of where each one goes, there will be many screws you have to take out. Just follow this guide and you will be fine.

its not incredibly hard. took me about a half hour or so to replace mine.
www.ifixit.com has guides on how to do it. as long as you have the right sized tools you'll be good to go and don't mind the hassle.
