Hey back again.
This time i really really peed off at leopard.
IM ACTUALLY CONSIDERING GOING TO VISTA.
I upgraded from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 and have had nothing but problems.
Every time i boot up my mac my "Macintosh HD" is missing i have to type in a new script just so it shows for 5 mins, And ive just found out ALL of my .AVI movies have disappeared in a day, they were all there yesterday and not today, Apple have screwed me over and over again and im sick of it.
Im considering moving back to windows, the problems were vast, but they were not this severe.

reapply the combo update (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate.html)

xUKHCx gave so good advice. Have you tried reinstalling the operating system from scratch? The majority of us have used OS X for years without any significant trouble.

what do you mean reinstall?
Reboot from the Leopard 10.5.1 disc?
Or reinstall the new update (10.5.2)?

What I meant by from scratch is from the original installer discs. Which version of OS X is on them?

Wont i lose all my files by reinstalling "from scratch"?
and its 10.5

Clean install and upgrade to Mac OSX 10.5.2 before you install anything else.
That's what I did and I haven't any problems at all (aside from a few glitches I mentioned in another thread).

I always think it is worth just reapplying the latest combo update on the current install rather than going down the complete reinstall route. Best case scenario it works (potential time saved = large) worst case it doesn't work, complete reinstall (time lost little)

I really cant lose all my files they are so important documents.
Videos and other files.
I cant risk losing them.
Is there another way, try phoning Birmingham Apple Store tommorow?
See what they suggest?

and its 10.5I'm going to go out on a limb and hope that you have some sort of backup.

I was simply asking if they ever have done a clean install after having all of these problems.

Ahhh well you see
My only back up hard drive is formatted to NTFS (my windows computer) i think because i can read but not write on my hard drive.
I will try reinstalling 10.5.2 before i make any rash decisions, because losing ALL my files would just elevate the problem i have now to a MAJOR SCALE.

Check the trash can for your missing .avi files.
Also, try typing the name of one in to Spotlight and see if you can find it that way. Hopefully, you've just misplaced them (maybe an accidental drag-and-drop).
If files really are spontaneously disappearing, you've got a bad hard drive.

No this problem is not a bad hard drive.
This never happened ever before i upgraded to 10.5.2 the moment my computer restarted my Mac HD was no more and my avi files.
Checked my trash ..nothing, spotlight is only coming up with... Knocked Up.nfo ( information files for my dvd)

If files really are spontaneously disappearing, you've got a bad hard drive. The most common cause has been the loss of access to your home directory. It happens more often then you think.

Is this the "spot what is missing" game?
Wow, a film is missing from its folder. Sure you haven't moved it anywhere? Upgrading to 10.5.2 wouldn't move files like that around.
Just do as others have said, get an external hard drive (they cost next to nothing now-a-days), use Time Machine and backup your Mac. Then format and install Mac OS X 10.5 again. Then run the combo update.

i have not, there ripped from my dvd to my HD so i wouldn't have to keep putting them in.
And i also save my password to ebay in the name so no one would find it.
I have fixed my problem, by reinstalling 10.5 much better ill think twice about ever upgrading my leopard again.
Thanks for the help chaps.

Glad it worked out.
I do believe the major "lesson" learnt is that backups are essential. No matter what OS you run…
Still curious though why your initial reaction was:
IM ACTUALLY CONSIDERING GOING TO VISTA.

It obviously would have brought back his Mac's HDD and all the .avi files. ;)

You always have the option to install 10.5 again and save the old system.
That way will all other files not be deleted and the old system stored with all its file.
Then do the Combo-upgrade to 10.5.2.
Btw, I'm glad it worked out for you.

Probably because he thought a whooooole bunch of us would immediately shout Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! and desperately dive in and bend over backwards to help him.
...when in fact, the initial reaction most of us had was "BYE! Good luck with Vista! See ya in a week!"

Hmmm, strange now you mention it but I have a load of missing avi files since the 10.5.2 upgrade.
I wouldn't have noticed had I not gone looking after you mentioned it but I'm missing a large folder of TV Series.
I'm not too worried as they're backed up on my iMac but still.....

I don't get it... what was the actual cause of the problem?
I really cant lose all my files they are so important documents.
Which you would promptly do by installing Vista.

Haha Exactly,
I will never in my life go to vista.
EVER!!
XP is the only os i will stretch to, and for that to happen my mac should blow up, and steve jobs will disband Apple.
I've reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5 and is running much smoother, i am now backing up my first Time Machine back up ever as i type, and ill then try to install 10.5.2.
Should i go straight to 10.5.2 or Step up to 10.5.1 and then 10.5.2?
Thoughts?
And the cause of the problem was, 10.5.2 being F'd up when i upgraded it.

Did you even try reapplying the combo update, could've saved you a lot of time and effort. Anyway just use the combo update linked in the second post.

Do the Combo Update, but before you update AT ALL, do a permissions repair. then, just to be doubly sure, repeat the permission repair after the update.

Heh, heh, I'd love to try that solution myself, but since installing 10.5.2 kills my Finder, I have no way to get to the update to apply it a second time. My machine functions normally after 10.5.2, except that the Finder only partially loads: no Finder menu bar - I have to open an app to get a menu bar - and the Finder icon in the dock displays the grey "application not responding" message. No icons on the desktop: hard drives and folders are all absent. I can open my apps from the dock and run them normally. I can search in Spotlight, but nothing opens when I click on it. So there's no way for me to apply the combo update again, because when I download it, it doesn't show up on the desktop, and clicking "open" in the download window merely creates a folder with the install package on my desktop that I can't see. After 2 days of mucking around with it, I'm finally back at 10.5.1. Nice job Apple.

This is what happens when A big company like Apple uses all its main developers on... say ... an iPhone maybe?... Apple need to focus on whats important here a $129.00 OS that has too many bugs to write.
And this is weird : Mac OS X 10.5.2 seem to have a different error/bug on each different mac.
Maybe it has more bugs on a Mac that has been upgraded again and again say a G4 from panther to leopard then a New iMac that has built on the basis of Leopard.

That's funny! Because it was indeed my first reaction. There seem to be a lot of these "I'm switching.... here's why, signed Joe Troll" threads lately.
I am glad he found a solution though.
BACK UP everyone!
