Start-up programs (?)

Is there anyway i can get programs to open when start-up my Mac, but run in the back ground instead of the window popping up?

Mail and iCal open when i login, but it annoys me when the windows pop-up.

You can hide them via SystemPreferences ...accounts... login items ... and then you can mark "hide it".

Its not working for some reason.

Mail still pops up when i start up my Mac 😱 Anyone know why?
