I honestly prefer Viva la Vida, because it doesn't have that "whinny" sound that their other albums have. I really prefer Chris Martin without his falsetto.

I so wanted to see them when they were at DTE Music Theatre last month. But I had prior obligations, unfortunately.

I saw Coldplay June 4th when they were in town, and I was less than impressed. Coldplay is my favorite band, but for some reason they just sucked. I think they're one of the bands that sounds better in a recording studio than in concert. :(

Maybe they had an off night because they were amazing a week later.

I don't.
Don't care for the new coldplay either. A bunch of schlocky crap if you ask me.

You must have caught them on a bad night - I saw them in October and they were astounding. Totally blew me away. I'm very tempted to see them again, but tickets are $100+ and I've already seen them on this tour... a little tough to justify, you know?

Maybe it's just me, but for some reason the vocals were too whiney-ish if that makes sense.

Coldplay?
I was watching the music video of Coldplay, The Scientist...the one where Chris Martin is walking backwards and singing. I am so curiosed on how they did that special effect. Can someone tell me how they do that? Thanks.
They film it forwards (obviously), but play the song backwards while filming, so he has to move his mouth in some way that sounds like his lyrics reversed. That way when they go and play the film back in reverse his mouth moves correctly for the song going forwards.
I'd imagine it's pretty tough to do, lots of practicing it between takes.
This is also the same basic principle behind the "slowed down shot" with the song playing at normal speed—they overcrank the camera and play the song correspondingly faster, so that when that shot is slowed down the band is playing at the correct speed.
FWIW, I still think the "A Rush of Blood to the Head" and "Amsterdam" 1-2 combo at the end of this record is the best part of their career so far (though I did enjoy Viva la Vida).

It took Chris Martin a month to learn the song backwards for the video. One of my favorites from their earlier albums.

I really just have to chime in hear to say that Coldplay is amazing live. I caught them during the X&Y tour (my least favorite album) and they still managed to knock my socks off. Chris Martin has an enthusiasm for life that comes through in live music that you can't deny. The Scientist is a great song on arguably their best album.

I loved them before they released their first album but I think it has been downhill ever since. They are still a great band though...;)

Clocks is good, but a bit overrated. I prefer the Scientist, I feel its lyrics have more meaning.
"That's just about girls. It's weird that whatever else is on your mind, whether it's the downfall of global economics or terrible environmental troubles, the thing that always gets you most is when you fancy someone." - Chris Martin

old thread..
but i prefer the first coldplay album. It is my favorite, and almost every song on it is great. Parachutes just had that great sound, a lot of melodies, and great piano.
One of the few albums i can listen to the whole thing and not skip a track, just like TEB's debut album.

This is what I love about music. Everyone has different taste. I personally think that Parachutes is Coldplay's weakest album. I like Yellow, but I really don't like the rest of the album. I personally like Viva La Vida. I can listen to that album over and over and over, and not get tired of it.

Parachutes is a far superior recording, A Rush of Blood to the Head is only on the map because of "Clocks".

They have some OK stuff, really never saw what the big deal was about Coldplay - I guess their support is a sign of times, there just aren't really that many great bands around right now, so people people settle for decent quality boredom.
Even their gigs are boring - saw them at the BA and I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it else I'd be pretty miffed.

ofcourse this is all subjective. What you like might be garbage to many people.
Right now, the bands that i listen to a lot are the DMB album, The Decemberists (maybe i am biast since I am in Portland), Death Cab For Cutie.. Hopefully the new TEB album will be like the first one, although i appreciate all of their efforts. I dislike the newest Coldplay album the most. I can understand and appreciate their newest efforts to expand their libfrary and branch off, but it just doesn't the same (which obviously is working for them and their bank accounts).

most of their songs are fairly easy to learn if you're an amateur guitar player. Yellow and Viva La Vida where among the first songs I learned to play.
Great Band

I first heard this song at the end of the movie Wicker Park, and seriously knocked me back. It went well with the final scene. A great song, my favorite from them. It really made that movie one of my favorites as well because of that final scene.
I wish I had seen them the last time they were in the area but I didn't have the money :(
