View Full Version : Someone spilled coke on my MBA today

I showed no emotion and people were asking me why lol. I really had it bottled up. The guy smacked his soft drink with his hand and it spilled onto my closed MBA. Thankfully it only made a puddle on top (like 30% of the surface of the top) of the MBA near the apple logo. Couple drops spilled off to the front right of the MBA, so just along the edges did the coke touch. Nothing inside on the screen, keys, or trackpad.
I went straight to the closest bathroom and found this foam soap and paper towel. I wanted to get any remnants of the coke off, so it wouldn't get sticky or do something to the aluminum.

Wow that is an amazing stroke of luck that it didn't get inside the machine and destroy it. Very very lucky man. I dont know how I would have reacted... Was the guy sympathetic?

He had a very nervous face and immediately was using his clothing to clean it off lol. I just had a blank stare lol.

Thank God it was closed! and also that the whole drink didn't spill on it.

It's working normally. It only touched the aluminum outside and like 2cm of the aluminum to the right of the trackpad. Aluminum looks great after using the foam soap. No residues or dullness from the coke.

If it had gotten into the machinery, the topic's title would have been "Beat someone to death with an $1800 paperweight today."

I use to have anger problems, so I stayed calm. My face showed it all though. It creeps people out when I have that face lol (one person said are you going to say something? lol). It's the serial killer kill you in your sleep face bottled up anger lol.

If that happened to me I would not take my eyes of it...just stare.

My reaction would've probably been...

*look at it for a second or two*
*eyes slowly start narrowing while slowly moving to look at the dude*
*stare at him for like 5 seconds*
(People normally get the idea at this point and start running to get something to fix the problem)
*help clean it up*
*laugh and ask him if he wanted another coke*

LMFAO :)

If you consider it the MBA is one of the best Apple Notebooks to take a spill. So few ports and very UFO like as far as seams.

Did you have apple care for your mba ? If you didn't and it spilled everywhere and your mba didn't work what would happen.Would apple still replace it.???

Applecare doesn't cover incidents like this. You'd have to get it fixed yourself.

You guys are so freakin ridiculous. Some coke spilled on top of a closed laptop and you act like a dingo almost ate your baby. What's even more funnier than the OP are the ones who are posting to console the OP. I might understand if it spilled on the keyboard.

Well Coke is disgusting when it gets on something and it was a close call. Could have easily gotten in if it wasn't handled correctly and fast.

Three words to live by:

BOTTLES WITH CAPS

Keep all unsecured liquids away from your electronics. Better to be overprotective than to see an expensive piece of tech turned into a paperweight because you or someone else was careless.

This thread made me think about a Youtube video I saw where someone poured water all over their mbp keyboard and supposedly it didn't damage it. Is that possible? At first I thought no way but I do remember my PC keyboard being fairly waterproof as it was pretty much sealed except for raised holes under each key.

Then you would grab a sledge hammer and be about to kill the dude. Suddenly, you realise that you really shouldn't kill this guy, or put him in the hospital. You should sue him $1.50 bucks more than your MBA's price and buy him a coke on the way towards your nearest Apple Store. No hard feelings. Just $1801.50

Um, don't use it next to an open drink? ;)

Honestly if this happened to me I don't know what I'd do. I've never spilt anything on or dropped my laptops. I guess if it still works ok, don't worry about it? But man that sucks, you could always sell it on ebay and buy another one.

While we're on the subject of bottling up your emotions... when I got my iPhone stolen I was in school and I just kind of stated "hey... my phone just got stolen." Everyone around me just kind of stared and it all got really quiet... and then someone was all like "What are you gonna do?" They all looked like they thought I was going to either cry or beat someone up. But no... That wouldn't have been the right attitude.

It really pissed me off.... but what could I do? I reported it to the police, Apple, and the school, and cancelled my service, as well as having my phone already being pass code protected. At least they couldn't use it.

Just always try to keep a good attitude.

I had this happen to me on an Iberia flight between Madrid and Chicago. Flight attendant in business class spills red wine on my six-week old Sony TZ. Keyboard became sticky and hard to use and I had to buy a replacement TZ to use while it was being repaired in Japan by Dynamism.

Just got it back after two months away. Thankfully, Dynamism repaired it for free. But I'm still trying to get my claim resolved with Iberia, I have had zero response after three tries via registered mail, express mail and web form.

Moral of the story: close your lappy the minute you see a flight attendant with an open bottle of wine! :o

P.S. Oh and I now use a CooSkin to cover my keyboard, waiting for one for the MBA to be released.

I wouldn't get too worked up about some liquid hitting the lid. My 2 yo son knocked a beer onto my open PB G4 a few days ago. The beverage got all over the trackpad and into the keyboard (from caps lock to F and down to the spacebar). Sopped up as much of it as I could, but the trackpad was totally unresponsive. So, I turned it upside down over a towel and let it dry out over night. Next day, things are back to normal, except there's a slight clicking noise (sounds like stickiness) when I use the trackpad button.

These things are surprisingly well built. While open and running, it's slipped off a bathroom counter onto a tile floor, and off a coffee table about three times. It split the case open about 1/4" at the front left corner, but (no kidding) I used some 3M packaging tape to hold it together for the last four months. The other corner is pretty bent up and the DVD drive doesn't work, but I've been able to transfer files with bluetooth and a flash drive, and do backups in target disk mode.

If only they'd come out with the new MBPs, I'd let this baby slip into the retirement it so richly deserves.

Wow, just Friday the guy next to me in college had an open bottle of iced tea next to my MBA. I asked him to close the bottle and keep it on the other side.

He gave me a strange look, I know I was obnoxious and weird, but my MBA's worth it, innit :-P

Nope, as said by others, AppleCare does not cover accidental damage. Check your homeowner's insurance- they may bail you out on instances such as these.

I usually do all my studying with my friend at Barnes & Noble, and after reading this blog, I found myself keeping my drink on a chair instead of on the table anywhere near my MBA. I also get all tense now when someone walks next to me with a drink.

Is the MBA thin enough to whip it towards him and slit his throat?

It's not an advertising slogan Apple would want to use, but it would still make the MBA sound pretty bad-ass for such a "soft" machine.

What's even 'more funnier' is your lack of command of the English language.

If it had gotten into the machinery, the topic's title would have been "Beat someone to death with an $1800 paperweight today."

The MacBook Air is completely unsuitable for beating someone to death. However, it would be time for an experiment whether it is thin enough to cut someone's throat...

A ThinkPad would be my recommendation -- if you're strong enough to swing it. :)
