Linkin Park band member Mike Shinoda posted yesterday (http://www.mikeshinoda.com/blog/Linkin_Park/echo_award) (via AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/02/19/apple_taps_linkin_park_to_perform_at_secret_nyc_event.html)) that the band would be participating in "a special show that we’re doing in NYC in conjunction with apple."
Apple has been rumored to be planning a press event to take place within the next week or so (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/07/apple-event-in-last-week-of-february/) that will likely focus on the iPhone and iPod Touch's SDK. \
Apple often invites performers to play at its launch events, however Shinoda does not give much information as to what the event entails so there is a possibility that the booking may be totally unrelated to the rumored press event.

man they suck. i dont understand how anyone can like the band. You need to have absolutely no sense of musical taste or history or theory to actually sit down, listen to that dribble and say "hey, this is actually good". I have never been able to decide who actually sucks more....Linkin Park or Smashmouth.

I know, you rumor sites live from that info, but...
Did anyone on this side not see the obvious?
It will be a special iTunes-exclusive concert (same as AOL Sessions once was), maybe even an Unplugged concert (since MTV sucks so bad lately, at least over here in Germany). Nothing more, nothing less.

Certainly wouldn't expect Apple to cater to me, as they're understandably into mass appeal. Not sure some Aphex Twin acid would go down well at one of these events :)

Last time I listened to Linkin Park my ears started bleeding. Actually I shouldn't hate on them too much, I saw them in concert back in high school. Granted that was 6 years ago and my musical taste has changed drastically.
As I always say though, there is a reason we don't share ears. Maybe Steve can get John Mayer to join them and it will be best worse Apple musical event in history.

There goes Apple's indie credibility. To people wondering why this is such a shock, and how people must just hate "popular" bands (Linkin Park is not that popular), you must first consider these two things:
1) You have no taste in music. Not good or bad taste, just no taste if you think that's why people don't like this group, or any group for that matter.
2) Apple has used Feist and Yael Naim in advertising campaigns, as well as awesome indie bands at SoHo Apple Store concerts, like Annuals. You probably have never heard of any of these artists, but that doesn't mean they're less suitable for something like this.

Wow, why so much hate. Music is the most subjective thing ever. Not so sure about composition, but how good one band sounds is entirely personal. And I hate the way people use music and bands to define themselves as this or that, most just come off as snobs, whether indie rock or rap. Define yourself sure, but not as better than someone else because of their favs.

Bottom line: Musical taste is subjective, and in terms of popularity, talent is arbitrary.
Some people like screaming and simple power chord progressions; some don't. Is there really need to argue about it? LP is an A list band. They sell out shows, so maybe Apple is simply trying to appeal to different audiences.
P.S. Regardless of ones interest in LP. This rumor is a good sign and certainly more credible than the, "I know a guy who knows a guy" rumors we've been dealing with since MWSF 2008. (That said, I still believe Tailpipe).

More on topic though, for some reason I can picture them performing around the time they have an official show in NYC, but next week some time between Tuesday and Friday would be more realistic. Gah, who knows. Hopefully there will be more info about the "event" soon.

Here's what I listen to, so you can hate me back. If you're a fan of Linkin Park, my bet is you don't know more than 5 of the top 50 artists I listen to (proving that I'm a mindless hipster wannabe wanting to fit in with the cool crowd, and that LP fans don't know much about music).

That's pretty gay hiring a west coast band to perform in NYC.
Yeah, I'm sure they were taking into account the band's hometown when putting this together.
How dare they insult NYC like that. It's about time people in the rest of the world started treating New York with the respect the locals give it - in other words, acting like it's the greatest place on the planet.

dear god, worst band ever. Apple....you suck. Not that I care, I'm not going...but anything that links the worst band ever with the best company ever....makes for one crappy combination.
man they suck. i dont understand how anyone can like the band. You need to have absolutely no sense of musical taste or history or theory to actually sit down, listen to that dribble and say "hey, this is actually good". I have never been able to decide who actually sucks more....Linkin Park or Smashmouth.
Yep, it's just amazing to see people liking those losers or any other nu-metal wannabe...I still remember when Korn said they were like the new heavy metal or the successors of Iron Maiden...these guys should just get back to the garage and listen to real rock instead of being such a ridiculous display of how low modern US metal has gone...not to mention Metallica and their painted nails, of course...

Aside from an onslaught of ellipses, this is pretty much it. ****** "Nü-Metal" -- that's right, with the umlaut. God. I'm not a huge metal fan, but even I can see it: They took one of the most badass genres of rock and turned it into "guys my girlfriend left me!!!! hlp plz". Basically what Green Day, Good Charlotte and Blink-182 did to punk. They intentionally made it commercial so that the lowest common denominator would buy the album.
This really has nothing to do with snobbery. It indeed has more to do with knowing what the frick about music. And don't give me that "but it sounds good!" BS. That's how the Nazis took over Germany!

This is why people can't read the forums, cuz a bunch a so called "experts" on everything know what is best for everyone. Linkin Park sucks, the MacBook Air sucks, the 2g Shuffle sucks, and on and on.
Give it a rest already, who cares who performs. It not something anybody is forced to watch. Just be happy Apple is working with a major band, instead of throwing Randy Newman out there. They don't have to have any artist and people would still be interested. But even with that said, I don't listen to Randy Newman, but I could care less that he performed. Good for him.
Get excited when its a band or artist you like, get over it if it isn't. Enough said.

The timing and location just doesn't sound right. MiraMobile, which was the basis to the original rumor, is based in Oregon, and while Apple uses them in San Fran, why would Apple truck them, literally, all the way out to NYC when there's no doubt mobile production companies in NYC they can use. I know that when Apple still had MacWorld in NYC, they used a company called Masque Sound based in New York, so why wouldn't they do the same for video?

Not really. Wind is certainly not music, it has no sense of human expression or emotion. Would you really put Linkin Park in the same ballpark as Mozart or Bach? It has nothing to do with a timeline, there are plenty of bands in the past fifty years that I personally would, but of course that's my personal taste as well.
But I think we can all come to that conclusion about Linkin Park. And that is why they are terrible.

Appreciation of music is subjective, but history of music is a science.
And your point is?
Some of the greatest musicians (e.g. SLASH) still have to admit, they can't read notes, therefore won't follow scientific rules.
Music may have some scientific phenomena to be discovered (like harmony), yet still the best music is improvised.
And Nu Metal is part of the music history, though dead now. Just like Grunge was in the 90s. Or Hard Rock in the 80s.
My point is: I liked Hybrid Theory, I adored ReAnimation (as it was much more industrialesque, which I liked) and since then...well Linkin Park innovated contrary to my style of music. So be it. My taste, their decision.
And back on topic: Maybe they should've chosen Nine Inch Nails, as Trent seems to be a very dedicated Apple user - those Garage Band tracks for remixing were a real cool marketing ploy!
Finally (just like posted some hours ago by me and another user): It will be a bloody session they record for iTunes. He is talking about a show in conjunction with Apple. Ever heard a show consisting of one or two songs?
Peace

While I'm a huge fan of TMV and not so much of Linkin Park, I think TMV would be an even worse choice than LP for an Apple event. Their live shows certainly are "different" and I doubt many people would be too big of a fan of 10-15min long solos they usually have during their liveset.

I gotta say that I do personally like Linkin Park, some of their music is amazing, but I will agree they're musical talent isn't exactly up their with the greats. I just find them fun to listen to when I'm in the mood, you know?
And secondly, Linkin Park has been in with Apple for a long time now. Their DJ, Mr Hahn has used Macbook Pros exclusively for triggering samples, loops, Vinyl controllers etc etc. ever since I can remember, and every song they've ever recorded has been on a Mac, when either in the studio or at each member's "home studio" (Mike has pointed this out on numerous occasions)
And yes, I realise I know WAAAY too much about Linkin Park, haha. I just digg their sound & am a studio engineer so I have to research into these things :)

which is ironic considering the main points raised on this thread are whether people like the band (!!!!!!!?????) and not what event could it be and why would they have that style of band for it.
I always read these threads hoping they stay on topic but they never do.
main questions it may raise I think are - what date could it be if they're performing at it?
and
what products would they have any possible relevance to that could be announced?
likelihood of apple announcing a linkin park mac mini/macbook pro special edition? - please can someone create a mock up of this, that would be funny.

I've been an active reader of this site for over and year and half, and I've noticed that nobody ever seems happy about anything, theres always a negative aspect it seems. Apple isn't forcing you to listen to a Linkin Park CD, or forcing you to buy anything from Linkin park. They got a band to perform at an event, thats it. If the event is streaming on Apple.com the next day, don't watch the performance.

Yes this confirms an apple event will take place sometime around Linkin Park's concert at Madison Square Garden.
Here's why I'm excited. I can't imagine Apple would hold an event complete with a musical performance simply to announce the intangible iphone SDK. I bet they're going to announce the 3g GPS iphone 2. They have to announce it six months ahead of shipping to get FCC approval, so announcing it now will get it out by July, like iphone 1.
Also, Garmin recently announced their GPS phone coming out 3rd Quarter 2008. Apple needs to stay competitive, and it would be in their best interest to beat it to the market, and top it (but that part's only natural ;) )
What do you think?

Also, Garmin recently announced their GPS phone coming out 3rd Quarter 2008. Apple needs to stay competitive, and it would be in their best interest to beat it to the market, and top it (but that part's only natural ;) )
What do you think?
Sounds cool but... Maybe some love for Canada too?....

Considering that apple appears to be missing an entire CPU generation (Penryn) on the MBP due to distractions such as apple tv, perhaps the choice of band is a fitting celebration of missed opportunities.

I think Linkin Park sucks (I've always associated them with your average 7th grade younger brother's music taste) but they certainly sell quite a few albums and are one of the biggest bands in the world. I don't know how big Nick Cave is in the UK, but I imagine he's much bigger there than he is here.
Just because you or I would prefer to see the Flaming Lips or Wilco doesn't mean that it would make as big a splash or have as big an impact, so I understand their choice. Who knows? Maybe they'll debut new Macbook Pros there as well.

How could someone possibly vote negative for this? This is great news. Apple will be introducing/announcing something...how could that possibly be negative? Are people voting negative for the sake of voting negative? Or are people who "hate" Apple on this board and voting negative? I don't get it.
No, you don't.
Possible reasons maybe:
- Crap band
- people don't believe the rumour
- they aren't interested in iPhone SDK
- they think the voting system is a complete and total waste of time ( and vote negative )
Doesn't mean they are 'Apple haters'.

And for that matter, if you're so cool, how come everyone knows who Linkin Park is, but no clue who you are???

Okay, so far we've seen these arguments in defense of Linkin Park:
1) How many records have YOU sold?
2) They're better than ****** pop bands.
3) They write their own stuff.
4) If you don't like them you're just trying to be cool.
Seriously people? Is this the best you could come up with? This is why crappy pop-metal, or really any pop-rock crossover bands exist, because of this mentality of defensible mediocrity. Is this all you require of the music that shapes and defines our culture? Selling records? Being better than the lowest rung on the ladder? Writing their own songs?!
And reason number four is just insulting everyone's intelligence.
Edit: People care so much about this because Apple's niche market is represented by the music and art it portrays to the rest of the media. Traditionally, Apple has invited indie and/or well-respected bands, typically ones that those hip folks in their twenties are paying close attention to. Apple plays to trendsetters, because Apple IS a trendsetter. In this case, Apple is playing to the lowest common denominator, and we are all fearful of Apple becoming just that.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but Linkin Park wrote this song called
"Numb", and Jay-Z did a remix of it. So maybe at this event, Linkin Park and Jay-Z will be there to perform it. The reason I mention Jay-Z is because wasn't there a rumor that Jay-Z was going to launch a record label with Apple? This could be the event where this might happen. What do you guys think?

New Ipods without audio functionality.
That would be the only just collaboration between Apple and Mike 'every song has exactly the same melody/harmony including the ones I produce for other artists like Lupe Fiasco' Shinoda.
It would be crazy if we could get a few scratches over the chorus!!!

Either your typing needs some work or you aren't making sense. I never said that you couldn't like a band because you weren't famous. My point was that people are acting like they "know" music so well and feel the need to define (or lack thereof) why the band sucks.
So it's false logic to say someone doesn't know what they're talking about when they aren't in a famous band themselves, produced no music, isn't in the music industry and isn't a music critic for a living?? I guess by YOUR logic, everyone is an expert on everything then.
Since I'm guessing you are the expert on 'cool', what exactly is the definition??

Well I didn't mean literally, though you by all means have the right to point that out. I meant that history is typically supported by facts and concrete evidence, conjecture, and all that. In that regard, it is much more like science than art.
My point was that we can argue all day whether or not a band has a good sound to us, but something we can't really argue (though on forums any argument is possible I suppose) is the history of music. If you are a popular music nerd like I am, you'll understand what I mean when I say Linkin Park sucks.
Please just remember music nerd =/= music snob.
For example, almost everyone loves Zep. I don't really care for them that much, mostly because I don't really dig arena rock for obvious reasons, but at the same time, they certainly don't suck. I reserve the word "suck" for a very specific instance, and that is usually Linkin Park and Dave Matthews Band. When you look at popular music from an analytical approach, there is certainly an objective means for deciding what "sucks."

Atleast some people on this board have some sense.
Linkin Park is a roller-coaster, Linkin Park is a roller-coaster, Linkin Park is a roller-coaster...
Because like a roller coaster, Linkin Park may seem dangerous or appear rebellious while in fact it’s perfectly safe for family fun, the danger is an illusion, and they’ve been duped by marketing hype.
Who's looking for danger? This is music.

This is why some people care:
... talent is arbitrary.
People care because we, as the human race, have a vested cultural interest in making sure that we have only people with talent performing music. Talent can be developed, those without it are simply not interested in developing it (or too lazy).
You know, just because you don't give a flying bleep about a band does not mean that no one else has the right to. Popular music, like government, is something we all own, and must take responsibility for. We elect popular artists like we elect officials.
If you don't understand what I'm talking about, great, who cares. But don't just say stupid crap like people don't have the right to mention anything bad about your favorite band or whatever. It's like saying people can't attack Bush. That gets you labeled as a "fascist," why shouldn't what you people are saying?

1) Government is not here to "run our lives" go read the constitution.
2) Music DOES run some people's lives. For some, their entire life revolves around music. It really doesn't matter to you, and that's fine. Think of it how some people here have their lives revolve around Apple. We think it's pretty geeky, but to them it's an entire lifestyle.
3) The fact that you see it as an "entertainment business" punctuates what is wrong with Linkin Park and all the other "entertainers." Musicians do not (or should not I suppose) exists solely to entertain people.
I think you watch a little too much MTV dude. It's fine, we probably all do. I hate to sound like one of those FREE YOUR MIND DUDE people, but like I said it's not about "entertainment." There used to be a degree of artistic integrity within popular music.

I'm a little annoyed that Apple would want to give money to those dopes to hear them play, but whatever. If Apple associated with the music-snob type bands I like then 10 people would show up with their arms folded and quietly nod their heads. Sweet.
Also a bit let down that there is a Zune commercial with the Shins and an HP add with Flaming Lips. It's only slightly more fun to love a band than it is to hate on some other band.

Also a bit let down that there is a Zune commercial with the Shins and an HP add with Flaming Lips. It's only slightly more fun to love a band than it is to hate on some other band.
I need to get out more. I have not even heard of Linkin Park. Then again, I am over 45.

Other than the fact that Linkin Park is an affront to people with good musical taste, they simply are the wrong marketing message for apple. That's what's wrong with Linkin Park.
Apple's whole point is being innovative, creative, hip, and useful. Everything that Linkin Park is not. The world would not be a worse place if Linkin Park did not exist.

Good point; you may also add modern Metallica and Korn (with that stupidly arrogant four-eyed member) to the equation. I am happy to see that, apart from some PC lovers in this forum, there are still people with some sense of taste in music.
Linkin Park and any other nu-metal band (notably those coming from the US) suck, period. Anyone who disagrees with this simple fact should be suspended from this forum.

1) Government is not here to "run our lives" go read the constitution.
I didn't mean literally run our lives... but there is truth to that statement, but that's for another debate.
2) Music DOES run some people's lives. For some, their entire life revolves around music. It really doesn't matter to you, and that's fine. Think of it how some people here have their lives revolve around Apple. We think it's pretty geeky, but to them it's an entire lifestyle.
Yea, fanatics, which brings me back to my point. It's not worth getting all worked up about it. We don't work for Apple, we don't work for "whatever band" we are just fans. But even with Mac vs PC, we have things to back us up, with music it's just art.
3) The fact that you see it as an "entertainment business" punctuates what is wrong with Linkin Park and all the other "entertainers." Musicians do not (or should not I suppose) exists solely to entertain people.
What's your point here? If they aren't there to entertain people, I dont' know what they are doing. It's their life, it's a business, unless they purely devote their music making for music sake and their peers, I don't see how pop musicians aren't just there to entertain. I don't know how this got to this point, but I'm just trying to say people take their fanaticism to seriously.
I think you watch a little too much MTV dude. It's fine, we probably all do. I hate to sound like one of those FREE YOUR MIND DUDE people, but like I said it's not about "entertainment." There used to be a degree of artistic integrity within popular music.
Actually I don't watch any MTV, I stopped watching years ago. Again the degree of artistic integrity in pop music is subjective, to think of pop music as anything other than an entertainment business, is totally delusional.

Where are the moderators to sift through this crap? Linkin Park being a good bad or a crap one, petty arguments of government and the media. I hope you're right but has Apple ever made an announcement on a day other than Tuesday? Granted Leopard did come out on a Friday but we knew that ahead of time. I'm about at my rope's end waiting on a new MBP. It has just become ridiculous with the delay.

I'm sure they have made announcements on other days. It makes sense.... a big band that happens to be in NYC who happens to be participating with Apple in NYC when Apple has something big expected due in late Feb.

Whether or not YOU like Linkin Park is really immaterial. As with the iPod ads, the music and artist are chosen to attract certain people. And that's probably not you. You're already here, aren't you. And it's probably not Steve Jobs' bag either. But it will work. And that's all that matters.
That's not entirely true. Your repeat customers are a key source of revenue. It's almost the same as automotive purchases. Let's say you bought a BMW. BMW spends an awful lot of money making sure you are happy with all the status and connotation that goes with buying a BMW (aside from actually making a good product of course) so when the time comes to rebuy, you don't defect to Lexus or Mercedes, etc. Is it not the same with Apple?
Sure, they have me hooked with OSX. I'm certainly never switching to Vista. But if Linkin Park is associated with itunes and, say, Radiohead is associated with Amazon's mp3 store, don't you think that matters to a lot of people?

However, the Macbook Air was released on a Friday. So, there is a small small small chance that we will see the Event then. The problem is, though, that we already knew about Leopard and the Macbook Air before the release.

Okay, listen. I'm sick of this being even a discussion.
Linkin Park, Staind, Puddle of Mudd, and whatever other crappy nü-metalband that intentionally misspells their awful name, sucks. In fact, that entire genre is a pox upon most people's ears.
I know that's just one man's opinion, but one good way to tell whether or not there is a consensus on a band's suckage is whether or not people outside the genre like them. Nobody who doesn't like Nü-metal likes Linkin Park. Plenty of people who don't like indie rock, for example, like bands like Radiohead and Band of Horses. Plenty of people who don't like punk rock like the Clash. And plenty of people who don't like R&B/Pop like Gnarls Barkley. I am not personally promoting these groups but instead looking at them objectively.
Linkin Park and the rest of the genre are not respected among other musicians, music press, or people who don't listen to the genre. This is key. NOT RESPECTED. Nobody but their fans really think they are cool or compelling enough to be in a commercial.
Apple likes to use bands that there is a buzz around. Simply because your ear is not tuned to music industry buzz does not mean this band is not important. People like the next big thing, which is why it was a perfect moment for Feist, for example. When you have the next big thing in your commercial, people who pay attention to this sort of thing have their ears perked and their attention piqued, and will probably the respect the brand a little bit more for paying attention to what's going on in music.
Another advantage is attaching the music to a product before the song is mainstream. Then, when the artist suddenly becomes popular, people attach their single mentally to an Apple product.
Linkin Park is not new or catchy or respected. Apple artists are usually all three and always at least two.
If you happen to like Linkin Park, sorry I said they suck, yes that was my personal opinion. But look closely, there is probably some truth to what I said, try to be objective about it. I'm 21 and I can realize when a band I like sucks, hopefully you can do the same.

Well, I am 20 years(21 soon) and I love Linkin Park. I think they are a great Rock band, with catchy music. I like to workout to Linkin Park.
I am surprised that you are saying that, none but their fans find them compelling enough to be in a commercial.
I think exactly the opposite. Linkin Parks music is used in a great deal of videos in about everything... AMV, music videos... Linkin Parks music is very mainstream in my opinion, and it goes well with many things. It's mainstream collaboration of rock, pop, electronic, and hiphop all mashed into one.
I think this is the "center" of Linkin Park.
But then again, I honestly don't hate alot of music. I have my preferences, but most stuff that I hear I can tolerate just fine. And if I didn't, I wouldn't make long posts on the internet about why I didn't like them. Peace.

Ergo, Apple should keep you (specifically, you) happy, and not use Linkin Park, because YOU don't like them. And, since you get "pretty emotional about" music, that also means your opinion is far more worthy or important. Again, therefore Apple should satisfy you rather than anyone else who might actually like Linkin Park, because clearly they are WRONG and you are RIGHT rather than it being a difference of taste.

I was being pretty objective about it; conceding that perhaps I have liked terrible bands (and I might even still like some). I did not say anything about my taste being better, or my bands being great.

Just as you were objective? Sorry, but bagging something out that someone enjoys does not escape a reply just because you dismissively suffix it with "try to be objective" (implying that anyone who disagrees with you and likes what you hate is not being objective). Particularly when it's dripping with superciliousness, urging others to "look closely"; that clearly they missed something that your superior intellect caught. You do not get to be the arbiter of taste, no matter how refined you think yours is, regardless of what subtleties you may have picked up that others have not. Look closely at yourself instead.
Think abstractly for a moment. I welcome an intelligent, rational debate; but I really don't think you seem to want to do this. I think your ego is in the way.
Pseudo-intellectualistic snobbery bores me. Your personal music taste is unimportant in Apple's marketing, is no more valid than anyone else's, and your attitute towards tastes that differs from yours demonstrates intolerance. End of story.

Actually, being a twenty-something white male who lives in New York City and listens to indie and electronic music makes me exactly what Apple panders to; or at least tries to associate with. You don't even know what you're talking about.
Do you ever see Justin Long with spiky gelled hair, UFO pants and fly sunglasses? Sorry man, Nü-Metal is not counter-culture (read: "cool") enough for Apple to give a ****.
