I was a club DJ for over 7 years (1983-1991) and this was a "must play" every night. It is definitely one of the timeless classics from the 80s.

The first time I heard this song on a dancefloor was one of those truly life-altering moments: sophomore year of high school (1986) at a dance at some other high school. I think I had heard the song on the radio a few years prior and had mostly forgotten about it since I was more into Def Leppard and Iron Maiden for a while there, but that moment on the dancefloor I felt two things: like the beat was pre-programmed into my DNA, and like I was looking twenty years into the future. Twenty one years later, it's still a huge milestone.
Earlier at that dance, I met a girl who ended up being my first "real" girlfriend, but after dancing to Blue Monday I knew she was already obsolete (her favorite band was Billy Squier!).

This song was a defining one for me in high school. It definitely brings back a lot of memories.

Too bad the club (called: "The Club") where I dj'd wouldn't get in to this great song. Although we went a few years with an alternative night on Fridays after I worked there. Us different ones had a great time. :D
"The Club" finally rotted and fell into the river a few years ago.

Good song on its own, but the '95 Hardfloor remix is one great masterpiece. Not too different from the original song's structure, but improved in almost every possible manner.

I broke up with my first "real" girlfriend with this playing in the background on Live 105 in San Francisco. That was really a great summer (and I still miss having a great radio station).

This one brings back a lot of memories of high school for me too.
I owned this single (and the whole album also) and it had the coolest album art. I still mention it as one of my favorites. It looked like a giant..
Wait for it...
Floppy disk. As in the actual floppy ones (5 1/4 or whatever they were called). It had like a rainbow band around it...the inside liner was black plastic like the guts of a floppy.
Wish I still had it. It got lost during one of my moves.

I always love some New Order. Blue Monday is a great song, but they have so much other great stuff too. If you like Blue Monday I definitely recommend digging deeper into the New Order catalog.

Yeah, it's one of the more iconic sleeves for sure. Supposedly the sleeves cost so much to product that Factory Records actually lost money on every copy sold. And Blue Monday was the best-selling 12" single of all time.
Peter Saville's artwork for New Order was another one of the key things that drew me in to New Order (and Factory as a whole), not to mention some of the non-Factory artists he designed for (OMD, Peter Gabriel, Pulp, &c).

Agreed. "Blue Monday" is not a bad song at all, but others like "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Thieves Like Us" were songs I liked better.
Throw on some of the remixes of these songs and you've got some classic 80's music.

Agreed. I loved some of the OMD covers he did. Nice stuff for sure.

Funny, I just made a similar comment on the Joy Division post. Blue Monday was one of NO's better songs. Still holds well today without sounding to foofy. Can't say the same for OMD -- loved them back in the early-mid 80s but now I think, "man, I use to listen to that?"

I'd rather not, New Order > Rhianna or whatever she's called. Blue Monday all the way!

I used to think "I see a ship in the harbour/I can and shall obey" was "I see a ship in the harbour/Icon and shallow bay".
Sigh.

I always thought the cover by Flunk bested the original. Check it out if you have not heard it. I still sometimes drop this track in its entirety in the middle of club sets, and it is amazing to watch.

I would also add in the more radio friendly Regret and, my personal favourite, True Faith. Both tracks that first alerted me to New Order whilst growing up.

All great songs, adding one more to the above - "1963" - which I just heard the other day on Sirius 1st Wave.

Yeah, New Order's music in general aged a lot better than OMD's, and I really really liked OMD back in the day. I never stopped listening to New Order but took almost a 15-year break from OMD. When Electroclash started getting big a few years ago, I pulled out my old copy of OMD's self-titled first album, pointed at it, and said "Yeah, it sounds like that!". I still spin their first four albums every now and again and they don't sound so bad, or maybe the 12" for "Tesla Girls" for a cheap laugh at how dated it sounds!

IIRC New Order did a lot of good remixes in '95, including, one of my personal faves... 1963

1963, "Vanishing Point" and "Elegia" are probably some of my favorites from New Order. There is something about this group, in general, that never lets me tire of them.
Blue Monday is just a classic that will be around for a long time to come. :)

My cousin got me hooked on New Order back in 87 while I was visiting them in TX after high school. I love Blue Monday. I have not stopped listening to them since. I actually just saw them playing on a concert on one of the Dish HD channels with someone and man, they are getting old ;) It is good to know that some of the older bands can still make good music (Duran Duran is still a favorite).

Yeah.... very very nice tune.... still play it sometimes, and people still go crazy. It's a classsic in the likes of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love"

http://youtube.com/watch?v=og1HAkjOuL0 -- "True Faith" has one of the oddest videos I've ever seen.
I really like Joy Division better, but New Order is a pretty sweet group. I wonder what they would have done if Ian Curtis hadn't killed himself.

I downloaded this a while ago because it was so catchy. But the song, I'm So Beautiful by Divine certainly overtook it fairly quickly. im sorry to say that Divine's is better. New Order - Blue Monday, comes second on my list.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:

I would recommend these songs if you would ask me for a compilation.
Pet shop boys - what have I done to deserve this
Men without hats - Safety dance
Midnight Oil - Beds are burning
Human League - Being boiled
Funky town - Lipps Inc.
and a lot more ...

New Order is great on record, but they suck live, at least when I saw them last in '93.

blue monday's an okay track, but i've always liked True Faith much better. ever since i heard it on "American Psycho", i've been into them. for anyone into new order, the ost for american psycho is a road map for new music.
and for the record...lots of bands suck live. some bands are just better with production values than live and loud.

young creative, maybe you can help me out. i'm trying to find another song that was a 'must play' in the 80s club scene, but i don't know what it's called. it's not by new order. could you list some top songs please?

Hints please. Do you remember any snippets of lyrics? Describe the synth sounds and stuff.

Choon, I prefer the Cosmosis track Re-Order which is a psychedelic take on the song though.
Funky town - Lipps Inc.
I have an awesome Acid Techno remix of that track by Julian Liberator, it's so ridiculous phasing between a massive techno beat and the funky lyrics.
