View Full Version : New MBPs this Thurs, February 21st?
Doktag
Feb 20, 2008, 02:27 AM
Yes, it's another MBP update thread, but hear me out. I believe that another possible day has popped up for a MBP update: this Thursday, the 21th February.
Various signs pointing to this:
- Stock IS running low on the current models. Update must be soon, or they risk losing sales because no one has any to sell!
- Peoples MBP orders being delayed. (http://forums.appleinsider.com/member.php?u=45690)
This guys order was set to ship Feb 13-15. Shipping date then changed to the 20th-22nd.
- The "secret Apple event" Linkin Park will be playing at in NYC. (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/19/linkin-park-to-participate-in-upcoming-new-york-apple-event/)
According to their Tour Dates, they are in NYC doing a concert that Thursday as well. (www.myspace.com/linkinpark, scroll down a bit). Apple event in the day, concert that night? Save them coming back and doing it after leaving NYC.
And finally, a bit of healthy speculation on my behalf:
- Steve Jobs loves surprising people. A THURSDAY announcement would surprise everyone, particularly those followers of the Church of Tuesday :P.

Good theory but I'd guess that the "secret event" would be not-so-secret right now - in order to have a bigger audience, people do have to know what's happening in less than 2 days, right?

Where are the invites?

Feb 20, 2008, 02:41 AM
Maybe the invites were subliminal and people wont know they exist until they are at the event that they were invited to!

Feb 20, 2008, 02:46 AM
As per the original post, I also thought about this.
The tour dates do show that Apple could have this "event" before this weekend. I do have a problem with there not being any sort of invitation or announcement, but if this Linkin Park "event" is happening soon (as opposed to a while from now, which I doubt since they mentioned it) then I would definitely see it happening while they are still in New York. I believe the tour dates show another concert in a different state on Monday. So if its possible even with there not being an announcement yet, I think it COULD happen on or by friday, I doubt they would do it on the weekend.

Sorry guys, but what makes anyone think that the Linkin Park/:apple: gig will have anything to do with the impending MBP update? Sounds to me like some kind of itunes/ipod/isomething related event.
No reason for Apple to break with Tues tradition for our MBP update. Especially not for a minor speed bump and cosmetic upgrade

Or possibly tied somehow to the iPhone SDK release? unlikely though.

Please don't tell me nobody can see the humor in the use of 'hybrid theory'?
Anyway... it would be weird if Apple had 2 events, a music event and a announcement event, in just a few days... so i think either Linkin Park will play on the same event as the announcement, or there will be no announcement (Please no!)

Well, actualy, as far as I know the 26th February event is still just a rumor.
Therefor, maybe the 21th could be the really event... But duno...
What I do know, is that, the stores are out of Mbp, even the refurb store, so a update is most likely imminent. Tomorrow or during this WE. Resellers can not wait until the 26th for a delivery, that would be insane. Some resellers are out of Mbp for about a week now, and wait a intirely new week would be just to much.
It will be strange though if Apple break the Tuesday rule to come out the Mbp update. However it seams that the Mbp update delay is not Apple's fault but is due to a penryn shipment delay which would justify an update "in extremis".
That said, I would be also very surprised if anything happens tomorrow. Not because your "hybrid theory" (I understood the words game) don't stand but, well, it would be strange...duno... plus, it is to obvious at this point and god knows that nothing with Apple is obvious. Not even when the Iphone 16gb came out.

Well, it depends...
A rumor is something that we have heard (from a source) and for what the happenning is unsure.
A speculation is just talk about what might or might not happend whitout having any source in the background.
What we should do in a rumor site is to bring some rumors. But because almost none of us is in contact with a high representator of Apple, all we can do is speculate...
Guess what? Is what we do!

Unfortunately, I am not on a Mac. When the MBP update comes out, it will be my first. As ripplet guessed, I'm on a PC, and actually just recently formatted it (sigh), so I haven't yet installed dictionary for Firefox.
But that's no excuse really. English is my first language, and I'm ashamed of the mistake. I usually pride myself on spelling and grammar. Please accept my apology.
Also, MYRZ - I lol'd at your pun. :)
No invites (or to be more correct, no news about invites) does seem to be the biggest hole in the theory. But we shall see.

One thing is actually very interesting:
Lining park has a concert the 26th in nashville
so the spec. even on that date will most likley not have linkin park (or they're there miday then travel to play nashville at night).
if the event is then.

Screw the invites. Apple can just put LP in the Cube or on the Plaza above the store, or let them play in Soho or at W. 14th and roll out the new MBPs and whatever else they have. They could always SMS everybody with an ATT iPhone an hour before the show. It'll get packed fast. This is New York.

Agreed, but I think people are referring to the lack of press invites. It does Apple no good throwing a concert to a bunch of people who could give two ***** about a iPhone SDK.

well it's 'losing' not 'loosing' and not everyone is out of stock. The Singapore store has lots, I believe Australia does to, I saw more replies saying stores in various countries are still fully stocked.
And Linkin Park? If that's anything it's related to music ..

I think the Apple event will be this Friday. I checked Genius bar reservations at multiple eastern Apple stores and it appears that none of them are taking reservations after 12 PM EST. Perhaps this is to shut down the store for a few hours and update the floor with the new inventory?

None of the Apple Stores around me are taking reservations after 11:00 either. Can anyone confirm whether this is just a normal cut off point for advance reservations or whether this is unusual??
EDIT: There are personal shopping appointments available all day. Looks like its just a cut-off time for advanced genius bar appointments. They will probably change it to include later times as the day goes on.
Edit x2: Its NOTHING. The time changes as the day moves on.

And as far as the stock issue I do not see the MBP making a big impact on the stock price. the MBP will probably see a speed/components increase not a complete design rehaul (if they were then it is in the research from awhile back so they wouldn't have saved it for a failing stock price).
Only radically new products/design would cause a huge impact on the stock price. I don't see a lot of non mac people like us here waiting eagerly for the new possible pro.

I'm just hopeful that the new MBP's will be coming shortly now that the processors will be available...

The Linkin Park relationship to the MBP could be that bands that use a lot of samples and looping tend to use a program like Ableton Live while performing, and more often than not they're running it on an MBP or similar...the MBP really is a musician's best friend.
Not sure I'm sold on the Thursday theory though...I wanna believe! I can't hold onto this tax $ much longer!!!

This whole "special event" thing could be anything. Perhaps its a special "webcast" event. Probably an end to iTunes DRM, lower ipod costs to spur sales? And the inevitable iPhone SDK.
As for the new Macbook Pro. I don't think a special event is really necessary for an update. The new update will be a product refinement, nothing revoluntionary. It will prob get the multi-touch, new penryn and perhaps a new graphics card. Among other small things. It's nothing to spend a ton of $ on a special event. And while i'm a devoute MBP fan, we're not Apples mass market customers. Those are the iPod and iPhone.

Well the main page says 24 hours, BUT if you add a macbook pro to your cart on the apple store, and then pretend to start purchasing it at the bottom of the page, it tells you the expected shipping details, which are sometimes quite long, but currently are "ships Feb. 21-25". I think people are more referring to low in-store stock and the fact that people's order's are being delayed over and over.
I just hope one day they just pop up, somewhat unexpected... like tomorrow... that would be nice!

I think you'll find that Penryn will have little or no problems at all because it will be the last SR processor before the update to the montevina chipset. So it should be a near seamless update (hopefully).
