View Full Version : Activity Monitor won't open.

I started using Activity Monitor very frequently once I found out I could quit the Dock to free up memory taken up by my widgets. I used it so often I put it in my dock. Now (starting a couple of days ago), when I click on Activity Monitor (in the Dock or the Utilities folder) it will not open.
However, I'm expecting a copy of Leopard in the mail in a couple days (I'm currently running Tiger 10.4.11). I'm assuming installing Leopard will get rid of this problem (please correct me if I'm wrong).
What I'd like to know if there was something I did (by using it too much, leaving it open, etc.) to cause Activity Monitor to stop working and what I need to do to prevent it from happening again, or if this was just a one time glitch.
Any feedback would be appreciated!

Have you tried using iStat Pro (http://www.islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=7) instead?

I do have iStat Pro, but I was using Activity Monitor to see specifically how much memory each application was taking up, how much processing power, etc. so that I could end a program that I saw was taking up too many system resources. Is there a way to do this with iStat Pro?

Does anyone have an idea of why it stopped working? Is this something that you've heard of happening before?

Try deleting it's plist file. It's located at:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist

Are you certain that it's not running? The reason I ask is because sometimes I forget that the window is closed in Activity Monitor but the program is still running. If the application bar for AM is still available, then go to window and Activity Monitor or press cmd+1.
If you don't have the arrow or whatever in the dock underneath Activity monitor, then it surely isn't running. It won't open after restart as well, I presume?
Worst case scenario I think would be to trash the Activity Monitor, use Pacifist on your mac os x install disc and see if you can hunt down an installer or binary for it. Alternatively, it should work to copy over any Activity Monitor from any other Tiger machine you might have handy.
