Very similar, but I think its just that drum rhythm that really draws them together.

yeah, they copied it.

"Some consider the riff in this song to be similar to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' "American Girl." In a 2006 interview with Rolling Stone, Tom Petty said "The Strokes took 'American Girl' [for their song "Last Nite"], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, 'OK, good for you.' It doesn't bother me." [1] The band originally did not want to make a music video. When they asked if they could just perform it live and got the ok, they were more than happy to."
