I used to love Mariah's music. Her voice...

Then she had to prove she was hip-hop and skanky. WHY!?

I have her first album and select songs like this one. But after that, it's all pop-hip-hop junk that sells to the 13-year-olds for 2 weeks and then flops.

I wish she would go back to creating beautiful music with that gorgeous voice... *sigh*

wow neonart i could not agree with you more.....

i absolutely LOVED Mariah back when she could sing. Music Box is, quite possibly, my favorite cd of all time. Once she turned hip-hop crap, I stopped listening. And now I can't stand her.

A classsic, no doubt.

I, too, miss the old, ballad Mariah. But if she would rather collaborate with hip hop stars, which I strongly doubt, I'd rather she just do that, then sing something she doesn't want to. I'm a huge fan of Mariah's voice, and it's hard to beat songs like Hero, Looking In, Whenever You Call (feat. Brian McKnight), and even the poppy songs, like Fantasy and Always be my baby.

Her self titled album has grown on me. I used to think it was too late 80's, early 90's sounding, but it is actually quite good. Prisoner is a good, empowering song. Vanishing is one of my all time favorites. I love the end to All In Your Mind. Vision of Love is a classic too.

I really love Mariah's old ballad stuff, but there are a couple songs that stand out on her new albums. Bringin' on the heartbreak is a pretty good song, IMO, but I've heard her sing much better (charmbraclet). Never too Far from the Glitter soundtrack is a great song, as is Lead the Way. Lead the Way's ending is very good, and her vocal round at ~3:10 is amazing. It's nearly impossible to sing along to it. I like the song Through the Rain, but I wish Mariah hadn't chosen to sing strangely for it. She sings very powerfully then very softly, then powerfully, then softly. If she sang the song powerfully the whole time, I'd like it much more.

I have high hopes for The Emancipation of Mimi. Although her current single, 'It's like that' is going way off in the direction I don't want Mariah to go, it is better than the other hip-hop Mariah stuff.

All in all, I think Mariah Carey has had a fabulous career resulting in tons of fabulous songs, but for some reason it seems she is still trying to prove herself to the world. Instead of singing songs that mean something to her, she is singing what she thinks people want to hear. I think she has partially seperated herself from that, though, with her new album, based on the two songs I've heard, the press I've heard, and what Mariah has said about the album.

So, that's my whole Mariah bit, I think. :)

Man, I really did like Mariah Carey back in the early 90's. Her first album was great, even though most of the bands I had in my CD collection were old 70's punk. It was in my secret collection along with Madonna's "Immaculate Collection" and a Vanessa Williams CD.

Still love the song "Love Takes Time" -- I'm such a softie.

I, um, really like this song.

And I'm so ashamed.

Don't have all of Music Box. Definitely going to check it out.

I'm checking in to all of your suggestions. I'd love to have all the great Mariah stuff and pretend she never went crazy.

BTW, the Phil Collins remake Against All Odds is nice if you like the original.

I must agree that the end of All in Your Mind is out-freakin-standing. I use that song to prove to the youth that there was a time when Mariah was a great singer and not a prostitute as they may have deducted.

Is the Glitter STrack not on iTMS? I'd love to check the songs you mention from there as well.

That new song of hers is about 2% better than the previous junk, but she's still trying to prove something I don't think she needs to prove. She needs to just sing with that beautiful voice and leave the boom-shigga-boom-hip-hop-style to Ciara, Kelis, etc.

Have you guys heard "We Belong Together" by Mariah? It's her new single, really showcases her voice. Smooth R&B, but the voice is amazing on it.

But I agree, "Hero" is a classic. The lyrics are so powerful and her VOICE!

Shoulda known I'd find you in this thread. ;) This reminds me that I've been meaning to get some of her older music. I'll have to check out the single, but when I looked at her older songs on iTunes, I couldn't decide which ones I wanted so I decided to order her greatest hits instead...only $11 on Amazon, why not? :)

She has an amazing voice...she's had some questionable songs, but an amazing voice. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I wish her song with Flipmode Squad from last year was on iTunes...
