Linkin Park played (http://www.thedailyswarm.com/swarm/linkin-park-played-apple-soho-store/) at the Apple Soho store tonight, fulfilling the rumored (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/19/linkin-park-to-participate-in-upcoming-new-york-apple-event/) "secret" Apple show. The six song set was recorded for a future iTunes release.
As we approach the end of February, however, the absense of press invitations to any special Apple event makes the rumored Apple event (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/07/apple-event-in-last-week-of-february/) increasingly unlikely. Apple typically gives media at least one week warning for events. Indeed, the original rumor (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/07/apple-event-in-last-week-of-february/) was spotty at best -- a non-traditional rumor site with "unconfirmed" information.
Regardless, Apple has been on a roll with weekly Tuesday announcements since Macworld. Apple's self-imposed February 2008 iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) deadline rapidly approaching, so we should expect a release or, at the least, an announcement of delay.

Wow, this news is pretty disappointing, as I was hoping for some crazy cool super secret event. BUT oh well. This either means that the SDK announcement will not be at an event (which seems different for apple) or it is going to be delayed. Nonetheless, we need our Penryn MacBook Pros, so......next tuesday, quiet speed bump?

Sorry, don't agree : Apple got the easy stuff out of the way the last couple of weeks, time for the serious product updates. The weekly tuesday stuff of late is just another form of Apple advertisement, so they can claim "look what we've done ", but bringing very little to the Mac user.
So where are those Macbook Pro's :D ;)

Some sites have enough readership that when they post a rumor like this, it gets around enough that I feel obligated to post it (with qualification), since it's "out there". But if it does turn out to be not true, this will reflect poorly on their future reports.

I DEMAND to know what this has to do with the update of the MBP!
Ok pushy sir...If there was to be an apple event, say to announce the iPhone SDK, most people would think that if there is going to be a somewhat moderate update to the MacBook Pros (which is long overdue and rumored to be "imminent") than it would take place at this event, as opposed to a quiet update on their website on some upcoming tuesday. So people were thinking an event was going to happen, thus a new MBP update. A lot of people are dying for these MBPs, so any kind of event or tuesday seems worth obsessing over. There, your demand has been fulfilled.

And when a revision to the Macbook Pro finally DOES come out, then these pages will be filled with post after post saying "Lame...Apple Sux..why do you do this to me Apple, I've had enough, I'm going to buy a Dell/HP...I'm going to go Vista/XP.." etc.

I believe "Announcements" was the key term here, not releases, not upgrades. Yes, they were not enough to simply satisfy eager Apple fans, but nonetheless, they HAVE been on a roll. And remember, they still have a few products to deliver by the end of February, like the Time Capsule?

Unless its a new form factor I never quite understand the clamour for Mac "updates". An extra 0.2Ghz of processing power and a slightly better graphics card and maybe 20 extra gigs in the base model. Wow.

there are no quad core mobile procs until 3rd quarter of this year. and it is also going to be a extreme processor which is unlikely to be put in the macbook pro. i say sometime in 2009 mobile quad cores will be mainstream.

What exactly are you hoping to get in those updates?... It seems every recent Apple announcement gets hijacked by people crowing over what's missing... As if their individual needs should be paramount to Apple's release roadmap and business strategy.
Is it faster processors? more memory? bigger hard drives? etc etc... Even if those things come I fear you're still going to be fairly disappointed. The reason being - the form factor might stay as it is. Look at the current Apple portable designs (bar the 'air') - they are iconic designs, little has changed since the release of the Titanium Powerbook. In almost 7 years we've only seen small teaks to that form - which is utterly iconic. A 7 year old design, with only minor tweaks to its form - is still the best looking portable on the market, no other manufacturer has anything so simple or elegant.
So what's the natural progression for any new design? I think the 'air' points the way, less moving parts (i.e no latches etc), further miniaturization and a very simple streamlining of the design. Of course none of this takes into account actual soft/hardware functionality (multi touch trackpads etc) because it's a given those things will come and, as with other Apple innovations, we will instantly take them for granted simply because they are so well integrated...
I think Apple are setting up their portables for a form factor change - taking their current design and adding more of a natural feel to it, the 'air' doesn't feel 'manufactured' or 'mechanical' - in the same way the ipod doesn't, or the iphone - or even the way we all interact and use Apple software. Its classic Apple - they release something that looks and feels like it's a natural experience; tactile and instantly accessible.
So rather than wanting to force these things through - and demanding Apple have a stricter agenda of releases (that would potentially be detrimental to overall design - turning innovation of engineering and design into a conveyor belt of rushed and over saturated releases), why not trust that what Apple have right now is a fantastic line up of integrated products - and what they have around the corner, will always build on that for the better.

Well, personally, just some slight improvements will do me but I know what you mean. There are more than a few posters around the forum 'demanding' all the features of a full fledged Mac Pro in their new MBP for 70% of the current price - oh, and a new design that is only slightly bigger than the MBA to boot. Talk about self delusion.
Perhaps a fair call would be more video memory and larger standard HDD sizes.
VRAM for two reasons. (1) is that more people are going to get into HD video editing now that most home camcorders on sale in Best Buy or wherever are HD models and (2) some people will probably want to run boot camp on their MBP's just to play the hottest PC games, most of which really want 512MB VRAM now. The 8600 video card is still not a bad card and higher VRAM levels would see it through in the range until all the major chipset changes due in the second half of this year.
Larger HDD sizes because (1) again, more people are starting to muck around with home made HD video and (2) a lot of people are starting to build up quite big Podcast and other legit downloaded video libraries. I have over 40 episodes of Diggnation plus weekly episodes of several local TV shows from here in Australia on my iTunes podcast library. You add four hours a week of video (even in standard quicktime config, let alone the new Quicktime HD podcasts) to your iTunes library and pretty soon 160GB doesn't look so big!

Hopefully the iPhone SDK gets delayed, the iPhone users have been getting too much play these past few months. Apple still makes computers and they still need to update their Mac Mini and MacBook Pros before the middle of March, so the Apple engineers better get working on that, and the new case design that it's gonna have before they work on software that should have been out for the phone since the beginning.
And that new redesigned MacBook Pro had better earn the name "PRO" by including some sweet hardware to go along with the sweet software that Apple has.
Well, personally, just some slight improvements will do me but I know what you mean. Seriously, go buy yourself a Dell if you want Penryn so bad. But if you don't want a Dell, just shut up already and wait. Go buy the system you need already, or do you already have your "but it doesn't have what I need" excuse ready?

Hahaha, there is a reason Apple dropped 'Computer' from their name awhile back. They want to be in consumer electronics (iPhones, iPods, MBA - which is just a bigger iPhone). They want out of the true computer business. See the lack of updates to their pro line and the recent dropping of the xsan.

Wow, what do they need this much space for? I mean, is it really necessary to have 30 MBs and 250 iPhones lined in a row? Even though I am leaning towards thinking that Apple will delay the SDK, I would like to point out even though Apple generally releases on Tuesdays, with the big items in which a deadline has been self-imposed, they tend to release on the last day of the month.
So, they could invite press tomorrow for an event on Feb. 29th.
But my money is on Apple delaying the SDK. They have become fond of doing that.

It's not so much that I need the extra power, it's that I want hardware that warrants the current price. I've been waiting for a while to make the switch, and as it stands if I was to buy a macbook pro right now, I'd be paying the same price as I would have last July for the same hardware. Now I don't know about the rest of you but I'm a CS/Multimedia student and while I accept paying the apple "premium" for not having to write my own drivers to run OSX on an ASUS or DELL XPS, I'm not going to accept spending as much as a kawasaki on 8 month old hardware.
With the way the MBP keeps being delayed, it might actually starting to make sense for me to brush up on my C skills and get cracking away at those drivers.

I'm getting so tired of people asking about the MBP. What's worse is when it does come they're going to bitch that it isn't what they have been dreaming about and that it doesn't live up to the all hype, speculation and rumor mongerring. And it will somehow be Apple's fault.
No Kidding! And what's even worse, with EACH announcement - they have to piss on the announcement. Or take it out on the MacBook Air. It's flat out wierd. I'm starting to hate these MBP owners. Watch, when the SDK is announced and posted here - the MBP peeps will slam it with negative ratings (just cuz) and clutter up the thread with their whineing.

Welcome to the wonderful world of apple. You know what the best thing is it that once you have a MBP like I do, you could give a crap about updates. Because with every update you're like, that's cool, and then you go back to using your 2 or 3 year old MBP and it works just fine. :):):)

the only reason I'm holding my wallet for the MBP is I would love to see if a bluray disc is offered.
Also, a more pixel dense screen is something I'm looking for.
I don't know what the Peryn really adds, and if it would even be noticable to me (I'm lookin at getting the 2.6ghz).

Why would someone comment on one band being good or not if I am sure that the band/music/genre they themselves listen to isn't that good to someone else anyway.
Not that i care.... LP's last album wasn't as good as their others save for a few songs.
Whether you like them or not, Linkin Park is a band that has a unique and artistic voice.

if one were to have a nice big flat screen, good surround sound and lots of friends and adult beverages, it could be a very fun evening.
no, not quite like being there. one would miss out on the yelling to your friends standing next to you, the sweaty strangers rubbing against you, the parking costs, the overpriced/watered down liquor, sticky floors made so by god-knows-what....yeah, i would sure miss being there.
granted, there are some shows that i would (and do) put up with the aforementioned stuff to experience the "real deal." but it sure would be nice to be able to see some shows without all that crap. plus, there are some tours that don't come near certain locations. it would be a way for folks from smaller cities to see some of the bigger tours. and it would also give a wider audience for some smaller tours that can't afford to make it to every city.
again, not a replacement for a live show. but a "sometimes" alternative.

You have a very good point which I think is an underlying reason many of us have for wanting the new MBP's. We're paying current prices for last year's technology. It's a complete rip off. Apple should at least lower the prices if they're going to make us wait til summer. It's just a kick in the teeth and fuels the argument that apple computers are far more expensive than their pc counterparts. Computer components drop in price quickly and drastically. Sure you're also getting an amazing OS, but parts are parts and this is especially true with the switch to Intel.
The anger doesn't come from a feeling of being owed, it comes from a feeling of being screwed. And some people will complain the change isn't enough, that happens with ALL technology, but we should see something and hopefully soon.
I don't know why everyone wants an iPhone SDK event. All the SDK is for is for developers to create apps. It doesn't mean an instant release of apps and games for the iPhone. Those will still take a few months. And Apple could easily release a quiet penryn MBP on a Tuesday. They changed the processors and a lot of configuration on the Mac Pro's in a quiet release the first week of January.

Actually, it will only be a matter of days to release applications. Apps are already out there and all the developers have to do is convert them to Apple's SDK so we won't need to jailbreak in order to install them. And its already known that Apple has already gathered a few developing teams, even those know for jailbreak apps, and have given them the go to make apps so we can have some on launch day. Its just amazing how this device is one year old and it has barely reached it'd potential, when was the last time people were so excited about Palm and Pocket PC SOFTWARE updates.

The specs aren't the problem, it's the cost for the specs. For the same price the offer should be greater. Apple used to be at the forefront of innovation. Not having a penryn processor when everyone else does is sad. We've come to expect a lot from Apple because they have typically delivered. As consumers we're supposed to be critical of a company that many of us kept afloat while they were going through their troubled spots. And even those looking to make a switch are allowed to have high expectations. Apple isn't asking people to just switch computers; they're asking people to make an entire paradigm shift into a completely different computing environment which is based heavily upon brand loyalty.
Apple hasn't lived up to the expectations it has set for itself. Diversification is a wonderful thing but not when you forget there are other people still using the staple devices. Granted we can't have an iPhone every 6 months nor should we expect it, but a lot of people are being left out in the cold here and there's nothing wrong with them complaining about it. And yes people are still gonna say, "it doesn't have what I need." Do you have the perfect technological device that solves every function and every spec someone needs or wants? Complaining is far better than saying, "It's Apple and I love them no matter what."

You're right. What did the mac pro get silently: new processors and new gfx cards. Anything else? I'd be content with both and only those in new MBPs. High screen res could be silent too and LED for the 17", but a whole redesign will be a disappointment if you're looking for it soon.

Being with Apple is paying with a premium. It's the same thing as anyone who buys a BMW or a rolex watch, why must you buy it if you can get something cheaper and has the same functionality? Apple has not set any expectations for themselves, its those that let themselves get suckered into a cult like state-of-mind that makes them think they need to crank out so many new products at one time. I don't know what expectations you're talking about but from the looks of things Apple is doing what they said they would always verbally, they don't always adopt the hardcore people's standards. Apple has the power to not always have to jump onto every processor that comes out or every technology that comes out just so it can always stay current: i.e - they have not release any HD format support or option for their systems, they could have slapped a Kentsfield processor into an iMac or Mac Mini but they didn't. And the reason why they dont need to update all the time immediately is because they have done a great job of suckering people into their marketing that any update that they spit out, people will jump on... why?... because its Apple!
You don't need to say you love Apple and whatever they do you have to love it, but you have to admit that they met their EXPECTATIONS and suckered everyone into their hype. Look at MacRumors, if you noticed there was a big jump in membership January 2007 and June 2007... why? because of the iPhone. Apple made no promises to always spit out new machines whenever a processor comes out... its YOU GUYS who set those expectations of Apple, and when Apple doesn't provide, you guys feel burnt.
I don't hear of people saying man rolex needs to update their product line or BMW needs to update their 3 and 5 series, because they know the company will always pull through because they know when to make the jump to new technologies and designs.
I SAY NOOB because most newbies who moan and bitch about lack of updates from Apple are people who come from backgrounds where they're spoiled with updates that absolutely unnecessary just because a new component came out. Just because its out, dont expect Apple to adopt it, and I'm not surprised if Apple skips out on Penryn and waits for Montevista or Centrino 2.
NOOB.

Obviously the new MBP isn't going to be the perfect thing in everyone's minds, but it will be this if nothing else: modern hardware at the same price. Current models are essentially a rip-off, as has been exhaustively discussed on here and another hundred forums. So, even if it doesn't have Blu-Ray and advanced multitouch and FW3200, it will still be more modern than the current version. Apple, let us have it.

"Noob" is just a childish "leet" (an no I will not spell it with 3's 7's and whatever & sign you use) term that I find childish and discredits what most people have to say. Unless you're 15, get off it.
Comparing to BMW and Rolex? I don't know what computer you think you're using and in what high regard you hold yours in but mine isn't graced with a gloss coat of turtle wax. Apple is a computer manufacturer and technology company and as it diversifies and gains market share will be more and more subject to above and justified criticism. They're not limited edition models nor are the logic boards autographed anymore. This is technology, which is constantly evolving and companies in that field should be expected to keep up and evolve.
And I said above people shouldn't expect an iPhone every six months. It was a revolutionary device at its announcement as was the iMac, and the current notebook line dating back to the G3's. But now, they're just notebooks, with PC parts that update all the time. Not having more updates doesn't fit the diversification model Apple is surely adopting. This isn't the days of the PowerPC anymore where the chip release was years apart. This is Intel. Apple computers are PC's with an Apple OS now. Blasphemy, I know.
And it's not just us that set expectations. Look what happened to Apple's stock right after Macworld, 220 to 121 at the moment of me writing this. Shareholders are upset too. So it's more than us "hard core" people noticing something is amiss. And yes, the whole stock market is taking a beating, but much of the loss is a direct relation to the lackluster Macworld. So according to you even people who own a piece of the company shouldn't have any right to be upset when Apple isn't delivering?
And you're arguing my case about Apple suckering people in. And now people are upset about it and now you're telling them they have no right to do so. It's ridiculous. People are NOT asking for a new iPhone. Theyy're asking for a processor upgrade to a notebook that hasn't seen an update since last June (I don't wanna hear it about the option to add 2.6GHz and a 250GB HD because anyone will point out that is not an actual update to the system) for the same exact price. Even Rolex and BMW drop the price of their cars over time if you want to use your car/watch reference.
When MS Office 2008 was mentioned at Macworld, Steve Jobs made a stab of it being the last Apple product to make the 64bit switch. It's a little hypocritical when Apple is the last to adopt a new processor because even if they wait for Montevina in the summer, they won't be the first to use it if they're relying on some event for the announcement.
To even begin to argue a tech company is absolved from keeping up with technology because they are said company is asinine and it's those people who make that claim are the true suckers.

I agree with pine. You can't really expect people to buy a MBP at the current price. If they lowered the price, then I think that villanova329 would have more of a point. The reality is that new adopters are going to balk at the price of the current MBP.
As an example, I am ready to buy a new laptop. At this point, I can do my work on both OSX or WinXP and be just as productive in each environment. I'd "like" to look at something different than XP, but I can't justify spending close to 3 grand for a lappy when I can get a more up-to-date model from Dell for just under 2 grand. I'm willing to pay a bit more, but that's just ridiculous. Granted, I am just one case but I have a hard time believing that I am an anomaly.

No, you're not. I'm in the same boat. I'm going to give it another month. I'd rather have a MBP, but I'm not going to pay a huge OSX tax for an old model when all the PC builders have the latest cpus, video cards and largest hard drives for hundreds less.
