My lacie external is getting old, and loud. Can I just take out the HD and replace it with one of my choice? Or am I better just buying something else (Recommendations??? Time Capsule????)

you could replace the HD itself. if you have on of the d2 models, i would re-use the shell, those are solid and nice.
