my mother threw out my 24" iMac box a while back when i first got my iMac and my good friend told me apple won't accept your computer without the box if you need to send it back. i live close to the apple store in chicago so it wouldn't be a problem to drive there for them to replace or make repairs to my iMac.
i was just curious how the whole process works.

You don't need the original packaging for service. It's handy if you need to ship or carry, but absolutely not required, period.
If Apple needs you to ship it to a depot-level repair facility, they'll provide the shipping materials. If you can take it to the Store, fine, but you'll also have to return there to pick it back up, typically.
