I've got a 1.0GHz iBook G4 (40GB, Combo) that I use as a second computer and was wondering what some cheap upgrades would be to make.

The obvious ones are HDD and optical, but I know superdrives usually go for about $100 and HDD are probably also fairly expensive for such an old machine.

Oh and RAM, I'd like to get a 1GB stick, but am waiting for a deal to pop up somewhere.

Is there anything else out there to make the iBook run a bit smoother/make it more friendly to work with?

The only minor annoyances I have with the machine are the noisy keyboard (loudest keys ever!) and when the fan comes on/CD spins it's surprisingly loud.

Any ideas would be welcome even if they're a bit of labor!

I would save up for the Ram as that's one of the biggest things to improve performance.
also HD's are not that expensive, take a look at http://www.macsales.com
Good luck.

What you might want to do is do a clean erase and install. Over time all the "stuff" that accumulates can slow things down a bit.

HD: 120gb, $70. But getting it installed will be time consuming or expensive.

Might be better to get external firewire burner, unless you absolutely need to burn dvds on the road.
