Yeah, kinda overkill. :)
18 gigs of RAM ????
How much did the TransIntl 'purple' 16 gig kit set you back??

Sadly that Quadro is the only board they offer with Stereo support. A bit too overkill and expensive for protein crystallography (An entry level Quadro with Stereo support would do just fine), were heavy 3D is not really needed, if not one of those would have been in my group instead of a winblows-downgraded Dell :-( :-(

$1,378 Now the price has gone up to $1,428
The problem with my set up is that I can not properly assign a dedicate drive (at least I don't know how to do so) for boot camp.
I can't install to my RAID 5 and neither to my other 2 drives connected to ODD SATA :(

I have a couple of questions.
Have you tried any games? How well do games run on the FX 5600?

I know the answer to this without having a Quadro 5600: Not much. The hardware isn't designed for games, so even with 1.5GB of dedicated memory, gaming isn't that much better on the 5600. At least... it's not $2000 better.

I would love to try, but like I said in my previous post, I can't install Windows using bootcamp. I don't have any games for Mac.

A quadro for what you describe offers zero benefits, that money (if it were burning a hole in your pocket) could have went to maxing out the RAM to 32GB and drive space. Sure, it's bragging rights (I guess), but I just don't get spending $2800 for that. The only apps that will see a benefit from that quadro are Maya/Lightwave/Cinema4d type apps and you might even see a drop in games performance. Consider that you could have purchased a second Mac pro for the price that quadro cost and then bragged about having them clustered  To each his own I guess.

ianimate3d, I'm with you. But at least it's not my money. ;)
Those purple DIMMs are exotic. I bought 4 x 2GB from transintl but they were black. (The website shows Gold.) I guess it doesn't really matter since they're inside my machine. :p

I purchased a GeForce GTX with 768MB of GDDR3 for our 2008 Mac Pro. It not only has the same chipset as the Quadro FX 5600 but purposely chose one whose core and memory was overclocked to match the frequencies as the Quadro FX 5600.
Of course, it won't run under Mac OS X, but it screams under Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I ran our Prey benchmark at 1920x1200 "High Quality" and got 166 fps.
I plan to benchmark the GeForce 8800 GT under Vista once our kit arrives to see how it compares. Meanwhile, a friend tested Prey on his 2008 Mac Pro with the GeForce 8800 GT and managed "only" 91 fps under Mac OS X 10.5.2 with the Leopard Graphics Update installed.
I'm told that if I flashed the GeForce 8800 GTX with the ROM from the Mac version of the Quadro FX 5600, it would work under Mac OS X. Think of it: A "Quadro FX 5600 kinda-sorta" for $550.

If you can't understand why someone would need it, then you don't deserve to comment on it. Maybe he does what the card is recommended to do. Maybe he wanted it.

You are right. I just WANTED it. And when you have the money, it is NOT wasted. It is all relative you see. I also got the $560 off from the ADC discount.
I also WANTED 16GB ram, 4 TB drives but I didn't order from Apple. If I did, THAT would be money WASTED!!

I'm actually about to pull the trigger; however, I'm waiting for the possibility of an HDCP capable ACD now that the Blue-ray vs HD-DVD wars are over. If it's not here by June I'm going to go for another 30" ACD. No more Mac Pro goodies after that. :) Macbook Pro or Macbook Air is in the picture, need a mobile mac now for when I travel. Dell and Vista no longer are suitable for travel after using OSX and Mac :)

Totally agree with the earlier posts. If you work for your money, spend it on what you want. If that's an expensive computer, then fair enough.
Yes, you can argue that an expensive computer is a waste of money.
But you could argue the same for expensive cars, audio equipment, holidays, drinking, smoking, or being buried in an expensive coffin.

That's exactly why I'm taking the dirt nap naked! Why waste money on an expensive suit that gets filled with worms within a month?

The more expensive ones are usually hermetically sealed. There are never any worms, termites, anything in them.

Well, if the 30" ACD was a new model that has the same spec as the dell 3008 (with all those fancy connections and high gamut coverage) I would certainly get one. Unfortunately, like most people here on this forum, I am still waiting... Wouldn't it be nice if you have the option of choosing between matte and glossy 30" ??
orpheus1120
Feb 24, 2008, 03:08 PM
oh come on, the current 30" ACD has the best quality LCD panel to date. What more do you want? And speaking of fancy connections, I can hardly see the point really. What else are you gonna connect it to anyway? For me, it's gonna be dual display for me on my MP and I'll call it a day.
Like many have said before, there really isn't much competition for the 30" ACD currently in turn of quality and price, so even if an update ever occurs (which I doubt is anytime soon), I don't think the update matters to me only because my use of the 30" is simple.
It's not really true that many of us are holding off. Plenty have already bought the 30". That's no end to waiting you know. ;)

Starting at $1,999 (plus applicable tax and shipping) I'm sure you can get it for cheaper with a system or coupons. For now, I'm just gonna wait in hopes that Apple will release a similar one.

I beg of you! Take a dump of the cards firmware. I have to look into the possibilities to flash a PC 8800GTX with it!
It would not only enable Mac Users to get a stronger card then 8800GT, it may give pre-08 mac pro users a 8800 card!!
Please follow these steps!
1. Find a USB key that you don't mind formatting.
2. Download this program and install it: http://i.thepcspy.com/USB_Boot.zip. It is a Hewlett Packard program that makes USB keys bootable, but doesn't only work on HP PCs. The archive password is pasta.
3. Use the program to format your USB key. Select the "Create a DOS Startup Disk" option and choose the folder "DOS System Files" from within the unzipped archive.
4. Once the disk has formatted, copy the rest of the files from "DOS System Files" to the root of the USB key. It may ask you whether to replace some files, say "no."
5. Download nvflash 5.57. Any earlier version will not work with the 8800GT. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...lash_5.57.html
6. Copy nvflash.exe and cwsdpmi.exe to the root of the flash drive.
7. Put the 8800GT in the PC, be sure to connect the additional power.
8. Reboot your PC and boot from the flash drive. You may have to enter your BIOS settings and tell it to enable USB boot. On my Intel bios this involves pressing F2 at startup, and the option is in the Booting screen of the BIOS.
9. Once the flash drive boots up, type nvflash --save myrom.rom.
The file myrom.rom now contains a copy of the card's firmware.

I wished I had seen this post earlier, but I am about to catch a flight to Mexico and will be away for a week. I can do it when I get back. However, per your instructions, I do not have a 8800GT! Did you mean the FX5600 instead? Secondly, I also don't have a PC :(

Even if this were possible the 8800GTX would only at most perform like an 8800GTX, it would not perform like the FX 5600 as there is a hardware lock to prevent turning geforce cards into quadro cards and gaining access to the improvements of the quadro drivers.

Haha rofl man, you think I'm saying you can magicly upgrade the 8800 to a quadro card? All im saying is that could be a way of getting a PC GTX to work in Mac Pro. That is not a small thing. It would actually enable all these 2000+ people at
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/geforce8800/signatures.html
to get not only the desired card, but a better one, for roughly the same money.
IF you can flash a 8800GTX with Quadro rom
and
IF a Quadro rom contains older EFI

Yes I did as many people mistakenly believe it is possible to do this. This stems from it once being possible, 6800GTs to FX 4000s was the last popular one.
People have used the OSX Quadro FX 4500 ROM on PC 7800GTs and assumed they would get the benefits, they didn't of course, but using the ROM worked.
