Hosts File with no Netinfo Manager 10.5.2

Okay since Apple have now removed Netinfo Manager from 10.5.2 how do I manually add a host to the host file?

Go to /etc, copy the hosts file to your desktop. Modify it, and drag it back (you'll be asked to authenticate).

This also worked for me...however, why can't you just use the "Get Info" on the hosts file and give your account read and write access? I tried this and it didn't work. Is there a logical reason why not?
