Police said that after McCowan left the truck, Max knocked the vehicle out of gear and sent it rolling backward.
He left the engine running without the handbrake on!?

The engine wouldn't have to be running if it was a manual transmission parked on an incline. Just knocking it out of gear would cause it to roll backwards. I remember doing that once as a kid and getting my butt whooped for it. :D

Sure sounds like it was in a gear, and was knocked into neutral. Not a terribly difficult thing to do, IMHO.

Good point, but that doesn't change the fact the handbrake wasn't on!

:)
Stopping the car, even if still on the road, without putting the handbrake on is an automatic FAIL in the UK driving test. Traffic lights, uphill queues, pedestrian crossings, queues on the flat, you *always* put your handbrake on, unless it's clear that you will be moving again very soon.
Nevermind parking and getting out and leaving a non-driver in the car...
The only exception (I think) is when stopped at a give way sign, when you're expected to be able to get into the main road quite quickly.

The sad thing is this story got a higher slot in the evening news on TV than Iraq or Serbia, with only the Obama/Hilary debates being of greater importance...
What a shame :(
