External display does not work with lid closed

The external 19" LCD display does not work with the lid closed. However, it does work in full 1680x1050 when mirroring is turned off and the lid is open. When I turn mirroring on and the lid is open, the external display does not work at full 1680x1050, it shrinks the external view so the resolution is 1680x1050 but only displays 1280x800 worth of pixels.

Summary:

* lid closed, mirroring on, external display does not work (goes into "out of range" mode)
* lid closed, mirroring off, external display does not work (goes into "out of range" mode)
* lid open, mirroring on, external display will not do a full 1680x1050, instead will do 1280x800
* lid open, mirroring off, external display will do a full 1680x1050

A USB keyboard and mouse are attached. This exact setup worked flawlessly with a gen1 macbook pro out of the box.

How do I make the display work with the lid closed?

move the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard and it will take your mac out of sleep and turn on your display

I neglected to mention that. Moving the mouse or keyboard won't "wake" the monitor on the macbook air. Moving the mouse or keyboard did wake the monitor on the macbook pro.

I've got mine plugged into my 23" ACD and it works as expected and just like any other apple notebook I've had. Are you connecting using DVI or VGA?

A macbook with leopard has the same "out of range" results, but ONLY when using mirrored + lid closed & 1680 x 1050.

I'm about to test it with a macbook pro and leopard. This macbook pro and the monitor work perfectly in the high resolution + mirrored + lid closed mode but only in tiger.

It's looking like it's a problem with the preset monitor settings and leopard and will update this thread with results.

I must ask that power is plugged-in also are the mouse/keyboard Bluetooth?

Yes, the power is plugged in. It is a USB keyboard and mouse.

Try hitting the menu button on the apple remote (if you have one) while the air display is closed. It seems to activate the computer.

out of range usually means the hertz are set wrong

I was convinced it didn't work with the Air - until last week. I brought my MBA to work in sleep mode rather than shut off like I normally do. I plugged in the power and Monitor (KB and mouse are bluetooth) and was surprised to see it wake-up before I opened the lid!

I've found that if I close the lid, it actually goes to sleep. I wait about 20 seconds and then move the mouse and it will wake up again - kinda like a delayed reaction.
