http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)
Today marks the eighth birthday of the MacRumors.com (http://www.macrumors.com) website. It also happens to be the 53rd birthday of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
The MacRumors Forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/), the discussion boards for the MacRumors family of sites, reached a milestone this week as well, passing five million forum posts.
It took MacRumors 3.3 years to reach one million posts, 1.3 years to reach two million posts, 10 months to reach three million posts, 9 months to reach four million posts, and only 6 months to reach five million posts. We attribute our continued rate of growth both to MacRumors' rank as the top Apple news site on the web (http://www.quantcast.com/macrumors.com), and to the increased interest in Apple and its products, especially since the introduction of the iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/01/09/apple-announces-the-iphone/).
http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/02/20/003321-5000000posts_400.png
MacRumors is celebrating its latest forum milestone as it has in the past, with an Avatar Contest! Forum members are invited to create original avatars and enter them in the contest. The winners will be selected in polls and will receive extra forum privileges. For the full contest description and rules, see the Five Million Post Avatar Contest (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=438141).
A few interesting reader stats from our recent survey:
- 52% own a MacBook Pro (or PowerBook)
- 41% own an iMac
- 40% own a MacBook (or iBook)
- 30% own a Mac Pro (or PowerMac)
- 17% own a Mac mini
- 2.6% own an Xserve
- 74% own an iPod
- 31% own an iPhone
- 13% own an iPod Touch
- 12% own an Apple TV
We thank our members, contributors, sponsors, and all those for whom MacRumors is an online home or a regular stop. We'd also like to thank our volunteers for their hard work and continued efforts in keeping MacRumors the popular site it is.

iPhone's release looks like it caused a visible bump in the posting rate! You can see it in the steep upswing in number of posts that happens right after the july 07 mark on that graph, and then the post rate slopes back down to where the previous posting rate trend was projecting towards.

Happy Birthday MacRumors (and Steve Jobs)!!! Add myself to the mix of people with the same question, who was the poster of the 5,000,000th post?
And now: only 74% own an iPod? Who ARE you other 26%?
:D
Even though I think that you might understand it, 74% use an [clickwheel] iPod as their regular music device, while the other 26% are a mix of iPod touch users and iPhone users.
EDIT: Neverminds, now that I look at it again, I may be wrong.

But what percentage have Safari crash multiple times a day? I am sure that it is high. I would prefer to have a more stable browser that might be slightly slower, than to have it crash a minimum 3 times a day.

Since then, the mac, myself and this site have been inseparable. I have gone to other rumor/mac-centered sites and nothing ever as homey as this one. Its been fun to see how the right sidebar has grown over the past years. Good job Arn. Here's to another great 8 years.

Happy birthday MacRumors. I think you're the most maturest eight year old I know. If the American Government had a dollar for every post, the could pay for one elementary school to have Macs instead of Dells. Isn't that great?

The MacRumors Forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/), the discussion boards for the MacRumors family of sites, reached a milestone this week as well, passing five million forum posts.
Oddly, 4.7 million of them have to do with when the next MBP will be released.

Happy Birthday. I bought my 1st Mac back in February and then an iPhone quickly followed. Since then this site has been one of my few regular stops on the Internet. I came over from Aximsite and I can honestly say this site has been just as helpful as that site was when I got my X30.

And now: only 74% own an iPod? Who ARE you other 26%?That's the 26% who stole their iPods from someone on the subway, so they don't really own them.
And happy birthday Steve. Here's to another ummm... 53 years? :pThe oldest men live to about 114, so Steve has four more years until he's halfway.

I've been a member for five of them. Lurker since Sept. 2002.
I have to say this is the best forum I've ever seen. Not only a great Mac resource but also a great sense of community.
Arn has always maintained a level head when it comes to moderation and has passed it on to the other Mods as well. MacRumors is the yardstick I use to gauge other forums.
Thanks Arn and all the other mods for making this such a great site!

Only 74% own an iPod? That seems pretty low - considering the venue. I can see the division between MBP, iMacs and MPs, but not everyone has an iPod?
I would have guessed in the 90's on that one...
Happy B-Day MR!

I remember finding this site when I was looking for my first Mac - I finally had the money. At that time the rumours were swirling for an LCD iMac. I bought a Powerbook Titanium and shortly after spent the evening watching the Macworld Keynote and the Macrumor's coverage. It was so much fun when time magazine let it slip for the beautiful iMac. Great times. I was hooked.
Anyway congratulations on eight years! And thanks to all the moderators past and present for keeping the forums so clean, free of spam, and an enjoyable read. Also thanks to everyone who has put in the time to help out with answering technical questions the depth of help on these forums in astounding.

arn, longofest and all contributors,
As a switcher of 12 months, thanks for a great site. It hasn't taken long for me to become a regular (toooo regular) vistor to the site. Always interesting and informative, it's made my journey into MacDom much less painful than I feared.
All I need is the MacBook Pro update to make me happy.
Keep up the great work

Happy Birthday MacRumors! :)
Actually, I didn't know MR before I switched (that was in December '03, I only registered in the forums four months later), but it was really this website which served as a starting point for my interest about all things Apple (yes, I didn't figure out Apple was such a cool company and had such a great future ahead only a bit much after buying a Mac, go figure  – that has made me cherish my decision all that much more). It was also MR's community which made me realize, almost instantly, how great Apple users can be both individually and as a whole. Your posts, the links you shared and the urge to reply they instilled in me also helped me a lot on improving my english writing skills, by the way, so thanks for that, too! ;)
About the things I'll never forget about this site are the stellar and ever-improving stevenotes' coverage and the almost mandatory "PowerBook G5 next tuesday!!!1!!one!!!" comments... Maybe this tuesday? :D

Feb 24, 2008, 07:21 PM
I think part of the success of this website is that apple legal won't touch it, because this site doesn't post any leaks from its own sources, instead it just rounds up the rumors from all the other rumor sites.
The other part, (the major part) is the fact that this place is the BEST Apple website period. Even apple.com pales in comparison to the amount of information and help you can find on this website.
And finally, the fact that since this is a mac community, everyone is awesome.

So I am new here, but I was wondering what the ratings mean at the bottom of the articles. Are people responding to the content of the article, or something about the way it is written? I was just wondering why MR's birthday would get any negative ratings at all.
BTW, thank you MacRumors, your site is great. I spend far too much time here.
