Story updated. continue discussion here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=440914)
We'd originally published a story suggesting that MacBook Pros would see updates this Tuesday. Since that time, we've received conflicting reports as to what exactly is being delivered to Apple stores this coming week. Based on product cycles, the safe bet is the MacBook Pro, with 264 days since the last update. That, however, has not stopped Apple from introducing a slew of other products over the past few weeks (iPod Shuffle updates, Aperture 2.0, 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod Touch)
Sources reveal that shipments of new Apple products are planned for midweek. Historically, such information tends to reliably predicts new product releases. But we can't be confident these necessarily represent new MacBook Pros, or another unexpected announcement (such as premature MacBook or iMac updates).
Previous tidbits of information surrounding the new MacBook Pros have indicated that they will incorporate Penryn processors, an LED screen in the 17" model, and the new-and-improved multi-touch trackpad found in the MacBook Air.

also the other thing i find interesting is that everyone was saying apple would wait for montevina?? i think it is,, which is out much later in the year,
if this is the case this is simply a small chnage before the larger change in june?

After all those ups and downs in the last weeks I thought I'll get macrumors abstinent and let Apple inform me aboutr updates via newsletter but I couldn't resist - first sings of macrumors addiction?
Now I really hope for a release as I had some serious problems when I had to work with third party laptop material especially in video encoding (on a four year old pentium celeron with only 512 MB RAM) and not enough space left to render the video - it was horrible - the composing took me about two hours but then it took me three hours to clear enough space on the machine so the DVD could be rendered and after 7 hours of rendering the machine crashed anyway -
I need that MACBOOK PRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My guess is 2,1 GHz Quad Core CPU for the upcoming release (high end model) that would be a huge speed bump , don't you think ?.. rest of models will not see much of a change .... blue ray disc drive will be added on the next release in december '08 timeframe ... - my premonition :D

Here's my question. If it does come out Tuesday, can we expect any bugs with the first set of models? Or, since it will likely be the same tried and true overall design (with some new internals) will it be just as "reliable" as the current MBP's in stores?

It looks like the Apple event originally scheduled for February 26th has been postponed until mid-Marchish. Apple would have made the decision last week because they usually allow a journalists a week to arrange travel to the evnt. The reason for the delay is likely that the SDK isn't ready for primetime and the developer apps aren't polished enough to be shown.
Obviously SJ is not able to show his shiny new baby, so looked around in his desolation and found, somewhere under a pile of iPhone boxes, the forgotten plan to upgrade the MBP :o

Hell yes....!
It's very useful and just to mention the construction of the MBA may be wasteful as some Japanese engineers seem to think, but it's far superior to the current MBP's flimsy, creaky case. I am hoping Apple give us a MBP that is built as strong as the Air, it doesn't have to look like it, but it would nice if it were just as strong.

Not getting my hopes up (yeah right) but will be autorefreshing the apple store every 30 seconds on tuesday just the same.
E-sata port, hi-res led on the 17" descent wifi range are my modest hopes.
Sort of hoping they keep the current keyboard but I guess you can get used too pretty much anything.
Touchpad would be nice but I´d much rather have apple build a functional, nice looking and ergonomic mouse.
Yeah and if any apple devs read this forum please fix the textfield input in iPhones safari. Worst evar...

If true I think those are nice bumps.
The current Alum design is about as perfect as it comes, just three issues:
1) User removable disk drive, so we can upgrade them ourselves.
2) Better WIFI reception, maybe different material where the Antennas are.
3) Magnetic closure

Bad advice.
If you need it NOW, go to the Apple Store to pick it up. If you don't need it for an undefined period of time, cancel the order and order it when you DO need it. It's not uncommon for new computers to take weeks to show up at the Apple Store after announcement (although not as often with simple speed bumps).
Still, waiting an undetermined period of time for an unannounced product for a computer you need now is silly. You buy computers when you need them or when there's a significant change in the value proposition that makes them attractive. This attempt to plan upgrades is silly.

sorry but why would there be an event for the release of an SDK? Apple doesn't do a roadshow every time they release XCode. Unless there are apps ready to download using the new SDK, it's a developer-only release, they don't invite journalists to things like that, they mail everyone registered on the ADC and tell them it's there for download.
They've done upgrades to iPhone and iTouch with nothing more than a message on the store, an SDK alone doesn't warrant an event. even the expected upgrades to MBP warrant nothing more than a headline on the store.
I find it hard to believe there was ever an event on the 26th, I think that was a real stretch based on one single rumour.
It's sad to see that the MBP story has been pulled from the front page again, I was actually starting to hope this was really the week, I want my first intel MBP, but I'd like it to be a little more futureproof than buying the current model.

For me, I'm hoping MBP will come up with Quadro like this one (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_m6300?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz). That's probably unlikely, but who knows? :)
....
Surely my next notebook will be MBP so I can dump my lovely iBook G4.. but when!
The link you provided seems to flash the rom of the videocard. I am more talking about a software solution, increasing the clocks on demand when gaming. This can make a substantial difference when playing games, although the temperatures of the videocard must be monitored more closely.
The 8600 GT in MacBook Pro is actually underclocked by default by Apple. That is the price we pay for their "slim" case design, I guess. But I guess it doesn't affect Apple's prices, we still pay for a fully clocked stock 8600 GT?

I hope this is true this time. I am happy for everyone who is waiting (I am not) For me the wait for the product release is one of the good parts in buying a new Apple computer. I have always waited for every single item I purchased from Apple because I kind of enjoy the wait and the anticipation. Not sure if this makes sense to everybody. Anyway - I am enjoying a 17" Macbook Pro since June 20th 2007. Would love to have the LED backlight as well. . .

...the construction of the MBA may be wasteful as some Japanese engineers seem to think, but it's far superior to the current MBP's flimsy, creaky case. I am hoping Apple give us a MBP that is built as strong as the Air, it doesn't have to look like it, but it would nice if it were just as strong.A small case redesign still makes sense; they have to re-stamp the metal panels anyway. A more logical move seems to be to do all the modifications now rather than do a second set in 6 months or a year.
Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

editor note: I've removed the story off the front page for now as some conflicting information has arisen. I still believe the MBP's are coming on Tuesday, but I need to reconcile some information, and have pulled the story temporarily because of it.
So, uh, without wanting to be offensinve, you put this post up front for 1 hour and 20 minutes first thing Sunday morning and then took it down to check sources or conflicting information? The reliability of the forum may come into question here. I, for one, had already begun to rearrange my calendar and travel in my head...
So now we have a situation where we are WAITING for a message confirmation or withdrawal because we are on a thread that is for Apple loyalists (mostly) who are WAITING for an overdue product upgrade.
Is this whole thing just a huge doctoral dissertation study in Pavlovian psychology?
Reward - Withdraw - Lure - Punish - Reward - Evaporate - Reward - FREAK OUT
This is one reason why our world is so insane... Every experiment we do in this field is based on the responses of white rats or college sophomores ... and now, Apple Enthusiasts who are being treated like either white rats or college sophomores.
Clarification posting, please... Or PM? Or Something?

Hmm.. Well no doctoral dissertation going on here.. Just an editor of a major Mac news/rumor website who posted a story, then found new information from another source which warranted the original story being pulled. Its simply responsible journalism.

I want a new MBP as much as anyone else, but I thought I'd temper some of the high expectations some have, lest they otherwise be disappointed with the update.
17" LED backlit screen: Extremely unlikely. 17" LED notebook screens are neither shipping nor even announced, anywhere, at all.
Case redesign: Unlikely. The new MBPs will use the current Santa Rosa chipset, while Montevina in 6-or-so months will offer a 58% reduction in area. Look for Apple to take full advantage of that extra space with a case redesign incorporating Montevina.
Blu-ray support: Unlikely. To my knowledge, no one is yet making an ultra-slim optical drive with a Blu-ray diode that would fit in current MBPs. In 6 months this will probably be a different story.
Don't say I didn't warn you. :)

If they don't have all those new features I dance in the street. I bought the current Macbook Pro 17" and I felt a little bad about it because I sure want the features you mentioned (minus the redesign. I think the current design including the keyboards are perfect. ) Now - I know it doesn't make a lot of sense that I am happy about that, because I have what I have anyway but it just tells me that I made the right decision (not to wait). I couldn't care less about Penryn. Sure - will be a little faster. But not more then 20%.

Personally, I don´t care if Apple includes Blu-ray drives or not. What I think they should do, though, is give full software support to this format. It is ridiculous that one cannot watch BR content in Mac computers (except data).
I would not buy a MBP blu-ray drive (probably BTO) because of the price, but there are good external options out there

Unless the price was absolutely outrageous, I would pay just about whatever :apple: wanted for a Blu-Ray drive, especially if I would be able to write on blank Blu-Ray discs. I don't buy computers very often, and I've had this PowerBook G4 for 4 years now. I'm going to buy the best that I can in a 15" size because I will probably have this new MacBook Pro for another 4 years.

would 1680x1050 be considered hi-res on a 15 or would it need to be 1920x1080? This that technically possible and would it be readable on a 15.4" screen?

Don't say I didn't warn you. :) And 6 months after montevina they will have 32nm chips, and 6 months after that, holographic projection that substitutes the need for screens, and 6 months after that.....you get the picture.
The update this teusday will incorporate a subtle case redesign, however, their will be not be a radical redesign for montevina. MBP is about constant, SUBTLE updates.

Sure, I've been using 1920x1200 on my two year old Dell Latitude D810. Problem is, I don't want it any other way.. Currently there's only T61p from Lenovo which would give me 1920x1200 on a PC. Sucks.. Sure hope at least the macbook pro 15" will give me something close to this.

Apple generally doesn't do "subtle" case redesigns. Unless you consider the different look of the touchpad a "redesign". And you sound rather sure about what will or will not happen without providing any evidence.

I am on my 3rd MBP now and have had one since 2002 when it was a 667mhz g4 chip and titanium case. I get a new one every 18 months. Since 2002, the case has been consistently and SUBTLY updated:
aluminum case
backlit keyboard in a new color
all new hinge mechanism on the screen
iSight integration
more rounded case design
relocating all ports to the side
the MBP updates will always be subtle.

Maybe the other blog sites will be getting the same info? Anyway, bring on the new MBPs, and as I've shown before on these threads, here is what I want it to look like...
here is how i whant it to look like (ive modified the org pic to how i whant it = background is just a job ive made). gunmetall finish and a screen that goes more to the edge of the screen, :D
a quadcore would be nice in the new model. mbp needs to get faster if its to compete with newer pc models. 4gb ram and a faster gpu

Course they can put a quadcore in your new MBP.
And then slam a nice fat heatsink on it making the case 2x thicker.
Dont be dumb!
Doesn't anybody here appreciate the fact that multiple cores are only going to be useful once software developers start re-architecting their code to utilize multi-threading ???
WAKE UP!
The update when it comes will be as per the OP.
