LOL. Now that's funny. I predict the store will come back in just under two hours, in time for most Apple retail stores to open on the East Coast of the US at 10AM EST.

In an announcement that has stunned the computer industry, Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan admitted that the Unix operating system and C programming language created by them is an elaborate prank kept alive for over 20 years. Speaking at the recent UnixWorld Software Development Forum, Thompson revealed the following:

"In 1969, AT&T had just terminated their work with the GE/Honeywell/AT&T Multics project. Brian and I had started work with an early release of Pascal from Professor Niklaus Wirth's ETH labs in Switzerland and we were impressed with its elegant simplicity and power. Dennis had just finished reading 'Bored of the Rings', a National Lampoon parody of the Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy. As a lark, we decided to do parodies of the Multics environment and Pascal. Dennis and I were responsible for the operating environment. We looked at Multics and designed the new OS to be as complex and cryptic as possible to maximize casual users' frustration levels, calling it Unix as a parody of Multics, as well as other more risque allusions. We sold the terse command language to novitiates by telling them that it saved them typing.

Then Dennis and Brian worked on a warped version of Pascal, called 'A'. 'A' looked a lot like Pascal, but elevated the notion of the direct memory address (which Wirth had banished) to the central concept of the language. This was Dennis's contribution, and he in fact coined the term"pointer" as an innocuous sounding name for a truly malevolent construct.

Brian must be credited with the idea of having absolutely no standard I/O specification: this ensured that at least 50% of the typical commercial program would have to be re-coded when changing hardware platforms. Brian was also responsible for pitching this lack of I/O as a feature: it allowed us to describe the language as "truly portable".

When we found others were actually creating real programs with A, we removed compulsory type-checking on function arguments. Later, we added a notion we called "casting": this allowed the programmer to treat an integer as though it were a 50kb user-defined structure. When we found that some programmers were simply not using pointers, we eliminated the ability to pass structures to functions, enforcing their use in even the Simplest applications. We sold this, and many other features, as enhancements to the efficiency of the language. In this way, our prank evolved into B, BCPL, and finally C. We stopped when we got a clean compile on the following syntax:

for (;P("\n"),R-;P("|"))for(e=3DC;e-;P("_"+(*u++/8)%2))P("|"+(*u/4)%2);

At one time, we joked about selling this to the Soviets to set their computer science progress back 20 or more years.

Unfortunately, AT&T and other US corporations actually began using Unix and C. We decided we'd better keep mum, assuming it was just a passing phase. In fact, it's taken US companies over 20 years to develop enough expertise to generate useful applications using this 1960's technological parody. We are impressed with the tenacity of the general Unix and C programmer. In fact, Brian, Dennis and I have never ourselves attempted to write a commercial application in this environment.

We feel really guilty about the chaos, confusion and truly awesome programming projects that have resulted from our silly prank so long ago."

Dennis Ritchie said: "What really tore it (just when ADA was catching on), was that Bjarne Stroustrup caught onto our joke. He extended it to further parody, Smalltalk. Like us, he was caught by surprise when Nobody laughed. So he added multiple inheritance, virtual base classes, and later ... templates. All to no avail. So we now have compilers that can compile 100,000 lines per second, but need to process header files for 25 minutes before they get to the meat of "Hello, World".

Major Unix and C vendors and customers, including AT&T, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, GTE, NCR, and DEC have refused comment at this time. Borland International, a leading vendor of object-oriented tools, including the popular Turbo Pascal and Borland C++, stated they had suspected this for a couple of years. In fact, the notoriously late Quattro Pro for Windows was originally written in C++. Philippe Kahn said: "After two and a half years programming, and massive programmer burn-outs, we re-coded the whole thing in Turbo Pascal in three months. I think it's fair to say that Turbo Pascal saved our bacon". Another Borland spokesman said that they would continue to enhance their Pascal products and halt further efforts to develop C/C++.

Professor Wirth of the ETH institute and father of the Pascal, Modula 2 and Oberon structured languages, cryptically said "P.T. Barnum was right." He had no further comments.;)

Why wouldn't they allow it? Most of us were hoping for a 2.5 low/2.6 hi split on the MBP's, but because Apple tries to discourage low end buys, I believe the listed specs. I sure hope they are fake though.

I do not expect Apple to cater to my needs. It is a company's prerogative as to what they release and when, and to base all decisions of this type on what will be best for the company. Fine.

But if it is another God D****d MacBook update and EXCLUDES the MacBook Pro, I, for one, will be very angry.

I bought my MBP 2.2 about a month ago. Considering the fun and pleasure I have had from it, I'm glad I didn't wait for this.

The multitouch is nice, but definately not a killer-function for a business laptop (how many pictures am I going to rotate or zoom?) used mainly for advanced presentations etc. In addition, the extra power would have been nice, but more power is always around the corner.

The accumulated fun of the past month (switched from Windows) is larger than the excitement of a bit more memory and a multitouch feature...

Definately 512 video card in 2.5GHz MBP it's a typo on the British site.
What I want to know does this mean that this card will be put in the imac soon?

Does anyone know if there is *any* way to determine if the 7200 drive is a Seagate or Hitachi drive before you buy it? I realize you can check it after you get it but wanted to know if there was a way to find out beforehand...I'm making the assumption that Apple uses both in their MBPS.

Ring Apple, they should be able to tell you that, providing your intention is to buy then :)

Does anyone know: did they change the keyboard at all on the MacBook Pro? I hate the old keyboard, and I was really hoping they would make it like the Macbook or MBA. It looks the same as the old one in the pictures, but maybe it feels different when pressed (i.e. more responsive, more tactile feedback, less spongy)? Thanks.

Well I don't know about anyone else but now the Macbooks are done, I'm wondering what else Apple has left to update this year ?

Were two months into 2008 and just about everything's had some sort of refresh...

Are they making space for something really amazing?

Hope it's a proper Apple Television - that's the last big 'Apple shaped' hole in my home...

Well, on the cynical side, Apple could make little updates for the whole year pretty easily. An iPhone update one week, iLife point upgrade, etc. However, if they were trying for that they could have separated out the MB and MBP announcements.

Hopefully, they've decided to build an excitement around every Tuesday - have people hitting their site EVERY Tuesday. They won't do that if the releases are too minor.

There are many things Apple hints at having - they've been talking about great new products for a couple of years and have provided some great stuff, but it always sounded like they were intending on more. I wonder how much gets prototyped and abandoned. Maybe they are working on touch iMacs & touch displays, a 9" MacBook Air, tablet Macs or a bigger iPod Touch, 'lite'/thin terminals for your kitchen and bedroom or video phones for homes (using iChat?), a media server or a real TV :). All of those are relatively small steps from existing Apple products... just a question of where they are pushing towards and what works.

Never on the Friday. Steve's vacationing with Gov Arnold.

But look to Tuesday for new iMacs to come since they use the same processor as the MacBooks. Hopefully Apple can do something about the 10.5.2 iMac freezes. Plug up all three USB ports and the keyboard will get sluggish and then the iMac 24" 2.8 extreme freezes up – no mouse or keyboard action - not even a force quit is available. Keep one USB port open and there's no problems.

I'd jump on it IF they threw an iMac Extreme out there with a 30" glossy. Dream-n, I know...

If you follow the Apple refurbs page you can guess what's coming because they unload the inventory at great prices.

Well so I have a couple questions to ask for everyone's opinion.

1. How big of a step is 256 graphics to 512. If I want to game, is it really worth $500, because that's practically the only difference. I'm not going to be a hardcore gamer, but I'd like to be able to buy a game 3 years down the line and still play it, not necessarily on best graphics, but at least not running slugishly. I'll probably run Halo 2, battlefield 2142, half life 2, maybe crisis (about as high end of a game I'd ever run), etc. Is 512 really worth the extra $500 if I'm not a hardcore gamer?

2. Now or Montevina? Should i get one in a month when I can, or wait for this summer to get the Montevina update. I've heard the speeds not going to be much better and I know the processor will still be penryn, just a platform change. But does anyone see a new graphics card like say the 8800M being in it? or will it probably just be a 8600/8700 again. I thought about waiting too, to see what the probably eminent redesign will be. I LOVE the current design, but what if they make it thinner and add a magnetic latch??? However, the current design has almost all the bugs worked out, whereas a new design will have kinks to work out... So its a hard decision. Any input from you guys would be awesome. thanks. As of now, I'm leaning towards buying one in a month.

1- For the core used, you may not see too much of a difference. Games 3 years from now may be too advanced for the card even with the extra ram. I wouldn't make a choice on graphics ram alone, there has to be something else in the more expensive models that you like.

2- Really it is up to you. If you wait, you will get told you may as well wait till Nehalem.

Yeah, jeez... has been down for an hour or more!

Tried to check the status of my MacBook Pro order, and the store has been down forever! Hopefully that means new products... and hopefully the mini will finally get shiny black plastic on top to replace the dated white look. New iMacs would be fantastic, too -- my dad's in the market for one.
