View Full Version : More New Apple Products... This Tuesday?
arn
Feb 24, 2008, 03:46 PM
We'd originally published a story suggesting that MacBook Pros would see updates this Tuesday. Since that time, we've received conflicting reports as to what exactly is being delivered to Apple stores this coming week. Based on product cycles, the safe bet is the MacBook Pro, with 264 days since the last update. That, however, has not stopped Apple from introducing a slew of other products over the past few weeks (iPod Shuffle updates, Aperture 2.0, 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod Touch)
Sources reveal that shipments of new Apple products (not just Time Capsule) are planned for midweek. Historically, such information tends to reliably predict new product releases. But we can't be confident these necessarily represent new MacBook Pros, or another unexpected announcement (such as premature MacBook or iMac updates).
Previous tidbits of information surrounding the new MacBook Pros have indicated that they will incorporate Penryn processors, an LED screen in the 17" model, and the new-and-improved multi-touch trackpad found in the MacBook Air.

I hope they fix the wetness of the new iMacs (20" models)... it's not nice to be a switcher and have a bad experience with the Mac* (As it is a wonderful and enjoyable machine, so we don't want former Windows users think otherwise!)

If it really is one of the three (MBPs MBs or iMacs), I'm putting my money on new MBPs because that seems a LOT more likely than the other two.
Heck I think I'll buy no matter what gets updated just to have some closure on this gall darn waiting game.

What is taking Apple so long to integrate Blu-Ray across it's line?! For a company with computers focused on media, this is unacceptable in my book -- at least make it a BTO option!!!
Also, lack of 3/4G integrated wireless is just stupid in MacBook Pros, at least as a BTO option, not taking up any card slot!

I personally think this might happen. I remember reading that there was a shortage of these new processors, so maybe Apple took the decision to delay the MBP release until the MacBook was old enough to upgrade.
At that point, Apple could then to a massive overhall on the whole laptop range, tieing in the MB and MBP to the new style of the MBA. This would provide Apple with a massive boost to sales, and attract a LOT of attention!

Apple is on quite roll with new product releases. The stock if in better overall economy would be sky high. Every Tuesday since MW they've announced something, let's hope this week it is MBP's. I'd like a new case design too.
Hopefully new shipments aren't just 2G shuffles or time capsules, even though it would be nice to get one of each.

What is taking Apple so long to integrate Blu-Ray across it's line?!
Because they've got both feet firmly suck about 5 year behind. Case in point - combo drive on cheap MB and MM. Only once they've stopped shafting customers with that old p.o.s. can they move on and give their pro line ( supposedly the best platform for content creativity ) the optical drive it deserves.

I'm waiting for Tuesday evening's slew of threads about how disappointed everyone is with what was released, or how what was released didn't revolutionize the computer industry, or how it doesn't have sixteen FW800 ports, or ...

I am not sure what the "sources" are but it sounds like an Apple plant. The rumors and the delays have been going on so long that there must be some in the laptop market who are wondering if they can get by on a Vaio for the next year or so until the MBPs catch up. So with all the grumbling it would make sense for Apple to plant a tantalizing story of upcoming Feb announcement, imply a MBP update is coming and prevent any reverse-switchers.
By the way, while I am officially a switcher, I run both flavors on my network since some clients provide wintel machines. My policy is not buy another Wintel but this is getting ridiculous ...

its wouldn't be the "apple way"
apple has allways been for a slow aproach.
eventually it they will announce a computer or monitor with the multi touch included.
the mutli touch trackpad is just the first step on the road.
by the way it would be to soon to announce such a product, it will be a drastical change on how we use labtops, it would be to sudden, to soon for us buyers and to soon for the industry.

The MacBook Pro is not a "***** car". It's Apple's top of the line laptop! It's way overdue for a complete revision. Introducing a MacBook Touch or MacBook Pro (Touch) would be the hottest selling item since iPhone. I think Apple is going to update the MacBook Pro we all have with multi-touch keypad, and then in June or Jan. '09, introduce the all-new MBP Touch.

Ok - Im not saying the MBP is ***** - all I am saying is that Apple would rather open a new segment than update the existing segment. Remember that its a monumental leap to go from keyboards to touch-screen. These things start mega high end and depending on take-up proliferate down through the business lines over many generations.
Secondly, touch screen as I see it here in Cali, appears to be for people who wanna look cool and get laid as opposed to professional people who wanna work, hence MBP(rofessional)...

Wouldn't there have been drops in the delivery times at the Apple store or some tell-tale shortages in Mac inventories? I haven't seen any posts here about that. I'm leaning toward this not happening, especially with the iMac. It's starting to look like Apple's doing this year what they did with the iMac last time around, which is significant updates once-per-year. Sort of pathetic, really. Their line-up should be updated no less than 3 times a year. There's no real excuse for not doing that and if Apple can't do that, they should drop the prices off over the lifetime of the machine.

Again, I have to have the same old bulky MBP with some minor updates like a multi-touch keypad. We deserve more for waiting this long.
Bulky MBP?! What? Please, show me a 15" professional quality laptop that is smaller and lighter than the MBP.
There's a reason the basic design of the pro laptop hasn't changed since the PB days, when you find something that works, you keep it.

I'm not saying that there is a smaller and lighter pro laptop then MBP; I'm just saying that Apple is way overdue on completely revising the MBP and introducing the All-New MacBook Pro. And, when they do, they should definitely include a screen that gives you the option to multi-touch if you wanted to.

Because they've got both feet firmly suck about 5 year behind. Case in point - combo drive on cheap MB and MM. Only once they've stopped shafting customers with that old p.o.s. can they move on and give their pro line ( supposedly the best platform for content creativity ) the optical drive it deserves.

I'll agree about the clip latch, that would be nice to get rid of, but I really like the current MBP design. IMO, the keyboard is awesome and the general look of the MBP is still way ahead of everyone else. The look of the keyboard with the speaker grills and the matching touchpad just looks so perfect to me; I can't imagine a total redesign looking any better, but Apple is certainly full of surprises.

You can't imagine how a redesign would make it look better? Have you seen either the MBA or even the MB? The MBP was nice at one time in the same way a 1970's Lamborghini is nice compared to a current day model. It's still neat, but you can't seriously want to live in the past forever. It's time for a change. Time to move on.
They will make it better, and you'll probably like the new look. Remember this: there were people who HATED the current design when it came out too. They don't seem to mind today though.

But don't you think by this June, it's finally time for that incredible new MBP Touch?
Also, the touch screen in Cali theory is untrue. Yes, people like to show it off, but it's user-friendliness and it's functionality is better than anything out there.
Apple is just barely starting to implement Multi-Touch with the MacBook Air. And even if they ever do make a Multi-Touch screen which I don't think they will for at least 3-5 years if at all then the OS has to support it. Small detail ;) What they are going to do is get rid of the keyboard and track pad and have that replaced with an entire touch surface which is NOT the screen. That will be in about 2 years when 10.6 comes and they have added all that into the OS.
If you want a touch screen then what you should be hoping for is the new Newton. That will be separate from the laptops.

It's funny how some of you fantasise about the MBP multi-touch. Seriously, if Apple would be producing such a device they'd have to include quite some changes in the OS AND within the hardware. My opinion is that such a change wouldn't be revealed during a short Apple-Store-Downtime. It'd be a huge- advertised- event.
A multi touch trackpad, however, is nothing new to Apple. They won't show of woth the same technique twice- that's not Apple style.
So I agree with those users stating a multi touch-Macbook (Tablet-Mac) won't hit the market until 10.6.
Time Capsule wont be a reason either to shut down the store and the SDK will be announced by event, according to my experience with Apple.
It's probably going to be a MBP with Penryn & Multitouch since this is only a small update, no big change of design or major hardware changes.

Umm... when you touch something it doesn't fog up, it gets smudges from the oil your skin glads produce (unless you are one of the few % who don't leave finger prints because you don't produce said oil... lucky you), so defogging a screen would be dumb... i hear when they release the new notebook with touch screen it will come with a monkey housed inside (all squished up because it's going to be a teeny-tiny computer) with a squeegee so that any time there is a smudge on your screen it will come out and clean it for you! Wow that would be a swell computer wouldn't it? Come on steve please make that one next... ;)

when it comes to a multi-touch screen i think that apple will come out with a tablet style computer with a swivel screen and an optional use stylus. However I don't think it will come out for another 2 or 3 years.

If there is a new MBP coming out, which I pray that there is, I hope it looks nothing like that. I think the keyboard on that image would be way too much like the MB keyboard and that it would totally destroy the effect of having a "Pro" notebook.
Well Apple thought it was good enough for the freakin' expensive MacBook Air, so I guess we will see.

My guess is the iPhone SDK. Apple even announced it would be released at the end of Feb, and the reports that it is delayed aren't necessarily credible.

All that sounds very likely and exciting, and I agree with it; I'm just saying that we should also have the option to touch the actual screen if we wanted to.

Because they've got both feet firmly suck about 5 year behind. Case in point - combo drive on cheap MB and MM. Only once they've stopped shafting customers with that old p.o.s. can they move on and give their pro line ( supposedly the best platform for content creativity ) the optical drive it deserves.
Doug
Right... if Apple is putting a combo drive in their cheapest notebook, they're shafting customers with some old p.o.s., but if other vendors are selling notebooks in the same price range that have any or all of:
Pentium or Celeron processor
only 100mbps Ethernet
no digital video port
a crappy headphone port (e.g. hissing or twittering)
no IEEE 1394 aka FireWire at all, and even if, one without power pins
then it's business as usual. Not to mention the operating system. Even the Windows acolytes among my coworkers constantly complain about Vista, if they are using it at all.

Because about 4 years ago I sold my soul to apple. Oh, and because its not a laptop, so I don't mind touching its screen. Can you imagine how obnoxious it would be to be typing on the keyboard and then have to reach up and point at the screen and then rest your hands back on the keyboard. Nope. Not for me. But sure, compare it to an iPhone all you want.

Gotta love posts like this. I'm not sure why you think Apple can make the MBP any smaller than it is now, especially considering the heat issues that still exist in the current form factor.
They have access to the exact same technology as they have for the last year or two. HDD's have not gotten any smaller (unless you count the SLOW 1.8 drives), DVD drives have not gotten any smaller, the SR logic board isn't getting any smaller. Same size GPU, same size RAM, etc.
The *only* place to shrink the current MBP is possibly in the screen. The LED screens are slimmer than the older ones, slightly, with the MBA screen being a prime example. If the case gets revised, it will happen at or after Montevina's release, as that offers a potentially smaller package, and I suspect you won't see a whole new design even then.

fine, then fiberglass or something. enough already.
haha, good luck saving weight with fibreglass. Also, you'd have a helluva lot of trouble actually using the screen (as you wouldn't be able to actually see it). :D
Am I the only one hoping for a carbon fiber case?

They actually used a CF-frame in the tibook (under the white border).
CF is not that expensive – especially if made in sheets.

LOL. Actually, and honestly, NO. I would get the new Newton if I want that. What I want is the laptop with the Multi-Touch tactile surface.
The laptop you want will be out this year. The laptop I want will be out in my dreams tonight :)

Hopefully they'll update the Mini, which has to be worst rip-off i've ever seen in a computer. $649 CDN for something that doesn't even come with a keyboard and mouse, let alone a standard DVD burner?
For what it's worth, I just got a 2 Ghz Pentium Dual Core, 2 GBs ram and 19 inch LCD for $599 from Dell, and say what you want but its waay faster than a mini.
/end rant
Don't forget about the OS you'll be getting from Dell ;)

In my experience the MB / MBA Keyboards are very much like the current Apple Keyboard. Thin buttons, very laptop-like whereas the MBP keyboard feels more like a professional office keyboard a la Logitech. If you'd close youre eyes you wouldn't notice you were typing on a laptop :)
I know what you are saying, but people are arguing that this style keyboard isnt very 'pro' - even tho the most 'pro' computer Apple builds (Mac Pro) comes with this style keyboard!
I'll bet that when the MBP gets a complete overhaul, the keyborad will be the same a the MB / MBA keyboard. They wont have a completely different style keyboard for 1 pro model, and not for another!

You can't seriously compare touching a painting and touching a glass screen.
You can wipe away the small fingerprints on a glass screen in a sec to look new again. On a painting? Yikes!
Ok glass yes. But a glass screen on a laptop is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. Can you say cracks, and breaking??? It is NOT going to happen in an Apple Laptop. It will be the freaking Newton. Isn't that good enough for you??? lol. Have you even read what Apple is planning with all the alterable tactile feedback in the Multi-Touch surface they are patenting??? I would WAY rather have that than some impractical touch screen on a laptop with a keyboard any day!

Sarcastic *******?? hello?? the LED screen is already thinner and available. believe me, they can improve what we have by now.
And that would save like what, maybe one or one and a half millimeters? (0.04-0.06 inches for the metrically challenged.)
More importantly, it most likely wouldn't noticeably reduce weight.

You do know George Bush, right? ;)
OH NO YOU DIDN"T!!!!! ;) :D
I get what you are saying. But to Arn's credit, I would consider him "well connected" and you've got to admit he's got a good track record...

A glass-type material that weighs less than glass is all i meant.

Either way, it's just depend on what you are used to. So I guess you are right and Apple will indeed start using the very same keyboard.

You are so damn right! I mean every one knows now that blu ray won the game! So noone has to worry. Just put it in the new MBP.

I registered explicitly to say thank god someone here has a clue on multi-touch implementation (not a multi-touch trackpad that does gestural recognition, which is then translated into mouse/keyboard shortcuts).
It's a long time away people, those beautiful multi-touch implementations you see from people like Jeff Han etc are built on the software's understanding of multiple XY input interaction points. OS X hasn't even got a shred of that right now, let alone 3rd party software that has any capacity to understand that kind of input.

Apple can definitely deliver a better MBP in every way by now and if you don't believe that then you're a moron.

True, I just think that if he was completely sure that Time Capsule wasn't going to be released on time, the story on page 1 would be something more like "Time Capsule delayed due to..." instead of "There might be a product release this week, but we're not sure, if there is, it might be this or this, but we're not sure..."
Just seems like a slow day to me :)

I hope they don't make the MBP any thinner than it is. Apple is starting to turn into anorexia
