View Full Version : MacBook Pro Won't Wake from Sleep

My 15'' 2.4ghz MacBook Pro will only wake up from sleep about 50% of the time. I have tried waiting for several minutes, but the only solution seems to be holding down the power button, and then restarting. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

Occasionally when I put my MacBook Pro to sleep it won't wake properly. The computer starts up but the screen doesn't show anything. Sometimes if I wait a long time it will turn on or if I unplug the power cord but other times I am forced to hold the power button down and reboot the machine. Has anyone experienced this/know a fix? Thanks.
I'm running Leopard 10.5.2 on a MBP SR by the way.

try downloading the latest keyboard update. They may fix it.
smc and pram reset may help.
if all else fails try an archive and install.

Ive had this issue as well. I just downloaded the firm wear update and tested it twice, still not responsive on the first keystroke.

Hey guys. I had this problem, may still.... but it's gone for now. Mine would be either a dark screen, or a screen filled with static. I could only hard restart with the power button.
I have a stock 2.2 MBP running 10.5.2 fully updated.
After searching all over the intarwebs, I found two possibilities:
Safe Sleep:
I found an article, can't remember where, that explained how to use Terminal to turn off Safe Sleep, which I thought worked for a bit... but didn't prove to be a permenent fix.
iStat:
I imported my data from another machine when I got it. I had iStat installed on the other computer and so it was transferred over.
I uninstalled it, and it hasn't happened again.
Good luck! I know it sucks!!!

Same here. MBP SR 2.2 with 10.5.2 and Keyboard update.
I think this has something to do with either the 10.5.2 or recent keyboard update. I've never had this until very recently. I'm leaning towards the keyboard update
On mine though it only happens when I try to wake the laptop from sleep when not plugged in.
I'm going to uninstall iStat and see if I notice a change. I'll report my findings here.

I am having issues restarting (computer is on but unresponsive, have to hold button or remove battery and restart), where I get a panic notice every time I reboot.
I think the updates that came out were a little premature. There will probably be another fix for the laptops really soon. I hope...

Strike my last comment.
I just lost data, when my MBP wouldn't wake from sleep....
UGH.
Have any of you contacted Apple?
I'm wondering what my options are.
I don't like the feeling of dropping a serious amount of cash on a non-working laptop, or a laptop that can't sleep, more accurately.

I had the same problem. I'm almost 100% sure it is the istat Pro widget. You can either remove it completely or just disable the "Network" section. It was an instant cure for me. My MBP now sleeps and wakes normally.

I have the exact same problem.
Open the lid on my C2D MacBook Pro to wake it. The machine wake up, but the screen stay black. In 4 out of 5 times I have to hard reset (push and hold the power button).

Update...
I entered this command at the terminal to change the safesleep mode to 0, and I haven't had the same problem so far....
This command allows you to see what mode you are in...
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
This command changes it to NO SafeSleep
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
Here's hoping!!!

I've had my MBP since last October, and only experienced this a handful of times. But recently, about 80% of the time when I open my MBP it won't wake up, and have to do a hard restart. The best I can narrow it down, the timing of the issue corresponds with the keyboard update. A solution would be wonderful.

I just got a 23" Apple Cinema Display today. I'm trying to sort it out with my MBP 2.2 in "clamshell" mode, but it doesn't seem to work!
I close the MBP after they're both in mirror mode, then try and press a key on the (external) keyboard, move/click the mouse, press the ACD power button, but only rarely does it wake the MBP up. It often just ignores it, but sometimes works. Seems a bit hit and miss!
Can anyone help?

MBP 2.3 17" has a problem when starting or waking. I just upgraded from 10.4.11 and never had this problem. Recently upgraded to 10.5.0 and then immediately to 10.5.2. Installed the updated graphics software and the keyboard software update. My issue is intermittent waking or start up with a black screen. I can use the "F2" key to enable the screen to brighten up and it does. Works fine otherwise. This is the only issue and I'd like some input.

I've been having the same problem with my MBP so I googled it and found this article http://www.silvermac.com/2006/how-to-save-your-macbook-pro-hard-drive/ Not sure if this is why I'm having the problem, but I am a student and use my MBP to take notes so usually, as soon as class ends I shut the lid and put it in its travel case. I've also reset the PRAM and disabled the network section of iStat Pro. Hopefully I won't have this problem anymore.

MBP 2.2, 160GB, 10.5.2
My MBP is having similar problems - but only since the most recent update. As I recall, it was the keyboard update (which ironically was supposed to FIX a wake-up problem), and graphics update. It seems to fail to wake up whenever there is wrinkle in the wake up process - ie lid opens and closes again before fully waking, usb activity (from a mouse or unpluging the hub) causes it to come out of sleep etc. It "wakes" to a black screen, and F2 does nothing to brighten it up - unlike a previous post. I end up having to hold the power button down to shut it off and then re-boot.  Seems to wake ok if I close the lid and am careful to not move the mouse, unplug the hub (when will they add more USB ports to this thing anyway!), or re-open the lid before it is fully asleep - ie blinking light (which takes about 20 sec or so)
Might try disabling safe-sleep, since I never let the batt get to 0% anyway, and I don't leave apps open either - so lost data isn't really a risk for me.
I agree with some previous posters that it definitely seems to have something to do with the most recent keyboard update:( - I did not have this problem before!

disabled safesleep - nicely speeds up sleeping and waking, but hasn't fixed the wake to black screen. I think I have narrowed the occurrence down to a specific instance - if anything causes the MBP to wake up while the lid is closed, (usually usb activity - though opening and re-closing the lid before it is fully awake does the same thing) then it seems to hang in the wake up process - it's not asleep (indicator light is out), but not fully awake (screen is black). If I move the mouse while the lid is closed, the indicator light goes out and the apple logo lights up - evidence of it waking up, so then I open the screen and for a fleeting second I see the login / password screen - just before black. If I don't open it right away, it appears to go back to sleep mode, so then I open the lid and still - black screen. Interestingly, it is a dark black screen - powered on but black - not the greenish tinted black you see when the power is off. F2 has no effect, and no amount of waiting or keypressing gets past it - have to hard re-boot. Basically, it seems that a closed MBP has to be woke up only by opening the lid - and it cannot be disturbed while doing so. If it is asleep with the lid already open, any normal waking action is fine. Kinda frustrating. APPLE? LISTENING? NEW UPDATE TO FIX THIS?? (especially since it seems their last update caused it!!)
(note - I am going to try disabling the password on wake - see if that has any effect - EDIT - no effect.)

Also having the same issue. It used to only be occasionally, but now it's happening more than 95% of the time I put it to sleep! No one I've read about seems to have it happening this often. This began only a few days ago, I'm not sure when I installed the keyboard update, is there some way to check? I reset the power manager, and the PRAM. That didn't help. I disconnected it from everything, including the airport and that didn't help. I called apple, of course, they didn't help. I just disabled iStat Pro and changed my hibernate mode to 0. Hopefully that will help. It really bothers me to do the hard restart, let alone multiple times a day. I know it's waking up, because I can hear adium sign in, and it chime if I have email, and the keyboard will light up, but nothing from the screen. Grrr, if this doesn't fix it I'm going to hurl the thing at the wall. I live two hours away from an apple store (my college town doesn't have one, good old Savannah, GA) and I won't be going home (where there is an apple store) for two weeks. This of course happens just when I think everything is going well with my MBP, when I haven't had any devastating problems since last August. I'll let you know if it gets better.

Sounds pretty similar to my problem... everything seems to wake up except the screen stays black. It did it again this morning - without any usb interference - I opened the lid, and same as above - everything came up except the screen.

Yay, I'm not the only one who has this issue... but still, it sucks :-(
I can say that I don't think it was related to the keyboard firmware update. My MBP (Late 2007 2.4 SR) was doing this well before the keyboard update. It drives me crazy because I could never make it happen on demand.
I usually put my MBP to sleep and stuff it in my work bag. Most days, it doesn't come back out until I get back home - and when I go to wake it (with nothing plugged in) the majority of the time it never comes back.
Apple seriously needs to fix this crap  it's driving me insane.

Yikes! Sounds like a lot of MBP's out there with problems waking up from sleep mode. Makes me nervous for the new mbp I have on the way. I just sent back a refurb 2.4 sr mbp for the same reason. Straight out of the box, I would have to restart it after sleep mode 50% of the time. It is either the RAM or a kernal panic issue... They declared my machine DOA and I was allowed to send it back for a new penryn machine. So annoying though, I feel your pain.

UPDATE: Removing iStat Pro and changing the hibernation mode didn't help. I just had to restart the computer. I forgot to mention before that a hardware test came back clean. Although, since so many people are having this issue it seems to be software. I'm really frustrated that I have to do this numerous times a day. Apple should really fix the problems with their established machines before they keep releasing new computers. Does anybody have any ideas other than reinstalling OS X, or committing surgery?
P.S. This is my second Macbook Pro. The replaced my original (that was a refurb) because straight out of the box it would have kernel panics for no reason and programs would constantly quit unexpectedly. They had to replace my logic board twice and my RAM before they realized maybe they should just give me a new one. For someone who just made the switch from PC with this machine, they aren't doing a good job of proving to me to stay with them.

I've been having this exact same issue, but I've had it get even worse for a couple instances. The MacBook Pro was put to sleep with a full battery, I tried to wake it up an hour later only to find that it was very hot to the touch at 180F (checked with several programs) and the battery was depleted to 20% and it shut down on it's own. It happened again yesterday where it was very hot to the touch, shut down (on it's own again), and batter significantly depleted.
I'm really not very impressed with Apple right now, first my original MacBook Pro has a lot of serious issues, then my replacement has a lot of serious issues. This is getting rather ridiculous, as I have a total of 9 serious issues.

I have this problem as well...no istat pro or anything...
Yesterday I tried plugging in an external monitor when it was the macbook was in its black screen state. After pressing the screen mirroring button on the keyboard I got my LCD back on! I then disconnected the external monitor and was back in business.
I think this indicates a serious issue Apple needs to deal with. I have greatly alleviated this problem previously by resetting the power management chip following apples advice in a recent bulletin.( there is a link to that elsewhere in the forum, sorry.)
Still the problem persists but this seems to be a workaround. It may even work without another monitor and with the adapter alone, but I cant confirm that.

I guess I might as well reinstall OS X and not install the keyboard or graphics update, since they've been hinted at being a cause. Until of course, apple fixes the problem. I've restarted twice today so far. It's ridiculous. How do people know that apple is doing something? Have they read it somewhere, or just spoken to someone? I want to read something posted by apple that they know of and are working on the issue.

I have this problem too, and it seems like it's getting worse. Yesterday I also had this problem, and this morning too! It's very frustrating, because my four-year old PB never had this issue, yet my relatively new MBP does. I was hoping that the keyboard software update would fix things, but it clearly hasn't, and I'm relieved that I'm the only one with this problem. Sometimes it wakes up on its own after a while; today I had to reboot.
Is iStat (Pro) really partly the culprit behind this?

Yeah, removing iStat didn't fix it for me. I don't use any bluetooth devices and my bluetooth is always off so that's not it for me. Some people says it's when connecting to their airport. Well, disconnecting didn't fix that for me either. Changing my sleep mode didn't work. Manually putting it to sleep didn't work. Disconnecting everything but the power cord didn't work. Lots of people are finding that different things work for them. Also, some people are having this problem under slightly different circumstances. Some people have it only when they have another monitor attached, etc. Nor is that the case for me.

Also... seems apple knows there is an issue...
Apple confirms "closed-lid" issue is a known bug
Wednesday, February 20th
Apple has confirmed as a known issue a problem in which external displays do not come on at all (or come on briefly after which the system goes back to sleep) while the notebook's lid is closed and will not wake up when keys on an external keyboard or buttons on an external mouse are pressed. The problem materialized for a number of users who have applied the recent Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates.
This issue could also manifest as disabling of certain external displays, missing display resolutions and more.
Typical reports of the problem:
* "When I wake my MacBook Pro in closed-lid mode it shows the desktop picture on the external screen and then goes right back to sleep. If I then wake it again, the same thing will happen all over again."
* "Prior to updating, I had no problem. I would routinely connect the Cinema display to my MacBook Pro while the MBP was asleep. I would wake it by touching a key on the attached keyboard. As expected, the Cinema display would fire up, the display in the MBP would turn off, and the computer would stay on. Now, when I try to do this, the MBP wakes up briefly, the Cinema display comes on, but then the MBP goes back to sleep. The problem started right after I installed 10.5.2."
* "Since installing the latest update I'm also experiencing wake from sleep problems on my dual 1.0 ghz MDD Mac with a gForce Ti video card. We have 2 monitors hooked up to it. One an Apple display with ADC connection and one generic CRT. Often we'll work with the CRT off and we've found if we turn on the CRT after the wake from sleep problem the CRT is now the only functional display and the menu bar has migrated there."
Apple is now sending the following reply to customers reporting this problem:
"After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering."
Temporary fix (as noted earlier today) Since this problem generally occurs on notebooks with external displays, one workaround involves the following: Press the power button on your Mac (with external display connected) then immediately shut the lid. Your Mac will continue booting and the external display should show the proper resolutions.
That workaround is fine for booting up with an external display, but I don't have an external display, and my MBP boots fine. It just doesn't wake up properly - like everyone else in this thread - wakes to black screen on the built in LCD... hopefully whatever they come up with will fix the problem regardless of the display config.
FRUSTRATING.

I started getting this problem after the 10.5.2 update (and graphics update 1.0, and keyboard update). Randomly, the machine never seems to wake up from sleep. Sometimes I will get a brief login window, but it never lasts long enough to complete my password...then black.
Sometimes opening and closing the lid fixes it; other times I have to hard reboot. Once it even locked my WD MyBook Studio in sleep mode causing me to power it off too.
I do not have an external display nor am I running iStat.
Bummer, my MBP 2.4 Santa Rosa has been perfect up until this.

Why is this happening to so many people? I never can tell if my MBP is going to wake or not. It picks and chooses and there doesn't seem to be a pattern.
How/when is Apple going to address this? :(

I had the same problem and removed the iStat widget and things got much better.
Now if I sleep the MBP by just closing the lid, it awakens immediately when I open it. If I sleep it with the drop down menu, you can only awaken it by pushing on the power key until it beeps and it awakens. Before I removed iStat, if you pushed the power key it caused a force quit and the computer would reboot.

I've got this problem too, and lately it's been pretty frustrating.
Also, I think I've got one of the defective screens in my MBP. I may just be paranoid, but I think I have the bottom third yellowing issue. Also, the computer's six months old, but it already has a stuck pixel.
I should give Apple a call. Maybe I can convince them to exchange it for a new Penryn MBP. Mwah ha ha.

deep sleep seems to work for me, haven't bothered with taking out iSat since it seems to be having mixed results. If it does wake to a black screen, I've found that pushing the power button once, then "enter" does a proper shutdown, then press power again to re-start. When it wakes to a black screen, the computer is still functioning, just the screen is black - so if you can envision what is happening when you push buttons, keystrokes can be used to control it - just have to know exactly what to push and in what order, since you can't actually see what you're doing. I am suspecting that it has something do do with multiple monitor support... and probably came with the graphics update. Has anyone installed 10.5.2 but NOT the graphics update? I see some are having good luck stopping the updates at 10.5.1...
I really hope apple is working on a solution that works...

did you fully update your fresh install with the 10.5.3 and graphics update? Some people seem to have good luck with 10.5.2, and to be honest, I really didn't have any problems before the .3 update... so I might be embarking on that adventure myself if I get really frustrated or Apple doesn't come up with a fix. Have to do a backup first... uugh.

Having the same problem.
When my MBP wakes, all I get is the black screen. (This is not an issue with an external monitor, no bluetooth components, just the MBP.) I am able to get it to respond eventually by pressing the F1 and F2 keys a few times, moving the mouse around, clicking the mouse and pressing ENTER. I have never been forced to shutdown and reboot the MBP, although sometimes it feels like that would be easier.
I already have SafeSleep turned off, I have never had iStat installed. I do have 10.5.2 with the keyboard update.

I was having this issue (as stated in my previous post in this thread), I called AppleCare regarding it and they told me to do an erase and install. After the erase and install, I used the computer over the weekend and the issue was still prevalent over that course of time. So after another call to Apple they replaced my computer and I got a new Penryn MacBook Pro. For now I'm a happy camper :)

whether you go to a apple store or call apple care, they'll blame the issue to the 10.5.2 graphics update.

One thing I probably should've mentioned though, is that the MacBook Pro that they replaced was a replacement. In other words they replaced the original MacBook Pro with the SR one and then replaced the SR one with the Penryn one. And they had my pack up the MacBook Pro in the original box and send it to their depot in Northern California. As soon as it was shipped they shipped the replacement and it got to me in a day. (It was a stock MacBook Pro)

I've been using that Deep Sleep widget and it seems to be working alright. Granted it is waaaaaay too slow for a permanent fix.
I think my Macbook Pro has just been trying to spite me. It seems like it wakes fine when I'm doing casual stuff, but every time I needed it for something important, like taking it out at a meeting, it wouldn't turn on the screen and I would have to restart it.
When apple tells people that its the graphics update, or 10.5.2, are they just like "Well I guess it sucks to be you"? Or is there actually something in the works to fix this? Being able to sleep/wake a computer seems like a fairly major feature.
I have to admit, while I love my mac in general way more than I did my PCs (I switched about a year ago), I could always come up with some ridiculous solution to the problems I had on the PC. On the mac, I feel like sometimes you're just like "Well Ok. I guess that doesn't work. Hopefully it will someday."

Also, when you do a fresh install of Leopard, do you need to backup your stuff first or does it not affect it?

I've had one SR MBP replaced already... due to pixel issues. The last few times I've put my MBP to sleep it seems to be ok, but if it re-surfaces again replacying it with a Penryn would be cool - if for nothing else than to get the 200GB hard drive and the 256MB vid card. Interesting - would like to know if this solution continues to work. Sometimes mine wakes fine for a day or two (or even 3), then hangs again. Still seems to be the issue of the display not coming to life. It's pretty obvious that the desktop is back there, because I can type my password, hit enter, then power button once, then enter... and voila - it shuts down. So the computer is awake, but it's almost as if it is trying to send the video to a different display - or as if it is stuck on minimum brightness. Unfortunately F2 does nothing to bring it back. I just purchased my applecare... am waiting for that to arrive and then activate it before I call Apple again. It might be all in my head, but applecare members seem to get better phone service from Apple...
A solution from Apple in the meantime would be nice...

This is getting ridiculous; it's happening to me on an almost every-other-day basis. Eventually, when it does decide to wake itself up from deep sleep, the mouse is so hyper sensitive that I end up having to reboot the entire system.
Unfortunately, I'm missing my old PB even more. At least that never happened to me (and I used iStat Pro too)

today some kid came up to me and complemented me on my mbp he had one too, so i asked him if the screen has ever turned black when waking up from sleep, and he said yes.
this is somewhat of a big deal now.
i mean we are at 111 posts and a lot of people have this problem.

Quick question: what was wrong with your original macbook?
Because I just got off the phone with Apple and they refused to send me a new Penryn. They wanted me to part ways with my computer (which is vital for school) for 3 weeks.

So far the only thing I've done is disable all my dashboard widgets... and no more sleep problems.
This is stupid!
We shouldn't have to do all this stuff, especially something that is a convenience that Macs allow us, just so that our computers will wake from sleep. They should be doing this on their own; we shouldn't have to give up things in order for it to work.
When is Apple going to address this?
I'm such a pushover. I feel like I'm going to take it to the Apple store next week and they're just going to be like, "Welp, try this and this and this and this" and I'll just eventually give up because it's a headache.

I had upwards of 10 issues, and The penryn MacBook Pro was not just a replacement, it was a replacement for a replacement. The first MacBook Pro went in for repair twice, the second taking 3 times as long as they stated it should (just shy of a month) and it came back in very bad condition with dents and numerous scratches. I had about the same amount of issues with the second MacBook Pro, a santa rosa one, so they decided to give me a replacement. My MacBook Pro is also vital for school and also work.

I reset the P-RAM as someone suggested in an earlier post. So far it seems to have worked, except once. I don't know if anything was different that one time. But I would recommend trying it.

So - now mine has slept for an extended period, waken several times properly, but now I have that mouse thing. Actually it's just slow to respond with everything. Typing is slow to respond and the mouse hops across the screen instead of moving smoothly. It's acting like a very low memory problem. EDIT - slept & woke it again, that time it was completely unusable. Mouse would hardly move at all, move the wrong way... No USB plugged in, just the MBP all by itself. I don't know if this is a different issue, (unrelated memory leak or processor slow-down) or if it's related to the sleep issue. It seems to surface for people after waking from sleep though, and it is REALLY ANNOYING.
I will definitely be calling Applecare once I get mine activated. If this MBP has two unrelated issues, I'd kinda like it to be replaced. END EDIT
As for the waking, I've tried most of the solutions everyone else has tried, except for the re-install, and have only mixed success. It still seems to be that anytime the wake process is interrupted in any way, (usb activity, lid re-closes before fully awake... yada yada) the screen stays black. This thing with the mouse and typing now is really annoying - I have to reboot to fix it.
Hopefully Apple comes up with a fix that works soon!

What happened - did everyone suddenly find a solution? Posts have suddenly dried up - I know the issue is pretty hashed to death and well documented, maybe it's clearing up?
I know as long as I'm careful how I sleep and wake my MBP it seems to be ok. I've heard of similar problems on other macs with Leopard, I am considering a re-install, but back to Tiger - might not even put Leopard back on until it's a bit more mature.

Wow, this is a huge problem but I'm glad to see I've got company. What do you do that's "careful" that makes it ok? I seemed to have better luck if I put my MBP to sleep from the menu and then I can wake it without the blank screen. However if the MBP sleeps overnight I still have the same problem.
All other techniques suggested here have not helped. Mac better get busy with that fix.

By make it sleep carefully, I mean make sure that the mouse is turned off first, don't do anything that could interrupt the sleep or wake process (re-open or re-close the lid before it's finished it's process, move or unplug a mouse or other USB etc). That sort of thing. I find that using the menu or the power button then "S" seems to be pretty reliable too. Haven't noticed a problem of not waking if it's asleep overnight myself, though others may have. I just know that my windows laptops were never this picky about sleeping, they always seemed much more predictable - if you re-opened a lid before it was fully asleep, it would just wake back up and vise-versa. I really am thinking of going back to Tiger. The archiving is what's holding me back though.
Good luck.

I had the same problem with my MBP 2.2 Inrel Core 2 Duo, 2GB, 667MHz DDR2. I did all tricks I could read in various forums. The solution was to adjust the sleep settings in System Preferences/Energy/Sleep: I have now both the display and processor inactivity time set at same. No problems since. I've been having the same problem with my MBP sometimes waking with a blank screen. In my case I found that when this happened I could attach my external monitor which would be active. The only way I could get the MBP screen to come back was to turn on mirroring and then turn it off which would seem to reset things. This behavior only showed up a month or so ago...
The other problem I've had ever since I bought the machine a year ago was that when the lid was closed it would sometimes wake when I would pick it up to move it. My assumption from reading forums is that this is due to the lid sensor being too sensitive. Anyway reading around I found out about the pmset terminal command for setting power management settings. Specifically turning off the lidwake feature means that I have to press a key after opening the lid to return from sleep.
After disabling lidwake, I have never had the blank screen on wake (about a week now). My theory, at least with my MBP, is that when I press the button to open the lid, it bounces up and down and maybe that is causing the lid switch to get confused. Don't know, just a theory, but it seems to be working for me right now...
Here is a page I found useful on the pmset command:

Hey - You've hit the nail on the head as far as I can tell... it definitely seems to be some sort of 'screen confusion' by the MBP. Exactly what part of the MBP is still a mystery - is it the graphics drivers? OSX? Hardware? I have the same issue with the "bouncing lid" phenomenon. For some reason, when it doesn't wake up just right, it seems to decide to send the display information to a screen that isn't attached. I haven't tried hooking up an external screen yet - but I think that might be the next order of business. Keep plugging away I guess - and hopefully Apple will come up with a solution that works.

ok people. i had this problem before and as you know it's annoying as hell. sometimes when i close my laptop and put it in my bag, it doesn't go to sleep at all. and of course when i arrive at work and open it for use, it sure is drained out.
so i did extensive research and found a very simple solution. it seems that the problem occurs when the lid is suddenly closed (like, too fast). so, everytime you close it, do it slowly and gently.
ever since i learnt that, i've never had this problem again. none.

Hi there!
I have the strong feeling that the (amount of) memory might be the problem.
Please tell me if you see any similarities or differences in your setup.
1) Problem description
----------------------
Does not always wake up from sleep. In about 30% of all tries the screen goes on, but only shows black. The optical drive does not generate noise as it does before correct sleep resumes. The only help is resetting the computer by pressing the power button several seconds. The problem cannot be cured by removing iStat Pro, resetting battery components, switching sleep mode or doing other voodoo described in this thread. I see no relation in terms of "time spent in sleep mode", temperature, programs running, time of day, ...
2) Hardware
------------
Most recent Macbook (introduced a few weeks ago) with 45nm processor. This series is capable of using 4 GByte of memory (one can configure that much in the Apple store), whereas some older Macbooks only can use about 3,2 GByte when inserting 4 GByte.
3) Memory
---------
No problem (so far) with 2x 512 MByte I got from Apple.
No problem (so far) with 1x 2048 MByte (details below).
Problem as described above with 2x 2048 MByte (details below).
The 2048 MByte memory is Corsair Valueselect PC5300, CL5, "256 x 64". I count 8 chips on each side.
Please tell me what kind of memory modules you use. Perhaps the number of chips, doublesidedness or something alike causes the problem.
PS: Please excuse me to post here although I only have a Macbook. I guess the problem is caused by the same thing in both Macbook and Macbook Pro.
Thanks,
Carsten

Well - seems that on page 6 of this very long thread, the issue seems to be focused on the opening and closing of the lid. I've put this command through on terminal: sudo pmset lidwake 0 and so far it seems to be working fine. In fact, so far it has not hung up when waking yet. I've also updated iSat pro with the new version a couple days later, but I think the key was that lidwake command. It really isn't any hassle - still sleeps when closing the lid, just have to tap the space bar (or any key) after opening to wake it up.
I did this a few days ago, and so far so good.:)

According to your personal experience, it may have something to do with the amount of memory - but so far most people are having the problem with stock macbook pros with 2GB. The fact that you have a macbook might be a factor, I have no idea. As I just posted - it seems to have more to do with the lid.

I was having this problem for a week now but I think I got it fixed now.
In the system preferences, I noticed 'Start Screen Saver' time is set longer than 'Put the display(s) to sleep....' so I changed the screen saver time to be shorter than 'Put the display(s) to sleep' so hopefully, this sleep problem is fixed.
I have just tested it (only a couple of mins sleep) and it seemed to work. See how it goes on.

Mine is 2.2 Ghz SR laptop with 4 GB RAM.It has worked!
I have left mine in sleep mode for much longer time, both times with opened and closed lid. So the problem must have caused by the length of time sets longer than the time to put the display to sleep.

I certainly hope Apple is working on this. I have a SR MacBook Pro (base configuration) running 10.5.2 and all the updates. No iStat and using sleep mode 0. It doesn't matter if everything or nothing is connected to the computer. It also seems to get worse if I sleep it overnight of for more than a couple of hours.
The computer will wake up and be running but the screen shows nothing. I have since disabled "require a password to wake this computer from sleep" so I can just hit the power button and return to shut the computer down if I need to.
I haven't purchased AppleCare yet but the computer more than three months old so I can't use the very generous 90 days of phone support. I guess when school ends for the semester I will head over to an Apple store if it hasn't been fixed.
This really has me frustrated that such a basic function of a computer is giving everyone so much trouble.

So plenty of people are saying that apple knows about the issue and is working on a software update - but the last two times I've applied updates I've ended up with more problems than before. First time was this screen/sleep issue which seems to be centered on what display the MBP thinks is attached and something to do with the lid opening / closing. The other issue was I think a security update that I just recently applied, and now everytime I boot up I get 2 or 3 different messages having to do with allowing certain applications to accept incoming connections. If I select no, then my internet and mail doesn't work. So I pick yes... it's something like configd, mdnsresponder and one other one. I'm also getting more and more freeze ups lately. I am SERIOUSLY thinking of going back to Tiger. This is nuts. It's a software problem alright - and I am starting to think that Leopard is as bad as MS's Vista. Yikes
The only thing that has made ANY improvement to the sleep issue was the lidwake = 0 command, and though it has mad a big improvement for me, it has not been 100%. USB activity will still screw it up. And now I have the extra boot-up messages........ it just goes on and on.

You have a warning note under the slider:

Slide the time to the minimum and the warning disappeared.

that really doesn't do anything substantial, as when the display turns off the screensaver turns off, so if its off to begin with it will not turn on.
as stated, there is no fix.

This is not a constant fix but you can do this from time to time (e.g. make a script that is executed once every month or so) until there's an official fix. Delete these 3 files from your system:
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
sudo rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
Don't forget you have to have root priviledge to do this. After that do a restart. OSX will automatically recreate these files so you cannot do any damage to your system. For me this fixed my problems with my MBP not waking from sleep.

Apple Seeds First Mac OS X 10.5.3 (9d10) Version
Friday March 28, 2008 09:47 PM EST
Written by Arnold Kim
Apple issued the first Mac OS X 10.5.3 seed (9d10) to developers yesterday. The latest update to Apple's Mac OS X Leopard addresses dozens of outstanding issues.
Fixes range from Dashboard, Parental Controls, iCal Synchronization, memory leaks and stability issues. All in all, 75 distinct bug fixes are listed in the accompanying seed notes.
A few known issues remain, and Apple typically seeds a number of developer builds for testing before releasing the final update to customers. While these point releases generally provide bug and stability fixes only, the 10.5.2 seed also addressed some user interface complaints. The current version of Mac OS X (10.5.2) was released in February 2008.

Yeah, I'm not saying this is the root cause, but (at least for me) it induces the problem 100% of the time. So at least you can convince the genius bar you aren't crazy and theoretically we have a way to test potential fixes that doesn't take days of waiting.

Forgive my ignorance, but do you HAVE to have it sleep? I mean, cant you just turn the Sleep option OFF? Windows has a 'Hibernation" feature that I dont enable. I dont have my MBP yet, picking it up on the 25th..so be gentle :)

Generally, I close every program that don't usually start up from a fresh boot-up before I put the laptop to sleep. I think external devices causes this issue more often than not.
Anyway, I would highly suggest trying to close every application running before putting it to sleep. If that still doesn't help, then you should try to run every program one at a time and put it to sleep. At least the third party softwares. Basically, you run it, then you close the program and then put the laptop to sleep. You keep doing this until you find a problem. If you do find a problem, then it could be that program is causing a memory leak. From what I remember reading, high memory activity can cause the Mac from waking up.
I hope this helps in some way.

There are some apps you can download, but without that, there's no option not to make it slep when you close it. But I like to put mine to sleep to save its hard drive/display.

Went to see my folks for the weekend. Didn't bring any USB devices. Never had any problems waking my MBP from sleep. Aha!
Seems when I have my USB mouse connected that's when my MBP wakes up with the blank screen. If I use any USB devices I make sure to disconnect them before I put my MBP to sleep. As an added precaution I initiate sleep from the menu before closing the lid.
Hope this helps someone. Hope that update comes soon.

My Powerbook G4 1.3ghz has always had this (or very similar) problem. It often happens and always overnight. If I semi-close the computer (not clicking it shut but leaving it slightly ajar), when I return to it in the morning it will often (but not always) be "frozen" in sleep with a black screen. I have to then reboot via the power button to get it going again. Took a while to realize that the semi-closed state was a common denominator here.
Seems odd that people are describing something somewhat similar with the Macbook Pros as new problem, when I can pretty easily duplicate more or less the same thing with my old Powerbook.

Also I noticed that when the MBP does that wake/sleep thing with the lid closed, there's a curious entry in the system.log that isn't there on a normal sleep/wake:
ScreenSaverEngine[453] Screen saver is running in blackout mode. That sure sounds interesting.
Quote is from another thread... but that log entry makes sense with what we're seeing, and might indicate why some have had success by adjusting their screensaver and sleep times in system pref.
I haven't checked my own system log - but when I get some more time - I think I'll do that. See just what is going on under that dark screen! ;)

I think your semi-closed lid was probably confusing your PB in the same way that USB activity or other interferences are confusing the MBPs. Leopard (10.5.2 in particular) also seems to have something to do with several very frustrating gremilns being discussed right now - this being only one of them.

My old Powerbook had the same sleep problem that was mentioned here. I read somewhere an easy fix:
1. When you put the computer to sleep, do so by way of the finder (i.e. don't just close the lid).
2. When the screen goes dark, wait until the sleep light starts pulsating before you actually close the lid. Sometimes it takes awhile before it really shuts down. I've noticed if you close the lid during that time, it instantly shuts down (I don't know what the processor is doing but closing the lid before it's finished making its bed seems to annoy it).
3. And for some reason, this seems to be an important one. Always wake the computer up in the exact same configuration it was in when it went to sleep, i.e. if you put it to sleep with the power cord attached, make sure the cord is attached when you wake it up (or vice versa). And the same goes with any cables. As a rule, I detach everything before putting it to sleep.
Don't know if this will help with the MacBook Pro.

I just wait the minute as my computer loads all the data it has cached in deep sleep back into RAM and everything works. Sure it looks like the computer doesn't wake up immediately, but just take a break or something and the computer will wake up.

Somehow, I happened upon a thread that said if you turn off the "Network" portion on iStat the problem would be solved.
I did that, and now, months later, no issues.

bummer - I was really hoping that would hold the answer. I will wait - maybe - until 5.3 comes out, and if the combination of this firmware and 5.3 doesn't fix it, I am going to call Applecare for sure. At least one person has posted that their Penryn does not have the sleep/wake issue. Anybody out there confirm or dispel this? Yeah, they haven't learned much over the past several months. That is what I was told to do back in November when this all started. That didn't work neither did any of the "fixes" Applecare had for me over the next month or so. Finally got a new machine, only to have it do the same things until I disable the networking portion of iStat.
Odd thing is that the "fix" doesn't seem to be the same for every instance. The iStat worked for me, but may(probably) won't work for all.

To be clear(er), SystemProfiler says i now have "Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07", on a 2.2 GHz MBP, 15".

BTW, can someone enlighten me to (the difference between) "SantaRosa" and "Penryn".

I just wait the minute as my computer loads all the data it has cached in deep sleep back into RAM and everything works. Sure it looks like the computer doesn't wake up immediately, but just take a break or something and the computer will wake up.
doesn't work for me either

So, I'm running on a MacBook Pro with Boot ROM version ending in B05, just had the issue where the system refused to come out of sleep -- the only way I could get my screen to turn back on was with the DVI-to-VGA adapter, and then it was a black screen with a mouse pointer.
I've noticed something similar with all of the occurrences I had with this so far... this error is in the Console at the time it happens originally:
Apr 12 23:40:57 -macbook-pro kernel[0]: NVDA::setPowerState(0x46e7800, 0 -> 2) timed out after 45124 ms

Hmm. That is interesting. So if there is an error message, then there should be a way to fix the problem.
My MBP has the same Boot ROM as you... 0070.B05, and it says it does not need the firmware update.
I've had the same experience with the DVI adapter too... if you hook up an external display, you can get it to work that way too - and you can see everything you are supposed to see. So it seems that there is some sort of hangup with the MBP telling the graphics card to change it's power state (turn on I presume), and hooking up an external display helps it out of it's confusion.
I'll check my Console next time it happens and see what I get for messages.
UPDATE: So - I can duplicate the sleep problem pretty much at will by interrupting the sleep or wake process by closing or opening the lid too soon, and here is the message I get at the time of the stuck screen:
(Date & time) ScreenSaverEngine[1008] Screen Saver is running in blackout mode
I've seen other's report the same mesage.
I can type in my password, wait a second or two, push the power button... then R, and it re-boots. I have a disturbing number of error messages in boot up as well... but that is another topic. None that I see seem to have anything to do with graphics or screen savers or sleep... mostly to do with software I've installed and un-installed - so obviously there are some leftover bits. Have to work on that....

The problem got bad enough that I had to install Mac OS X Tiger on my MacBook Pro until I have time to sit down and figure out what the heck is going on with Leopard, I don't know if I'm going to wind up with 10.5.1 or what. Maybe I'll just stay on Tiger until 10.5.3 or 10.5.4 comes around, hopefully by then these annoying little problems will be ironed out.

So you did it, did you?
I've been seriously considering going back to tiger too. The only thing holding me back is the backup and saving of all my files and emails...
I just had a kernel panic and osx shut down when I tried to wake it. I plugged in a usb mouse and the power cord while it was asleep - and in the wake up process it woke and then went back to sleep when I entered the password, the second wake it hung - not to be recovered until I did a hard re-start. Bleh. I didn't have tiger long enough to know if there were any problems with it... but I'm pretty sure it wasn't this full of bugs.

Well - I did it too.
Did an erase and install, back to Tiger. Have tried to make it hang in the wake process, and so far it has woken up. One time I thought maybe it was stuck at the black screen, but I just closed the lid, waited a few seconds till it was asleep again, opened it and viola - back in business. Haven't had to re-set it yet. I'll post if I do.. but it most certainly seems to be a leopard (probably 5.2 and/or graphics update) problem.
I do have to get used to Tiger again - a few different ways of doing things - but it "JUST WORKS."
I find the current Mac commercial (with the therapist - it's not my fault) amusing. Since it is actually Leopard not playing nice with the MBP.... exactly opposite of what they are trying to get accross in the advertising. My Windows PCs have never had such a weird problem... XP Home on a P4 3.0... runs great.
Oddly enough, XP Runs better on my MBP than Leopard does right now. The only thing I can't do in Windows on the mbp is control the fan speeds - if I could do that without using OS X...... well I'll leave it there.

Hasn't fixed this issue for me. Just when I think it went away, it strikes again. I also never received the software update, but I heard it was only for certain processors. Not positive on any of this, just speaking from my personal experience. The problem still lingers, however, not as pertinent.

Hmm. That would be nice - I doubt they'll exchange mine - I've had it for about 6 months now... I'll try the firmware update, go back to leopard, and maybe even wait for 5.3... but if it still has the sleep problem after that, I will be calling applecare and asking for an exchange.

I've been having this problem for a while now, but tonight I'd previously enabled the 'Share Screen' and 'Connection' facilities in Leopard before putting the MacBook Pro to sleep. It wouldn't wake up, so I tried to share the screen from my iMac. On the 'shared screen' window I saw the 'screen unlock' request for my user name and password, even though the MacBook Pro screen was blacked out.
I found I could also remotely connect and extract the file I wanted from my MacBook onto the iMac. This shows that the disk, memory and processor of the MacBook were functioning OK and not in sleep mode. I suspect some graphics display software or firmware.

UUGGH! And I was hoping that this firmware was going to fix it. Some have reported that it did - but obviously if you're still having the problem... IT'S NOT FIXED YET APPLE!!! I've re-installed leopard again - but I am NOT updating it until I hear some good reports about 5.3. It was 5.2 and the graphics update that wrecked mine... so far with just 5.0 it is sleeping and waking just fine.

Hi - yes, as stated, do some research first before starting new threads - if you're having the same "wake to black screen" issue that is discussed at length on this thread, don't start a new one! It's well documented, and so far the ONLY definitive solution seems to be downgrading OS X to 10.4.11 or 10.5.0 by backing up your data and doing a full erase & re-install. Some have had luck with an archive and install... but not me. I went to Tiger first, confirmed that it did not have the issue, and am now running 10.5.0. I will NOT UPDATE leopard until I hear some good things about 10.5.3 after its release. It seems to be the 5.2 or the graphics update that triggered it for most.
I was hoping that the latest firmware would fix it - but by reports, some are still having the problem after updating. All the other ideas like remove iSat pro, reset the power management, other minor tweaks have had limited success.

I have had this problem and sort of found a fix.
Sometimes I would wake up in the morning to hear my MBP running, even though it was closed.
If I were to open it up, the screen would show nothing and the contrast adjustment buttons did nothing. Yet, sometimes I had an external display hooked in and turning that on revealed a desktop :)
So using the MBP mouse and keyboard I would go into System Preferences -> Displays and hit "Detect Displays". This solved my problem except when my external was not hooked in.
So a possible solution to this might be to make an applescript that will Detect Displays and then bind it to a shortcut that you can try when your MBP appears to not wake.

Interesting workaround - I've never made an applescript before... but the detect display's trick definitely seems to address the cause of the problem to begin with. I presume you're still having this problem even with the new firmware update?

The weird thing that I noticed is - if I leave it sit for a while - I mean like 4 or 5 minutes, sometimes the screen will turn back on all on its own. I've usually been impatient and do the shutdown trick, but the last few times I waited it out - and sure enough all but once it came back on.

I just let mine sit too and then it works eventually. I think it's just restoring data from disk to RAM from deep sleep.

I've had to do the whole unplug-remove battery-press power for 5 secs-boot up drill 8 times already the last two days. My laptop is always on the stand. Always powered (and with UPS). UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply - backup battery power when the power goes out. I had it for my old desktop, but went ahead and used it for my mbp since it also offers surge protection.
I was reseting the power because I figured that was "clearing" up the "bad sleep mode" it was going into. Just pulling the power and battery out, the odds of it going back into non-waking sleep (for me) was really high. After reading through this whole thread, and the different ways people are having to wake up their mbp's, it probably is another voodoo/snake oil cure that doesn't really solve the problem.
Does anybody have a link to the EFI 1.5.1 that supposedly fixes this problem, and that was mentioned a few days ago? I don't see it using Software update.

Isn't unplugging the laptop, removing the battery, then holding the power button for 5 seconds "resetting p ram"? That's what I've been doing, and I mentioned that in my second to last post. If resetting the p ram involves something else, could you please point me to the instructions? When I google resetting PRAM, I see the steps I mentioned above.

Updating to " Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07" the sleep problem went away. Also I can now use the MBP lid closed with my Dell screen.
The updating was not smooth: trying to do it using the "Apple" menu did not do the actual update even though "update complete" text appeared. When I disconnected the firewire/timemachine and downloaded the update from apple.com everything worked out fine.
I am keeping my fingers crossed but I have not had to reboot the MBP for the past two days.

This is my first post to this forum, but i have read every message in the thread. Thanks everyone for the ideas. I see that the last post was about 3 weeks ago. Does this mean that a definitive solution has been found? Please advise because I am ready to add this computer to my paperweight collection. Also, this is my second refurbished Apple product that does not work properly. The first was a defective eMac- which also had video problems. My MBP situation is similar to others, with its own voodoo. The screen remains black after opening the lid from sleep mode. I am able to get the screen back after playing around for a while. Mainly by 1) pressing power for several seconds- at which point the sleep indicator light goes off and i hear the HD winding down. 2) waiting 10 or so seconds, unplugging then replugging the power cord, and finally pressing power again. 3) At this point I may see the screen light up with a progress bar at the bottom, and a faint image of my session in the background as it is restored from what looks like safe sleep mode. 4) Sometimes it takes 3 or more tries to get it back this way. One very strange but important thing is that it rarely if ever works without the power cord voodoo maneuver. Another strange phenomenon is that when i power down and shut the lid, the sleep light comes on. This happens even if i wait a while after shut down.
For the record, here's some background on my ordeal: 1) The black screen phenomenon did not happen when i first got the machine about 15 months ago; 2) Now it happens - immediately- every time the lid is closed and reopened; 3) I have a) regularly installed updates, but never upgraded to 10.5.x, b) added a logitech wireless mouse and keyboard, and c) on one occasion used an HD TV as an external display; 3) I am running OS 10.4.11 so the problem is not due to OS 10.5 per se; 4) I recall having wake issues shortly after adding the wireless mouse and keyboard. 5) The problem occurs even when the mouse and keyboard are not attached. I rarely use them anyway. 6) I have yet to try any of the suggested fixes, yet. I will and see what happens.
Update on attempts to fix the black-screen upon waking from sleep mode problem: My screen still blacks out every time i close and open the lid. However, after recently resetting PRAM and PMU, getting out of black screen has become easier. It only takes one round of the following steps (instead of 3 rounds)
1) Open lid (sleep light stays on)
2) Press and hold power button for 3 sec or until sleep light goes out
3) Wait 5 seconds or until machine is totally silent
4) Press and hold power button for 1 sec (you will hear the superdrive mechanism engage)
5) Screen illuminates, progress bar appears and machine wakes from safe sleep
Here's what has NOT remedied the basic problem of getting a black screen upon waking from sleep 1) resetting PRAM 2) resetting PMU or SMC (system management controller) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 3) using terminal to change sleep mode setting from hibernatemode 3 to hibernatemode 0 or 1 4) discarding sleepimage file from mac HD\private\var\vm and rebooting 5) using terminal to disable dashboard 6) Ran an extended hardware test and no problems were found (meaning motherboard OK).

I haven't seemed to have the black screen issue in a week or so, but I now had the jerky keyboard and mouse problem. One time I wasn't even able to move the mouse or use the keyboard at all. It was totally dead. The only thing that worked was the power button, but since I couldn't select shutdown, I had to just hold it down to shut it off manually.
Has anybody had more luck bringing in their computers to the apple store to get fixed or get a new one? It really frustrates me that I essentially have to use my computer as a desktop by shutting it down between uses, or take a gamble over whether or not it will load again when I wake it from sleep.
I'm planning on giving them until 10.5.3 to fix it, and then calling in a favor with an Apple exec I'm friends with. Maybe he can get me a new one. It seems like a waste of a favor, but I don't think I can hold out until 10.5.4.
However, if anybody did find a magical fix for the problems we seem to all have been having, please let us know!
