I did a quick search that turned up nothing... Can you load up the old 1.1 firmware onto a brand new Apple TV for hackings sake?

I won't say its impossible, but probably pretty tough. What kind of 'hacking' are you trying to do? If you're looking to install OS X just get a used Mini, seriously, so much easier and functional.

I mainly wanted to be able to install Perian so it can play MKVs.

You can do that on Take Two.

Also ....

You can do a restore from the menu.

It will restore the Apple TV to the system in the Restore Partition.

Of course if it is brand new and was Take Two 'out of the box' chances are Apple has Take Two in that partition.

I got a brand new one little more than a week ago and it was defaulted at 1.1
