View Full Version : Difference between 2.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz in MacBook?

I've read different things, so I just wanna get it straight. Is the extra ".2 GHz" enough of a reason to pay $200 to swap out old model for new? I do a lot of graphic editing and music recording. Will there be a noticeable difference? Or at least enough of a difference to justify paying the $$$? I dont care about the HDD because that can easily be swapped anyway. I bought my laptop exactly one week ago, so I am still in the 14 day period. I wanna know what you guys think before I decide. Thanks! :D

When you start encoding you will notice a big decrease in heat dissipation since the new Penyrn is the 45nm instead of the 65nm.

How much of a difference in speed though? Also, will the new processor give it improved battery life?

Well if you're still within the 14 day window. Swap it out and pay the extra $200. I would
For a cooler CPU and a speed bump. Yes I would.

Even though you wont actually notice a difference in stuff time-wise it will be worth it.

As far as battery life etc. go look at the specs on Apple's site.

switch it out. especially if there is a newly opened apple store near you because the employees may forget to charge you a restocking fee. thats what happened to me when i switched from a 8gig iPhone to a 16gig during the 14 day return period.

plus the money spent is worth the upgrades.

Is it worth it if I only use my computer for web surfing, word, excel documents and the occasional dvd movie? I just got my 2.2 macbook last week.

i bought my 2.2ghz blackbook a month and a half ago, and i don't regret it one bit. i only use it for web surfing, word proc, online chat, and movies anyways. im sure most of you who bought a macbook use it for the same stuff as i do. the extra .2ghz won't make a difference for me.

Not much, really. The biggest upgrade in terms of bang-per-buck (or quid) is the "free" boost to 2GB of RAM and the 250GB hard drive. If you're going to upgrade to 4GB anyway, then that bump is moot.

Someone over on the MBP forum posted a Geekbench processor benchmark for the 2.4GHz Penryn MacBook Pro (same processor/FSB speed as the 2.4GHz MacBook). The score was 3083 I believe. My 2.2GHz MacBook scored 2880 (just ran it). Not a big difference there (158 points). To put that in perspective:

2.0GHz MacBook Core Duo = 2411
2.0GHz MacBook non-SR Core 2 Duo = 2534
2.0GHz MacBook SR Core 2 Duo = 2659
2.2GHz MacBook SR Core 2 Duo = 2880
2.4GHz MacBook Pro (Penryn) C2D = 3038

My machine is 16 days old, so I could also (at least try to) exchange it, but I'm not really going to bother. I've already upgraded it to 4GB of RAM, I still haven't filled the HD (I don't keep tons of movies/music/iPhotos on my laptop since I also have a desktop as a main machine), and I essentially only do text & minor graphics on my laptop (Mail, word processing, Keynote/PowerPoint, web, OmniGraffle, Preview for PDFs and minor jpeg editing with Pixelmator or Preview).
