force firewire drive to mount?

Back in the day, we had SCSIProbe. it was a free utility from (I think) Sytmantec, and you could launch it to just scan the SCSI chain for devices, and force them to mount.

I'm in a situation where I need to keep turning off a hard drive because I don't want to listen to the fan, but sometimes when I power it back up, it doesn't mount in the Finder, even though Apple System Profiler, and Disk Utility can see the drive and report no errors.

So, is there a modern-day equivalent of SCSIProbe that can just let me force-mount the disk manually?

i'm in the same situation with my IBM 120GB ATA hard drive, the damn thing will not mount for anything, but disk utility and drive 10 see the drive
