Okay here is the deal,

I can view my Mac share just fine on the Vista machine, but the vista share does not show up on my mac machine in Finder.

What's up?

I can access the Vista share by typing: smb://192.168.1.106. Things work fine that way... But I want it to show up automatically.

Both my mac are in the same workgroup if that makes a difference.

....

Kinda puzzeling since XP shares showed up fine in 10.5, and I had a hard time getting Mac shares to show up in XP.

I've got the same problem. Here's my answer: Vista sucks

Man I don't know,

Vista is having no problem finding my Mac,
However my Mac is having a hard time finding Vista.

From that information alone, I would say Vista sucks... Sorry 🙁

Anyway, I am running Vista Ultimate on my PC if that makes a difference.

I have the same issue with that sometimes getting other windows xp machines shareing folders to a visa box. On leopard there is the issue of the windows shares not consistently staying up on finder, they eventually dissapear after appearing.

Called Applecare,

My issue went all the way up to an "Apple Engineer."

They told me 10.5 does not actively search for SMB shares.

I say "That is impossible because XP is automatically listed in the Finder sidebar anytime a computer is available."

I get an 'over the phone shrug' and that was the end of the call.

Can some network genius out there help me?!?

Windows machines typically "broadcast" their available shares across the network. Any computer listening (i.e. your Mac) can take note.

My guess is what ChiaJesus is homing in on. If your XP machine has no firewall turned on, then nothing is blocking its announcments of it shares, and your Mac would see them. On your Vista machine, the firewall WOULD block the announcement, and your Mac wouldn't see them.

Vista machines have the same problem connecting to other vista or xp machines fairly frequently. If you havent already you need to turn UAC off on the vista machine, then go into network and security center and turn everything to share. Usually that works but sometimes it doesnt.

Connect to Server seems to tickle it

When this happens to me (i.e. my mac does not show a "Shared" section in the sidebar, I do Go->Connect_to_server and then type in smb://server/sharename

I enter my windows login and password, it connects to the share and then a Shared section shows up in the sidebar with the name of the windows machine. If I click on the windows machine name, all the shares offered by that host are shown.

Change your WORKGROUP in System Preferences > Network > Advanced... > WINS to something/anything else.

Then go back and change it to whatever your Vista Workgroup is.
